‘Go on, man, tell me the
rest. Did Captain Carstairs find out how Sinclair thought he could murder us
and still claim the title?’

‘It would seem, your
grace, he believed creating an atmosphere of fear around this place meant
nobody would come to investigate your disappearance, or that of Miss Frobisher.
Then after a time he was going to reappear and claim the title and your
fortunes.’

Ralph shook his head.
‘The plans of a madman! He couldn’t claim the title without producing my body
and by doing so would incriminate himself. His scheme was ingenious but fatally
flawed.’ He nodded, dismissing the soldier. ‘Thank you for your assistance. I
shall detain you no longer.’ He strode back to the drawing room but his quarry
had gone. He met Polly who smiled and pointed upstairs. Even better – it would
be easier to convince his darling girl they were as good as married if she was
already in her bedchamber.
