Go to Brussels as bait; they hoped the man who'd written the love letter would try to contact her. And that having read it, she'd encourage him. Very open and sincere.

‘Why not? Why don't you want to go?' Dick asked again.

She looked at him and managed to smile. ‘Because there's nothing there for me any more. I'm not sure what to put in its place, but I don't like the way my life is going. I've got a second chance … Not everyone is that lucky.

‘I'm resigning from the Foreign Office. I told him this afternoon. He wasn't very pleased.'

Dick Lucas poured more coffee. She was changed by whatever had happened in those few weeks. She'd been through the fire and it showed.

He looked at her and after a moment he said, ‘I'm in love with you, Rosa. Sometime when you're ready I want you to marry me. But I've got to ask you something. Was Harry the guy they're looking for? Harry Oakham?'

‘Yes,' she answered. ‘Yes, Dick, it was. But it's all over. That's all I can say. I'm sorry.'

‘That's OK. If you're sure it's over.'

The parcel had arrived that morning. He was upstairs in her bedroom, his felt hat crushed down over the little straw face with its silly painted smile.

She hadn't looked for a postmark. She'd burnt the brown wrapping before Parker arrived.

He and Jan had got away.

‘It's over,' she said. ‘I promise you.'

‘That's good enough,' Lucas answered. ‘I think you'll like living in the States.'
