“Interesting reading?” she smirked. He didn’t smile. He looked at her with an expression completely devoid of humor

“I’ll be blunt, nurse. This is worse than I expected.”

Tessa’s heart sank. This was the part where he informed her that he’d changed his mind about offering her even a provisional position.

“Okay,” she said, “well, thanks for letting me know.” She turned back to the door, hiding the little tears of disappointment in her eyes.

“Tessa,” he said somewhat sharply. “Come back here. We’re not done talking.”

“Yes, we are,” she said, her hand on the doorknob.

She heard his chair scrape back on the linoleum floor, heard one footstep, and then felt his hand on her upper arm. He turned her around to face him, which she did reluctantly. “Where are you going?”

“None of your business,” she snapped. “You’re done with me, right? I don’t have time for a lecture, Kirk. I don’t have time for any of this. Just take on one of the good little nurses and have a nice life.”

“You’re really presumptuous,” he said as she tried to tug her arm free. “We haven’t even started talking yet. Why don’t you wait to hear what I have to say instead of assuming you know?”

“Because I know what you’re going to say. I’ve heard it a hundred times from a hundred people,” Tessa shot back. “I don’t need to hear it again.”

“I think there’s something you haven’t heard,” Kirk said solemnly. “As a matter of fact, I think there’s a whole lot you haven’t heard from anyone.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re a talented, passionate woman who could rise to the top of her field if she just had a little of the right kind of guidance…”

“Yeah, right,” Tessa snorted. “You know all that after, what, fifteen minutes with me?”

“I knew all that after two minutes with you,” he replied swiftly. “If you’d just stop fighting me, you’d realize I’m trying to help you.”

“So you want me on your team?”

“I do, with conditions.”

“What? A probationary period? Or some kind of clause so if you fire me I don’t have any recourse? Or you only want me on an emergency basis? Or pending more training? Or you want me to take a sensitivity course?”

“Tessa,” he said when she had briefly paused in her recitation of possible conditions. “You really, really need to work on your listening skills. I expect my nurses to listen to me and respond appropriately. You seem very wound up over something. Is something wrong?”

Something was wrong. She was inches from a man who made the very core of her throb with need and she was so close to a long awaited promotion she could almost taste it—and she was equally sure she was about to stuff it all up. Or already had. Or… she didn’t know. Her head was spinning and her knees felt weak and she was quivering from head to toe.

He lowered his head toward hers, searching her eyes and slowly the distance between them narrowed. It grew smaller and smaller until his lips met hers in a passionate, crushing kiss, surprising the air out of her. She arched instinctively toward him, her hips finding his body unerringly. As his tongue snaked into her mouth, he slid his hand around her waist and laid a hard slap to her bottom.

Tessa squealed against his lips. “What was that? What is this?”

“Stop with the questions and the talking,” he said in a growl that vibrated through her body as he slapped her bottom yet again, demanding her attention. “I want you to pay attention to me, Tessa. To what I say and to what I do.”

His hand cupped her bottom as his lips descended on hers yet again, his tongue demanding entrance to her mouth. Her lips parted and she found herself engulfed by his passion. His hand landed against her bottom many more times, striking her hard and fast with punitive slaps that made her squeal into his mouth.

Tessa could not believe what was happening. Doctors and nurses kissed all the time—most of the hospital was sleeping with the rest of the hospital at any given time—but she’d never been the sort of girl to do that sort of thing. Now though, with Kirk’s tongue lashing hers, his palm landing against her scrub-clad rear over and over again with a crisp, hard whacking sound that echoed around the room, she didn’t know what kind of girl she was.

Tessa began to whimper against his lips, shocked into momentary submission as he spanked her standing up, his palm catching her cheeks so hard she found her hips jolting forward against his hard frame, her clit tingling with each and every swat. He must have slapped her bottom two dozen times before he let up and showed some mercy.

When he lifted his mouth from hers, she looked up into his face, her mouth open in a question as yet unspoken.

“Because you deserve it,” he answered her look in gravelly tones. “And because you need it.”

His hand was still on her bottom, holding her against his body. Tessa was too shocked to pull away, and enjoying the feel of his handsome muscular frame against her smaller form too much to want to.

His thumb drifted over the rise of her cheeks and hooked in the back of her scrubs. Tessa felt the elastic easily give way to his will, her scrubs sliding over the curve of her rear and down her thighs, revealing a bottom clad in white panties. She made a half-hearted attempt to snatch them back up again, but by the time she grabbed the waistband, her panties were already joining them. In a matter of seconds, she was naked from the waist down, her panties and scrubs bunched about her knees.

Kirk sat down in his armless swivel chair and beckoned her over. The moment he was more than arm’s length away from her, Tessa covered her privates with her hands, blushing profusely.

“Come here, Tessa.”

She found her feet moving in response to his summons, but with her scrubs in place around her knees and her hands clasped over her mound, she was reduced to a slow shuffle, which gave her enough time to realize what she was doing and stop.

“Doctor…”

“Come here, Tessa,” he repeated, his smooth baritone cutting through her doubt. “This is what you need, what I’d be willing to bet nobody has ever done before. Taken you in hand and given you a real reason to behave yourself.”

“B-but…”

He rolled his chair forward, took hold of her hand, and tipped her over his lap without another word. Tessa found the world spinning until finally she was face down toward the linoleum, her body pressed against his thighs, her bare bottom raised to his palm. Kirk began spanking her immediately, hard swats that landed first on one cheek, then the other.

She let out a yowl of surprise at the intensity of the sting. He was not playing any kind of game with her. This was a real spanking. She cried out as the hard plane of his hand landed against her cheeks with hard, fast swats, her bare thighs kicking in protest at the heat searing through her flesh.

“Why are you doing this?” She gasped the question desperately.

“Because you need it,” he said simply, almost clinically. His palm was still performing its swift tattoo, keeping the heat high.

“You’re crazy! You’re out of your mind!” She threw the accusations over her shoulder, hoping they would make him stop. He didn’t stop. He kept spanking her bottom hard and fast, making her toes drum against the linoleum of his office, her face flush red with embarrassment and every nerve in her body tingling.

“You’re going to take a place on my team,” he informed her just as tears began pricking at her eyelids. “And you’re going to learn how to behave yourself. Every time you misbehave, you can expect to be disciplined, understand, Tessa?”

“Understand? I could have you fired for this.”

“No, you couldn’t,” he replied. “The hospital has been requesting me for the better part of the last decade. I doubt they will let a complaint from an unruly nurse with a history of disciplinary action get in the way.”

“If you do this to me… you’ll do it to others,” Tessa sniffed. “And one of them will report you too, and then…”

“Nice try,” he said, swatting low on her left cheek. “I don’t have any intention of doing this to any others, because there are no others I want on my team who need this. Consider yourself my pet project, or simply, my pet.”

His fingers spread across her cheeks as he palmed her bottom possessively. “You’ve caught my eye, Tessa. I want you on my team, and I’ll do what is necessary to make that happen, understand?”

She understood that her backside was aching and stinging and also that there was a trickling wetness between her lower lips that she very much wanted to keep a secret. For some reason she could not understand, it wasn’t just her bottom that was flushed with heat. Her pussy was tingling, her nipples were erect, her face was blushing. Her entire body was responding to the spanking—to him.

“Do you understand, my pet?”

Those words, intoned in his deep voice, made her very soul quiver. There was deeply serious intent there, an ownership that made her panic. All of a sudden, she couldn’t bear what her answer had to be. She bucked hard, surprising him enough to tumble off his lap. Before he could say anything else, Tessa hauled her pants and panties up and ran from the room, her heart pounding, blood rushing in her ears, tears tracing down her bright red face.

The moment she stepped into the hall she knew she’d made a mistake. Whatever had happened between them was not something that happened every day. It wasn’t even something that happened every lifetime—but it was too much and she couldn’t begin to bear to take it.

Chapter Three

In the aftermath of one of the most unorthodox job interviews he’d ever conducted, Kirk was puzzled. He had not expected the girl to run. Tessa had struck him as strongly rebellious and in dire need of a firm hand—the sort to stand her ground and fight, not to flee. He left his office in her wake, discovering that she was already gone. She must have literally ran away. Interesting.

Worried about her, and concerned he’d made a significant misjudgment, he went down to the staff room for a coffee to clear his head. There he found that Susan Street, the director of nursing was present, a jaunty woman in her early sixties with a kindly maternal air. She spotted his discouragement at a distance. “Hard first day?”

“I’m wondering if I made a mistake selecting my team,” Kirk admitted. “One of the nurses seems incredibly bright and able, but I can’t quite understand where she’s coming from.”

“Who is it? Maybe I can help,” Susan said, stirring her coffee.

“Tessa Watkins.”

“Tessa? She’s an excellent nurse. Incredibly hard worker too. Works two jobs.”

“Two jobs?”

“She does a shift here most days, then does nights at the rest home across the street,” Susan said. “I don’t know when she finds time to sleep.”

“After her morning shift in the afternoons, I imagine,” Kirk murmured. He was beginning to feel like a complete and utter ass. He’d not even considered that there might be a reason she couldn’t see him later. He’d assumed her insistence on a three o’clock meeting was just more defiance.

“I suppose so,” Susan nodded. “But she’s always on time and her work is excellent. Sure, she’s written up now and then, but never for anything related to patient care. Usually because she’s bruised some doctor’s ego.”

“That I can easily imagine,” Kirk said with a smile.

“I’d advise you to snap her up while you can,” Susan said. “Before someone else does—or before she gets herself fired.”

Chapter Four

Hours later, Tessa was trying to blink back her tears as she remade Mr. Turlet’s bed. Dammit. She’d been so close to getting to that next level. Now there was no chance. Kirk would almost certainly pick someone else for his team after that thoroughly embarrassing debacle.

Her butt stung under her starched uniform, reminding her of every hot slap the doctor had landed on her bottom. The gusset of her underwear was also sporting an incessant reminder, sliding against her mound with warm wetness. She was still aroused. Hours had passed and yet somehow she could not forget the way his body had felt against hers, or how he had tasted when he kissed her.

“It was inappropriate,” she told herself. “You should file a complaint.”

She snorted to herself, knowing there was no way she was going to do that. The idea of filling out a form in which she detailed how the doctor had spanked her was almost more mortifying than the fact that she’d been spanked in the first place.

Tessa went on with her work and pulled a starched pillowcase over the latex pillow, then settled it on the bed while Mr. Turlet looked on with the faint interest of an elderly man.

“There you go,” Tessa said. “Now you settle in up here and have a good night’s sleep.”

She helped her patient into bed, wished him a good night again, and turned out the light. When she stepped out into the hall, she was greeted by a fellow night nurse. Tessa wasn’t sure what the woman’s name was; she was the latest in a long line of temp staff to bounce in and out of the care home.

“Tessa, there’s someone here to see you. A doctor.” The nurse said the word ‘doctor’ in approving tones, as if she were being visited by the second coming.

“Is there a problem with one of the patients? Have we had an emergency?”

“I don’t think so,” the nurse said. “He’s waiting in the waiting room.”

Tessa proceeded to the room of waiting, but stopped dead as soon as she saw who was sitting on one of the leatherette chairs. Him. Tall, dark, and so handsome her knees were weaker just for having looked at him.

“Tessa.” Kirk said her name kindly. “May we speak, please?”

“What are you doing here?”

“Well, I’d like to explain that,” he said. “Come on in. Shut the door behind you.”

He was managing to take charge even though he had absolutely no authority in the rest home. Tessa outranked him there, but she still found herself closing the door as he had asked and waiting to hear what he had to say.

“First of all, I’m sorry for upsetting you earlier,” Kirk said. “I handled that badly. Or rather, I handled you badly. You’re more slippery and quicker than I thought.” He flashed a wink at her, which made her blush as her heart performed a fluttering dance in her chest.
