This is a book I wish I didn’t feel compelled to write. Facing the reality of food addiction is tough. But seeing how many suffer needlessly from the prison of food addiction, and witnessing how many of my patients were able to quickly overcome it by applying simple scientific principles that most don’t know, I knew I had to write this book.
I am grateful to all the scientists who work tirelessly to dissect the biology of how food affects us, particularly two friends, David Ludwig, MD, of Harvard, and Kelly Brownell, PhD, of Yale. They are dedicated scientists who have broken tough ground to call attention to this issue and to prove the science behind it. Read their work; it is revolutionary.
I thank my patients who trusted me to translate that science into practical strategies for their healing. They have shown me through their struggles and success exactly how real this problem is, and how easily it can be solved with the right approach.
Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for my agent, Richard Pine, who has guided me and gently pushed me to speak what is true. A big thank-you to Tracy Behar, my editor, and all my friends and supporters at Little, Brown, who saw the possibility of a new solution to our health care crisis and created a fabulous home for the ideas of functional medicine. And to Debra Goldstein, who helped me shape, massage, and craft this manuscript with love and passion, thank you. The jukebox is always on!
A special thanks to my UltraTeam: Anne McLaughlin, Kate
Johnson, Gerry Doherty, Shibani Subramanya, Daffnee Cohen, Robert Oakes, and Lizzy Swick, who make it possible for me to do the work I love every day.
My thanks extend to many more who have inspired, helped, and supported me. The list would be too long if I named everyone individually, but you know who you are—thank you, thank you, thank you. I must mention a few special people: Jeffrey Bland, who cracked open my world twelve years ago (and it has never been the same); my friends and cofaculty and board members at the Institute for Functional Medicine, Laurie Hoffman, David Jones, Patrick Hanaway, Kristi Hughes, Dan Lukazker, and the many others who make it happen.
To my cocreators and fellow medical and wellness activists who have inspired me and continue to create seismic shifts in our way of thinking and living, thank you: Dean Ornish, Mehmet C. Oz, James Gordon, Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra, Christiane Northrup, Daniel and Tara Goleman, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Leo Galland, Sidney Baker, David Perlmutter, Frank Lipman, Patrick Hanaway, Robert Hedaya, Joel Evans, David Eisenberg, Bethany Hayes, David Jones, Tracy Gaudet, Kenneth Pelletier, Peter Libby, and Martha Herbert. A special thanks to Arianna Huffington for providing a place for the truth to be told. Thank you, Rick Warren, Dee Eastman, and all my friends at Saddleback for believing that we can all get healthy together.
Without the support of my team at the UltraWellness Center, where I do my primary work of seeing patients, I couldn’t begin to do anything else. You are my foundation and at the core of my life. Your contributions wash over me daily. Thank you for showing up and believing.
My friends and partners at the Handel Group—Lauren Zander, Joe Seibert, Erik Van Dillen, Katie Torpey, Amy Teuteberg, Andy Youmans, and others—help me dream the dream and make transformation happen. I thank you beyond measure!!
Most importantly, my family has supported me in my crazy passion for changing the way we practice medicine and creating a healthier world for all of us. I could not have done this without all your love and
belief in what I am doing. Thank you, Rachel, Misha, Ruth, Saul, Jesse, Ben, Sarah, Paul, Lauren, Jake, and Zachary. It is for you and because of you that I wake up every day grateful and joyful.
And to Pilar Gerasimo, my co–health revolutionary and partner, who chewed over every word and made this book speak loudly for all. Thank you for your genius and your love!
Lastly, a profound thank-you goes out to all those who participated in the trial run of the Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet and showed just how powerful food can be to heal and renew.
