Sincerely,
Sebastian Cartwright
I sit there staring at the screen, my heart beating wildly.
I have all the ordinary reactions: horror at finding out someone who treated me well, who helped save my life, is being framed for murder. Sympathy for his plight. Fear for his and Lily’s safety.
But there other emotions, too, ones I didn’t expect:
Excitement.
Anticipation.
Hunger.
Now I know why I couldn’t stop Grant from doing what he loves.
Because he was right about me: I’m just like him.
Now that I’ve gotten another taste of the thing I love to do, the thing that makes
me
feel alive, I don’t want to give it up, either.
I check the news sites. It’s late night in the U.S., and Connor’s arrest won’t have made the papers yet, but it might be in the online versions.
Sure enough, there’s Connor in a suit and handcuffs, being forced into the back of a cop car. The picture is splashed at the top of every website, with lurid headlines like ‘Billionaire Kills Father’ and ‘Patricide On Park Avenue.’
I go back and re-read the email.
I sit there staring at the screen, knowing what I want to do but unsure of what I
should
do, until Grant comes back from his swim.
“Man, it’s cold out there,” he laughs as he towels his hair. “You should come out with me and – ”
Then he sees my face.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, immediately all business.
I show him the email, then the headlines.
“Jesus Christ,” he whispers.
I look at him pleadingly. “What do you want me to do?”
He frowns, confused. “Whatever you can. We owe him our lives.”
“What if… what if they want more assistance than I can legally provide?”
Grant grins. “Look at you. Not even 24 hours, and already going back on your wedding vows.”
“This is serious!” I cry out miserably. “I promised you I wouldn’t hack anymore.”
“Do you not want to do this?”
I take a long time to answer.
“I don’t
not
want to do it,” I mutter miserably.
Grant smiles and kneels down beside me.
“I was never the one who told you to stop, Eve. You made up that rule yourself.” He leans over and kisses me, then looks me in the eyes. “You freed me last night to be who I really am. I want you to free yourself, too. Do what you love, and be who you really are. That’s the woman I want – in all of her messy, fucked-up glory.”
I break down and cry. “Really?”
“Really.”
“But the NSA…”
“Can they really catch you?”
To any ordinary person, it would sound like a perfectly sane question.
But to me, it sounds like a challenge.
“…no. I don’t think so.”
“Then do it. Help Connor and Lily.”
“But it’s against the law.”
He shrugs. “I’ve been known to break a law or two in my time.”
We both laugh and kiss passionately. And with that, I turn from the man I love most in the world, to the thing I love and gave up for him… and which he let me take back for myself.
