“Was that Max Stone who came in to see you yesterday?!”
“Nope.” Therese shook her head. “Just a look-alike.”
Natasha’s face dropped with disappointment. “Really?” When Therese nodded again the young girl went back to sit down behind the register. “I was so sure it was him,” she said.
“Sorry.” Therese went directly toward the back of the store for her office.
Once settled in, she put on Max’s music. As she worked, she slipped into the perfect zone of reminiscing tempered with paying strict attention to what she was doing on the computer screen. The morning flew by quickly.
In the afternoon, Therese was typing in some numbers on a new spreadsheet when Natasha called her cell.
“There’s someone here to see you,” she said. Her tone was cool.
Not Nikki then. Or even Max.
Therese saved her file and slipped from behind the desk, as she left the office to walk to the front of the store, she heard furious boot heels pounding toward her on the store’s tile floors. Surprised, she looked up. Only to see a familiar woman, skinny with wild hair, big breasts bouncing in a low-cut shirt that cost twice as much as Therese’s car. The woman calling herself Max’s girlfriend.
“There’s the bitch right there!” The woman stalked down the narrow aisle toward Therese, not slowing down even as she passed customers, some with small children, who stared at her open-mouthed. “Listen, you fat bitch! I already warned you one time about staying away from Max.” The woman stopped when she was within three feet of Therese, grabbed something, a clear bottle with something yellow in it, from the big purse over her shoulder. “Consider this warning number two.”
She threw the bottle’s contents in Therese’s face.
