Epilogue
I had once thought that the most beautiful sound in the world was the sound of Marco telling me that he loved me. I was wrong. The most beautiful sound was actually the sound of a baby’s cry.
Tears rolled down my face as I stared down at my little niece who had made her way into the world with a rambunctious cry. Her mother had given birth naturally under the support of me, Andre and Sophia.
“She’s beautiful,” I said as I laid the bundled little girl in Aurora’s arms.
Tears were flowing freely down Aurora’s face as she looked down at her little girl for the first time. Andre looked down proudly at his daughter who had just begun the next generation of our family.
A knock at the door caused me to turn to find Marco, holding the flowers I had asked him to bring. He handed them to Aurora before kissing her on the forehead and then, shook his brother’s hand as he looked down into Ruby’s little face. He reached down and touched her silky soft cheek with the tips of his fingers.
“Hello, Little Ruby,” he whispered, “Welcome to our family.”
My heart melted as he continued to coo at her. Finally, he stood next to me, pulling me into his arms.
“So, are you happy, Grandma?” Marco asked, still grinning widely.
“Of course, I am,” she said, and then, frowned at both of us, “I’ll be happier to be the grandmother of two.”
Marco laughed, “You heard her, Andre,” he said, laughing, “You and Aurora should get back to work as soon as possible.”
“No,” Aurora said with wide eyes, “She definitely meant you two. I’m not going through that again anytime soon.”
I laughed as I went to my sister and kissed her forehead. She gave me a secretive grin, “It is wonderful to be a mother though.”
I smiled at her and then, at Ruby. Yes, I could see that it was.
“I think it’s time to go home,” I said, yawning, “Before Sophia starts making plans for the next baby shower.”
Aurora raised her brow, “Then, you better run.”
I hugged everyone and then, took Marco’s hand, leaving Sophia’s house. We walked in silence for a few minutes before he looked at me.
“You know, I wouldn’t mind having a couple of kids,” he said, laughing, “Though I think they should look like you.”
“No, one of them should definitely look like you,” I said, grinning as he took me into his arms.
“So, do you want to try?” He asked, looking suddenly serious.
I laughed as I pulled him closer to me, “That would make me the happiest girl in the world.”
**********
Eli watched as Lilly embraced Marco. The anger he felt as he watched them bubbled up in his chest. They shouldn’t have taken her from him.
He
shouldn’t have taken her from him. She was his.
His eyes narrowed as he stood between the motor homes, plotting his revenge. A picture rested in his hands of a blonde headed teenage girl. Her smile was beautiful and wide and her eyes were blue.
He raised his chin as his fingertips traced the picture. He smiled as he looked back at the girl he had lost. Then, he looked down at the picture of the girl he would take away from them as he whispered her name, “Mary Jane.”
