fault. I knew it was, but I forgave him. How stupid of me. If he hadn't come to the library that day… If I hadn't stayed behind …

heavy. Just when I was thinking everything might be okay. Just when I had let him in.

The cabbie stopped in front of me. I pulled the door open and got inside.

I stumbled backwards but familiar arms caught me. I didn't need to look to know who it was. I pushed away from him. The taxi drove away.

"I knew it !" I screamed. I pointed at Matt and tears started to stream down my face.

He seemed confused. "Knew it? Knew

"About your fiancée!"

"What are you talking about?" he asked.

"Don't fuck around with me!" I yelled. "They told me everything. About how you're engaged to be married. Her name's Sofia isn't it? Or do you have more than one?"

Matt tried to come near me, but I backed away.

"Don't. Touch. Me."

"Penny."

"I don't want to hear it –"

There was a rush of air and then all of a sudden I couldn't move. Matt held me tight so that I couldn't struggle. He had wrapped his coat around me and the warmth from his body was thawing my skin.

"Let go..." I said weakly.

He only held me tighter. Matt tilted my chin up with one hand and gave me a burning kiss on the lips. I stopped struggling.

"Don't listen to her," Matt said.

"Who?"

"My mom. Don't listen to her. She doesn't know what she's talking about."

"But they had pictures –"

"She wants me to marry Sofia. Her family has money. I took her on a single date for my mom's sake, and now she goes around, saying that we are engaged."

I heard anger seep into his voice. He looked down at me.

"I'm not five years old, Penny," he said. "I don't have to do what my mother says. I have my own money. I can make my own choices.
And I chose you
."

He released me a little bit and wiped away my tears with his hands.

"I'll be honest, this is the first time I've ever dated a black girl, so all of this is news to me too. But the first time I saw you, I couldn't tear my eyes away. I knew at that moment that I wanted you. I just had to have you.

But I didn't say it would be easy. Actually, it'll probably be hard. My family has problems, as you can see.

But I'll try my best never to be the person who makes you cry like this. Do you trust me enough to believe that?"

I hesitated. Those were a lot of nice words, but were they real? I thought I had trusted him before. But now, even after his explanation, I wasn't sure.

"I…"

I stepped backwards. Matt grabbed my arms, squeezing tight.

"What can I do to prove it to you?" he asked.

I shook my head slowly. "I don't know."

I really didn't, but I wished I did. Matt looked away for a moment, as if he was deciding whether or not to do something. What was he thinking?

"If anyone ever, ever talks to you like that. Let me know. I'll take care of them. I don't care who it is," Matt said.

Then he paused again. He took a deep breath and looked into my eyes.

"Penelope, I didn't want to say this so soon. I didn't want to scare you. But I think if I don't tell you now, I'll never get to," he said. "I
love
you."

His words pierced straight through my heart. It was racing so fast that I was sure it would burst any second now. It didn't seem real. Maybe I was dreaming.

"I have a surprise for you. I've been thinking about it ever since that night in the library," he said.

Matt reached into his pocket. I found myself hoping that he wouldn't pull out a jewelry box. I wouldn't be able to keep from fainting if he did.

"I hope you don't mind," he said.
