I gave him a friendly smile, and he took a half-step back.
“Now,” I said, shutting the shotgun with a loud
clack
. “I think you owe the nice lady an apology.”
He glanced in May’s direction but seemed reluctant to take his eyes off me. “Ya’re… ya’re…”
“The town doctor, yes,” I said amiably. “Now, apologize to her for scaring the daylights out of her, or you and I are going to have some problems, understood?”
He stuttered an apology to May and ran out so fast you would have thought the seat of his pants had caught fire.
I handed the shotgun to May, who nodded and placed it behind the counter.
“Thanks for that, Doc,” she said.
“Not a problem,” I said, and then glanced after the man’s fleeing form. “Remind me to ask you sometime what sort of rumors have been flying about me.”
She laughed. “Maybe when ya got a couple hours to kill.”
Being a legend did seem to have its merits.
