“It’s a rare day I don’t have a conversation with someone about communicating with God,” says Laura Harris Smith, Chosen author and founding co-pastor of Eastgate Creative Christian Fellowship with husband, Chris. “My life and career as a communicator have taken many twists and turns, but no matter what arena I’ve found myself in—secular or spiritual—there has never been anyone who could resist such a conversation because everyone wants to know and be known.”
Laura’s television career began at the age of 3 in commercials, and by the age of 21 she found herself at Hollywood International Studios, facing a life-defining crossroad. Realizing a call on her life to train as well as entertain, Laura returned home to Nashville, Tennessee, and launched a Christian dinner theatre, which gave birth to her professional writing career. Plays led to books and books led to speaking and speaking led to an ordination in 2001, which amazingly not only opened more doors ministerially, but also brought her full circle, back into secular television by God’s design. By 2006, she had become a television host on the Shop At Home TV Network. Eastgate, where her husband, Chris, is senior pastor, was being birthed simultaneously and is home to creative artisans of every kind,
including those in the administrative arts (those left-brainers whose “administry” creatively keeps the innovations resourced and organized).
Having always had one foot in ministry and one in media, Laura is a published poet and the author of multiple books. She speaks and ministers across denominational lines and is known for bringing a lighthearted look at the heaviest of biblical topics. Married for thirty years, Chris and Laura have six children: Jessica, Julian, Jhason, Jeorgi, Jude and Jenesis, all homeschooled and all creative artisans. With half of their children now grown and married, Laura and Chris also have a growing list of grandchildren who now outnumber the kids.
