Because she was Fireborne.

And the dragon shifter on the slab was her mate.

She slipped the burning hot necklace over her head and turned to see Kai shifting before her very eyes.

KAI

It was the most beautiful sound he’d ever heard in his life.

He turned his head to see her walking toward the flame, her face rapt, angelic. He felt the heat of the blade radiating, poised over his chest, as he saw her put on the necklace. It glowed red hot between her breasts as she turned to him, singing words his soul knew by heart.

“What is Mated cannot be broken, what is Holy cannot be profaned,

Mistress and Master, Loved and Beloved, what is One shall never be parted.”

And then he was becoming. The necromancer cried out in surprise as Kai began to shift. There was no warning—the lich wasn’t expecting it, not yet—not until the very last line of the song had been sung.

“You will heed me!” The lich screeched, holding up his hands in warning.

And for a moment, Kai felt his wings falter. He hadn’t been a dragon in a very long time. It felt both familiar and foreign to him all at once. Did the man still have power over him?

“No, he goddamned won’t!” Jules screamed before grabbing the knife Kai had thrown near the fire and plunging it into the man’s back.

The old man stumbled and then went to his knees, trying desperately to reach the handle of the knife buried in his back.

Kai lowered his snout all the way to the ground, spreading his wings wide in acquiescence.

Jules came toward him slowly, as if in a dream. She looked at him in wonder, stroking his cheek, petting the scales on the side of his neck.

“I’m your Fireborne,” she whispered, tears in her eyes. “I’m your mate, Kai. And you’re mine.”

He gave a small nod as she pressed her head to his. She softly sang the last line.

Dragon and Rider shall be One Flame…”

Kai gave a roar as Jules swung a leg over and climbed on, clinging tightly.

They were dragon and rider once again, at last.

JULES

She remembered who she was.

The moment she began to sing, it came flooding in like a dam, breaking her heart wide open.

She was still Jules—but she was more than Jules. She was Fireborne. She was a dragon rider, and this was her dragon.

Kai soared above the trees, giving a triumphant roar, and she couldn’t help but laugh with joy, clinging to him as she looked down below at the cemetery. In the moonlight, she could see the wolves fighting with the army of revenants the necromancer had raised. Skeletons seemed to dance over the graves and between headstones.

Her dragon circled back and she stroked his neck, singing the song again as they flew. Kai dove down toward the clearing, and she could see the necromancer standing before the fire, arms upstretched, his lips moving. Still casting spells, even now.

One moment he was there, and the next, he was being consumed in green dragon fire.

Kai flapped his wings and flew higher until she was breathless, laughing with delight as he made circles around and around above the graveyard. Everywhere she looked, the dead were falling down again. Skeletons collapsed into heaps of bones. The wolves below howled at the moon and the dragon circling over their head.

Jules lowered her head to rub her cheek against the scales of his long neck, squeezing him hard between her thighs and digging into his sides with her riding boots.

“What is Mated cannot be broken, what is Holy cannot be profaned,

Mistress and Master, Loved and Beloved, what is One shall never be parted.”

Kai roared and blew green flame. Below them, she heard cheers.

She sang the last line again, savoring it:

Dragon and Rider shall be One Flame…”

“I love you!” she shouted to the sky as Kai flapped his wings.

And then a sudden pain bloomed in her side.

Jules cried out, trying to hold onto him.

She felt Kai tense, saw him look back, but it was too late.

She was falling.

KAI

He wasn’t fast enough to catch her.

By the time he reached the ground, she was surrounded by shifters, no longer wolves.

“Don’t touch her!” Kai ran toward the crowd, no longer a dragon. “No one move her!”

“Ye do’na wanna see,” Graham told him, trying to keep him back, but Kai pushed past him too.

She was on her side, curled like a bairn, an arrow sticking out of her side.

“Who did this?” Kai roared.

“I killed ’em for ye.” Graham pointed at a body that no longer had a head. There was a crossbow lying beside it. “Musta been one of the lich’s men.”

He bent over her, his heart breaking, and lifted her carefully in his arms. Blood seeped out where the arrow had entered her side. The circle of magic the lich had cast was broken, but the fire still burned. Kai wept as he put her down on the altar, glancing up to see the shifters standing in a circle around him.

“She saved you.” Barb put a small, gentle hand on his shoulder. “She brought you back, Kai. She brought all the dragon shifters back.”

“What?” He looked back at her, confused.

“Aye.” The wulver nodded, looking down at Jules’ broken body. His face was grim. “Tis true. Ye broke t’spell. Ye released all of t’dragon shifters.”

“We’re getting texts from all over,” Tristan said, holding up his cell phone. “Every dragon shifter still alive is able to shift again.”

“Oh Jules.” He lowered his head to her breast, his tears falling on her as he lifted the red jewel over her heart. “Oh my love, my mate… I wish you could have lived to know it…”

“Know what?”

The whole crowd gave a collective gasp as Jules lifted her head to look at him.

“My side is killing me. And my head.” She groaned, lifting a hand to rub it. “I was dreaming you were a dragon and we were flying…”

“It wasn’t a dream.” Kai crushed her to him, ignoring her yelp of pain.

“They said the Fireborne were immortal once.” Graham’s voice was full of awe.

“They are again,” Kai whispered into his mate’s ear. “You know what that means?”

“I’m stuck with you for all eternity?” She smirked, in spite of the obvious pain she was in—but she was immortal now and would heal in no time.

Kai snorted a laugh, holding her even tighter, if that was possible.

“Exactly.”
