“Dude, we have to go.  We can't kill a cop.”  His partner shook his head.  “I'm not leaving without her head.”  David's brows drew down, but even though he didn't take his eyes off his target he was surprised as he moved with such speed that he had his wrist captured and was shoving him back before he could fire.  The man was strong, strong enough that Harding was suspecting that he might be high on PCP or something.  His fist crashed into Harding's face and he saw stars, struggling to free his arm and punching him was like hitting a wall.  His other hand came up and started pushing his head back at a painful angle, then suddenly he howled in agony, releasing the Detective.  Elle had bitten him!  Worrying his calf like a mean dog, he tried to shake her off while yelling at his partner to get her off of him.  His partner though had obviously watched enough cop shows to believe that Harding had backup coming and shook his head before taking off out of the open front door.  The other man kicked Elle and Harding heard bone snap, he finally got his hand free and then shot the man point blank in the belly.  He howled in pain but shoved Harding back and ran out after his partner.  What the hell?  Who runs after getting shot?  Harding dropped down to check on a whimpering Elle, and she wiped blood off of her lips but not before he saw her teeth.  Her fangs, he supposed.  That chill he felt got worse, and he couldn't help what he said next.  “So it's true.  Everything in your diary.”  She looked up at him, obviously something had flipped a switch and a lightbulb had come on.  Her voice was soft, pained.  “I wondered what had happened to that.   It was stupid of me, we're not supposed to leave records but I hated the thought I was forgetting everything.”

He nodded, and helped her up, setting her down on the sofa before he moved to close her front door but he looked around to make sure the men were gone first.  He holstered his gun, and then went to sit next to her.  He lifted up her shirt and watched in wonder as her broken ribs pushed themselves back into place with unpleasant snapping noises, and her bruises began to slowly fade.  Those pretty eyes of hers watched him, and he was silent a moment, thinking of all the possibilities before cracking a lopsided grin and hesitantly speaking after taking her hand.  “So is this a bad time to ask if you'd like to be my girl?”  His heart pounded in his chest, wondering what she would do.  Would she kill him for knowing her secret or did that attraction they felt mean more to her than just sex and dinner?  She lifted her free hand to wipe away pink tinged tears and then flung herself into his arms, sighing softly as he wrapped his arms around her trembling form.  “Even though I'm a vampire?  You want that?”  He nodded, then whispered gently in her ear.  “Vampire or not, you're still my Elle.”  She laughed, a bare whisper of sound.  “Then Detective Harding, I think I'd really very much like to be your girl.”

Life sure throws you curveballs, even if technically you're not really alive.
When I started this I never thought I'd have someone like David Harding waiting around the corner for me.  Now I know what it's like to be wanted, loved, just for being me.  Vampire and all.  I don't go hunting anymore, and he's learning quickly how to deal with what else is out there that might be a threat to us.  I haven't talked to him about turning him yet, he does a lot of good as a police officer and I don't know if I should ask him to give that up.  Maybe if there was a way he could just work nights?  Eventually we'll need to have that talk, but right now I'm content with how things are.  Sanguine Rave is as popular as ever, and I'm glad of that too.  I feel like I belong here, that I contribute to the betterment of the community.  That's a good thing.  I'm not too happy about the pack of weres that roam around, but they haven't tried to mess with us since that night they broke into my house.  That doesn't mean they won't, but they've lost the element of surprise.  Even more surprising is that I now have another vampire working for me, she wandered in and spotted me right away, and begged me to let her stay.  I couldn't say no, not after she told me she was tired of being alone and just wanted somewhere she could belong.   Obviously that hit a nerve with me!  But Cecilia has proven herself to be a great employee and I feel it was a good decision to hire her.

I kind of wonder, does that mean more of our kind will come through?  Will I finally find out what happened to Isaac?  I think he'd like David, but I could never really truly tell what Isaac was thinking.  What we have here, it's like a family and I know it's worth everything that we put into it.

Heck, maybe one day Cecilia can find someone like David, if I can why not her too?  That makes me smile, and I wonder if something this good can last.  But I don't want to be negative, not anymore.  And I darn sure aren't going to go looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Others were already here, milling about and speaking to one another about this lot or that, hoping that they would be the ones to win a bid for something spectacular.  Always looking for that item that would be the 'career maker'.  There were amateurs in this crowd which was unusual for such an event, this first round should have been for a more exclusive clientèle.  She shook her head, trying to regain her cool but she was having a hard time forgetting the man that had spoken to her.  She almost missed the start of the auctions, only the smattering of applause at the reveal of the first lot brought her back to why she was there.  She had no idea how her eyes were still wide and her skin paled, she looked shaken to the core but somewhere deep inside a burning had started, a tingle spreading on her skin as her nerves came alive and warned her that something wasn't quite right here.

It was a good thing too because the man that helped steady her boxes before she dropped them would have made her lose her breath.  He was tall and handsome, a twinkle of amusement in his dark eyes and had a face that immediately made her think of Rudolph Valentino.  Valentino was never so pale, and wasn't that odd in a place so known for sunshine?  But that smile made her thoughts scatter and he had the sort of voice that her old friends would have described as 'panty-dropping'.  “Hey, are you all right?”

It had taken her an embarrassingly long time to gather her wits and stammer a reply.  “Y-yes, I'm sorry I wasn't watching where I was going!  It's my fault, s-sorry.  Uhm I'm Melody and I uh I'm just moving in.”

That amusement in his eyes went a little wicked and Melody felt her knees go a little weak.  “I see, I see.  You must be the new lady in Apartment 155.  Well this isn't how I'd have liked to have met you, but here we are.  I'm Dustin Jameson, Apartment 156 right across the hall.  If you need anything...”  his voice dropped a whole register and Melody felt a shiver go up her spine.  “And I mean
anything
, feel free to knock.  I might actually be home if it's you.”
