I turned, startled. Karayan sat on the back porch, shrouded in darkness. I must have walked right past her.

“Praying to angels—it’s never done much good as far as I can tell.” She rose from the old garden chair she’d settled onto.

“Karayan?” I scrambled awkwardly to my feet as Karayan made her way down the porch steps. She joined me in the grass, turning her face upwards. Overhead, a beautiful crescent moon shone in the clear night sky.

“Think you can still become human?” She didn’t look at me, just kept her gaze fixed on the moon.

I shrugged, suddenly conscious of how little my own desire mattered, compared to how much we had lost today. How much Karayan had lost. “It doesn’t matter,” I said.

Karayan turned to look at me. “Don’t. Don’t give up. You’re the only thing keeping me together right now.”

“Me?” I stared at Karayan, mystified.

“Hale believed in you,” Karayan whispered. I saw fresh tears glistening in the corners of her eyes.

I nodded. Maybe I would one day become human. Maybe I would not. Regardless, it was time to focus on the larger task at hand.

There was one battle left to fight in this war. And if we didn’t win it, we’d lose everything.

Lilith was coming.
