“I’ll get the light,” Mason stated and leaving Lily to get comfortable he climbed out of the small tent.
Lily watched him walk out into the darkness and for the first time in her life she was certain he would return and that his disappearing acts were long forgotten. Sure enough he was back in seconds brandishing a small camping lamp. The tent once again filled with light, this time the artificial but soft orange light of the lamp. “You’re soaking,” Lily complained as Mason sat by her side in the tiny confined space.
“Easily fixed,” Mason chuckled cheekily. He took hold of his dripping shirt and quickly pulled it over his head, discarding it in the corner of the tent.
Lily looked at him with an open mouth as his bare chest was illumined by the soft light. She reached out, unable to help herself and pressed a soft hand against his bronzed muscles. She followed the line of his black Celtic tattoos as they ran steadily down his chest. He cupped her hand, stopping her as she reached his stomach. His hand lingered, his thumb caressed hers as their eyes met.
No words needed to be spoken as Mason claimed her lips as hungrily as possible. He pushed her back onto the soft lining of the tent and pressed his bare chest against her own heaving one. Again and again he claimed her lips like they were the sweetest thing in existence, like they were the most addictive drug known to man. His lust rose to the surface as her hands snaked around his back, intertwining with his damp messy hair and pulling him closer.
Beneath her thin clothing he could feel her heart beating faster, the rapid rhythm causing shivers to race across his own body. Each kiss earned the softest desire-filled response from Lily as Mason told her everything he couldn’t put into words. He pressed his body down harder and she held him there, their need to be closer more intense now than it ever had been before. It was Lily who pulled away first, breathless and red-faced she looked up at the man who had given her everything she could have ever imagined.
She had never thought the words before but now as she looked into his bright blue eyes and felt the weight of his body so temptingly close to hers she felt the need to say them more than ever. “Mason, I…” she started but as quickly as the words had come he stopped them.
His lips claimed her once more, this time it was desperate as he searched her lips for the answer to his fears. She moaned against him and his hand clenched the tent floor relieving just a little of the tension that pounded his body relentlessly. “Lily no,” he said almost pleadingly as he pulled back for breath. Her heart was so fast now, pounding against his chest.
“I have to Mason,” she whispered, “If I don’t say it now then I’ll never get the chance,” she pleaded.
“You’re not going away for ever,” he stated but she could hear the uncertainty in his voice as well as he could.
“You’ll be gone when I get back, Mason we both know that,” Lily said, her voice desperate now.
Mason froze; the heat surging through him at Lily’s touch was now a stark reminder of what he was going to lose. “Then it’s not worth saying,” he stated, his voice cold was now as he pulled away from the woman who he desired to say the three words to more than anything. He never would though, he couldn’t; for her safety and for his he could never speak them.
“Mason, you are everything to me and I…” she paused, “I love you Mason, more than you will ever know
. I’m not scared to admit it anymore, even if it is the first and last time I will ever say it, it is still true,” she whispered and the second the last word left her trembling lips the tent fell silent except for the small patter of rain.
Mason turned to her, his eyes burning with an anger Lily had never seen in him before. “Take it back,” he demanded.
Lily backed away a little, she couldn’t bear to look at him like this, yet she had little choice. “Never,” she whispered biting her lip as the single word forced itself from them.
“If you don’t then I can’t leave you Lily, I won’t be able to let you go,” Mason said, his voice no longer angry but desperate.
Lily paused, she couldn’t leave him waiting; she knew he would but he couldn’t, not for her, not when he could be happy. “You can’t wait,” she breathed as tears fell quickly.
“I will find a way Lily,” Mason stated and against everything he had decided, everything he had come here to do he knew that he would find anyway to stay with her. Lily was his and however selfish it was, seeing her like this, he knew he just couldn’t leave her.
Lily looked at the man she loved, he hadn’t said he loved her, he hadn’t promised her the world but he had said he wouldn’t leave her. It was the impossible but just for now, with a thousand questions unanswered, it would be enough.

BAD BOY
ON HER MIND
By Elisa Elliot
Chapter One
Three weeks had passed since Lily returned to college and it had been three weeks since she had last heard from Mason. The college year had started out very much like the last, except of course Mason had been there to see her off. He waved her off side by side with her dad and with her on the long trip she took the promise he had made, the promise that he would not leave her forever. She held on to that promise and it had made parting from him so much easier. Now that he was gone without another word the hope that had been carefully kindled over the summer months was a dying flame.
Lily still loved Mason, however much she told herself that the silence between them meant only one thing; it told her that Mason had moved on. In three weeks he hadn’t answered a single text or replied to her multiple calls, in all the time she dared not let herself believe that he was over her. She didn’t want to think that the summer had just been a way to use her and now that she was gone she was ultimately forgotten. It had been the second week that had almost broke Lily, she had called her dad and after half an hour of mindless talk of unimportant things she had finally managed to bring up the topic of Mason; the mumbled response of her dad still caused her to shiver, ‘I haven’t seen him in days’.
With her college day in full swing and her ever silent phone placed carefully next to her, Lily rested her head on the desk. The lecture, to which Lily had paid no attention to, was almost over and if she was being honest with herself she had no idea what had happened in the last hour or so of her life. It was her friend, Hannah, who finally snapped her out of the dark daydream that had taken up most of her time, the one where she found Mason again only to lose him before she could reach him. It wasn’t the first time she had indulged in the day dream for however bad it may end, however quickly Mason was snapped away from her for one miraculous second she could see him and it was as if he had never left.
With a sharp and numbingly painful elbow to the side, Lily shot up from her desk, only now realizing the lesson was over and it was just her and Hannah left in the large lecture hall. Her startled awakening was met with a glare from her oldest friend, one who Lily knew was starting to lose faith that she would snap out of her misery. “You can’t keep going on like this,” Hannah scolded. Despite her harsh tone and frown Lily knew there was care beneath her friend’s words and in turn she offered her a small half-smile.
Lily grabbed her bag from beneath the desk and started packing away the books she hadn’t actually used before turning back to her friend. “I know,” she whispered as her voice broke and a tear threatened to spill. She had promised herself she wouldn’t cry over Mason; so far the promise had been broken more times than she dared to count.
“How long has it been since you spoke to him?” Hannah asked, letting all the roughness drop from her tone, ultimately she was just concerned about her friend.
Lily paused, reluctant to speak the words out loud, knowing the response she would get. Finally with a deep sigh she let herself utter them, “Three weeks,” she mumbled, her words barely audible even in the silent hall.
Hannah’s face screwed up and a frown settled on her face. “This isn’t you Lily, you don’t pine over a man,” she said sternly.
“It was you that told me to go for it,” Lily said, a little angrier than she had intended. She had known her friends were getting fed up but this was the first time any of them had voiced their concerns and it was met with less than welcome ears.
“And while I never thought I would say it, I was wrong Lily,” Hannah said with a sigh.
Lily’s mouth dropped, if there was one thing she never though Hannah would say then it was definitely that. “You don’t know him,” Lily shot back, she wasn’t about to drop the anger, the anger that had built up over the last few weeks. She didn’t want to direct it at her friend but in the absence of the one person who deserved it she had little choice.
“If this is how he treats you after everything you have told me about him then I don’t want to Lily, he’s not worth you,” Hannah said sympathetically now. Both could remember as clear as day the night they had spent on the first day back sharing their tales of the summer; on that first day and first day only Hannah had been happy for her friend but as time went on it seemed she was the only one of the two who could see the man who had abandoned her for what he really was.
Lily stared at the floor; she just couldn’t believe Mason had left her. “He’ll be back,” Lily whispered with as much certainty as she could muster.
With her bag thrown haphazardly over her shoulder she turned away from the friend that she knew was only looking out for her. “Lily wait,” Hannah shouted and when she didn’t turn she reached out and stopped Lily’s path, “Lily,” Hannah pleaded and this time to her immense gratitude Lily turned to face her.
“I don’t want to hear it Hannah,” Lily said firmly.
“I know Lily, but there’s something else, Chris and I have a surprise for you,” Hannah said, her excitement growing now that her friend was no longer frowning at her.
“What is it?” Lily asked curiously and Hannah smiled, Lily had never been one to stop being curious. “Wait!” Lily shouted before Hannah could answer her, “Did you say Chris?” she questioned quickly and Hannah saw the first genuine smile her friend had shared in weeks.
“Yes I said Chris but still it’s a surprise!” Hannah exclaimed. Lily shivered at the words as far too fresh memories of her last surprise came flooding back; they were memories she didn’t want but couldn’t let go of.
Hannah watched her closest friend, saw how certain words made her physically wince and how others filled her soft brown eyes with sorrow. The person she had known for so long was lost in the body of one who looked as though her world was about to come crashing down. She knew that if she ever met Mason, ever laid eyes on the man who had hurt her friend so badly she would make him suffer, he didn’t deserve her in the slightest.
Chapter Two
The college day finished quickly and much to Lily’s relief some of the sadness that claimed her was replaced with excitement, it was only the smallest part but it was enough to see the day through. With Chris being a year older than her and having graduated early it meant that she hadn’t seen him in months, and for her it was just far too long. He was her other best friend and the last addition to the trio she had been with most of her life, she had missed him more than she’d ever actually admit to the blonde haired giant she called her best friend.
“When’s Chris getting here?” Lily questioned Hannah for the third time since their last lesson had finished. Hannah laughed lightly as she finished getting dressed; if she had known it would be Chris who would snap her friend out of the sadness she would definitely have called him earlier.
The door to Lily’s college bedroom opened and a tall blonde haired man wandered into the room. “I didn’t know you had missed me so much,” he said as both Hannah and Lily turned to the new addition, one that was very much welcome.
A second of silence passed before Lily was in the man’s arms, very quickly followed by Hannah. For the smallest of moments Lily only felt happiness, the feeling was like she had remembered it to be but as soon as the bear-like embrace of her friend faded away the feeling was back to being a memory. “Chris,” Lily whispered as she stared at the man who had seemingly grown an extra foot over the last few months, not that she had ever imagined that to be possible.
“Wow, I guess you did miss me,” Chris chuckled as he ruffled Lily’s blonde hair fondly.
With a frown that held only a little annoyance Lily straightened her now messy hair back to its normal state and glared up at the bear of a man. “Looks like you haven’t changed,” she grumbled as Chris smirked down at her.
“Ah well if I changed you wouldn’t love me anymore,” Chris laughed, it took the room to fall silent before he realized his mistake and all eyes went to Lily.
Lily stood staring at the floor, Chris’s casual use of the word ‘love’ bothered her now when it had never done before. She couldn’t understand how he could use it so easily and in such a carefree way when the man she loved could never say it. The atmosphere in the room had changed, where there should have been happiness there was now worry and awkwardness, Lily felt guilty she had ruined the moment with her own troubles. She looked up at her two friends, the friends who would never leave and smiled; it was a smile just for them, it didn’t portray her emotions but right now it was them who mattered most. “I’d love you even if you changed,” she whispered to Chris but she didn’t even fool herself, the words where meant for Mason.
Chris didn’t hesitate; he wrapped Lily in hug, his arms completely swallowing her body and lifted her off the ground. It took her a second, just a moment of hesitation before she wrapped her arms back around him, enjoying it for what it was, comfort between two people who knew almost everything about the other. “No sadness tonight Lily, for me can you be happy?” he whispered softly into her ear, words only for her.
Lily pulled herself a little closer, enjoying every last part of the warmth before it would ultimately come to an end. “For you Chris, anything,” she whispered back.
As her feet touched back down on solid ground Lily found herself returning the two smiles that greeted her, she was truly happy with them around. “Where are we going anyway?” Lily asked if only to move the conversation on.
“I told you it’s a secret,” Hannah whined.
Chris sent Hannah a pleading look and in front of Lily’s eyes the resolve on her friends face melted away and she signed deeply. “Those puppy eyes will stop working one day Chris,” Hannah laughed.
Chris jumped up and clapped his hands in excitement. “But not today it seems,” he said excitedly.
“Guys…” Lily pushed, she was even more intrigued now than ever.
Hannah and Chris looked at each other, sharing a smile that made Lily frown; she really wanted to know now. “Well…” Hannah started, painfully slowly, “you said over the summer that you were starting to like motorbikes…” she said excitedly.
It took everything Lily had not to let her face drop; she would have picked anything, anything but bikes. “So we thought we would take you this dirt bike championship show thing,” Chris cut in, a wide smile on his face.
Lily had to stifle a laugh, one that right now she didn’t even think she was capable of. “Championship show thing? Sounds technical…” she said with a grin almost as big as Chris’s.
“Yeah well, it had bikes and stuff,” Chris said with a slight blush on his bronze cheeks.
“Sounds great,” Lily said quietly. She could imagine Mason’s face at the phrase ‘bikes and stuff’, it was almost funny to think of how angry he would be, but then a lot of things made Mason angry.
“No,” she whispered under her breath, too quietly for anyone else to hear. Tonight was not for him but for her friends, tonight she would be the old Lily not the person she had become.
Chapter Three
Mason had told Lily about motorbike competitions before, he had gone into detail about the atmosphere and about the actual trials but nothing he could have said could have prepared her for what awaited her. Stood in the middle of an enormous crowd, growing bigger by the second, Lily was completely and utterly amazed. It was everything Mason had described it to be and so much more, everywhere she looked there was something new, something more exciting than the last thing. It dawned on her the second she arrived that it was exactly where she wanted to be, not stuck in lessons or at math club but here, right in the middle of the action.
“This is amazing guys,” Lily exclaimed to the two people who clung to her in the crowd.
While the smile on Lily’s face that had formed when they left the car hadn’t faded, neither of her friends looked so convinced. “Yeah just great,” Hannah mumbled. Lily only laughed, her friend hadn’t exactly chosen the most appropriate of outfits and that was definitely coming back to haunt her now.
“I don’t know, it could grow on me,” Chris said as he shuffled out of the way of yet another sports bike that was pushed past them.
Lily looked at the bike in awe and like so many of the others she had seen she wished she could ride it. It had been so long since she had ridden and while being here brought back every last memory of those times she knew that she wouldn’t change a thing, she was glad she had come. “You’ll love it,” Lily shouted over the noise.
Chris and Hannah looked at their friend knowing that the two hour drive and the extremely expensive front row tickets were worth it just to see her with some life in her eyes again. “I’m sure we will, I think it’s time for us to go in,” Hannah said with a slight smile, she was shivering now and to her anything would be better than standing outside in the cold any longer.
“Really?” Lily shouted, “Let’s go then,” she urged, pulling her two friends forwards with the now moving crowd.
The inside of the building was so much more impressive than the outside to Lily. Surrounded by stands that were quickly filling was a large dirt track filled with jumps that Lily gawked at. It was a world away from her causal rides through the countryside, however thrilling they were at the time, this was serious and by the look of it extremely dangerous. “Is this safe?” Hannah wondered aloud as they found their seats at the front of the stands.
“It doesn’t look it,” Chris answered, a frown on his face.
