“Stop trying to make me laugh.” She scowled. “This is not a laughing matter. The problem is that I can’t for the life of me figure out how to pass you off as Jewish to my mother.”

“Hmm. I see your point. But I’m afraid the bigger problem is how to hide the fact that when we get married, the church will be Catholic. Maybe we could put a bunch of plants in front of the crucifixes?”

Something so breathtaking stole over her face he couldn’t fathom it.

“Holy early morning confessions. Is that a proposal?”

Cursing, Evan tried to figure out how to backpedal. “It wasn’t supposed to be. Not yet. See what you’ve done? You’ve turned me into a big fat blabbermouth who can’t watch what he says.”

“That’s okay. You’ve turned me into a big fat crybaby. It’s only fair,” she sniffed.

“I do want to marry you though, so you should probably start thinking about your acceptance speech.”

“Eh.” She shrugged. “I was thinking about letting you read the answer right here.”

She pointed to her temple, and the only thing he could see shining from her beautiful eyes was
yes
.

Brayden was in the kitchen of the main house at the Villa Sucre, making a quick bite of lunch, when he caught sight of Evan marching up the path from the ocean.

He glanced at the ceiling, mentally calculating how long he had for a conversation.

Two minutes at least. He’d send Evan off to find Mick if it took any longer than that.

He stepped outside and held out his hand. “Hey, man. What brings you our way again? More carpentry?”

“In a manner of speaking.” Evan explained how they’d quit ReefCo.

“Whoa. Well, sounds like the right call.”

“Yeah. But it leaves me looking for something to do with myself.”

“Ah.” Brayden thought about the plate of food he’d just finished assembling. “I have a lunch meeting I’m about to head into, with a local citizen, but can you stick around for a few hours? We can head into town and get something to eat for an early dinner. Mick’s working on a new land deal with the estate, and we might be breaking ground on a training facility pretty soon. Could use a guy like you on that project.”

“That sounds exactly like what I’m looking for.” Evan held out his hand again, and after they shook on it, Brayden pointed around the corner.

“You’ll find a moped over there. Helmet’s on the seat, key’s in the ignition. Head into town; it’s a straight shot down the road. We’ve got an office on the main drag, that’s where you’ll find Mick and his woman, Cara.”

Evan gave him a curious look.

Brayden wouldn’t be explaining any further. “I’ll meet you there in a few hours.”

Evan shrugged. “Okay, man. Enjoy your meeting.”

Oh, he would.

He headed back inside, locking the kitchen door behind him.

Picking up the plate of fresh fruit, cheese, chocolate, and soft, flaky bread, he took the stairs two at a time.

Arielle was right where he’d left her.

Of course she was. She was tied up with nowhere to go.

“Sorry about that,” he said with a lazy grin. “Someone dropped by. Now, where were we?”

She gave a frustrated moan that turned into a sigh when he slid a small piece of sweet pineapple over her lips. She licked his fingertips clean of the sticky juice before answering. “Halfway between orgasm three and four.”

He traced the network of silky black ropes crisscrossing her body. “Yes, yes we were.”

“That was close,” she whispered as he sank to his knees in front of her. “One of these days we’re going to get caught.”

Brayden didn’t know what to say to that. Yeah, they probably couldn’t hide their secret affair forever. And the second they were busted, she’d be done with him.
