“Mmm.”
“I mean, Elizabeth Taylor did it, didn’t she? Why not remarry your ex? Why don’t we just do that, darling, and nip down to the register office? Or would you like a church wedding again?”
“Well…”
“Oh no, we can’t,” he added, “I was forgetting—Catholics aren’t allowed to remarry in church. On the other hand,” he went on animatedly, “they might make an exception for us, as divorcées who are marrying each other again. Shall we look into that, darling? I could write to the Pope.”
“Mmm…”
“It would be rather
nice
to have another wedding, wouldn’t it?” he continued. “I really like that idea. Do you think Lily will want to be bridesmaid again? And what do you think I should wear? Graham could be an usher. He’s got a lot of sheepdog, so he’d do it well. He could wear a nice white ribbon through his collar—the kids would love it—oh yes, I can see it now. And we could have a really swanky reception this time, in a smart hotel. With a jazz band,” he went on dreamily. “And real champagne, of course. And the good thing is we’d get lots of presents. Yes, Faith, we could have a bit of a do. I mean, wouldn’t you like that, Faith? A really nice wedding? And of course a
fabulous
honeymoon. Come on darling, you’ve gone rather quiet, tell me what you think.” I looked up at him and smiled.
“Peter,” I said carefully. “It sounds lovely. And I’m very honored, of course. But isn’t it a bit, you know—premature?”
“Premature?”
“You see, darling, I really don’t think we should rush into anything. After all—marriage is a
very
big step!”
