“Feudalism,” strictly defined, refers to a specific set of political, economic, and social relationships between lords and vassals in medieval and late-medieval Europe. Here and elsewhere I use “feudal” in a broader sense, covering both hierarchical social attitudes and land-based, stratified economic relationships similar to, but not strictly the same as, European feudalism.
