LIME

Substance: that can supply calcium to the soil and plants while neutralizing acidic conditions. Very effective in sprays to control or kill many pests. It can be used to change the pH of the soil to make it more alkaline. Other forms include quicklime or hydrated lime. Lime draws water out of insects and causes them to dehydrate.

MICROBIALS

These are natural occurring microscopic organisms that can be found in the environment and can be produced on a large scale.

MILKY SPORE DISEASE

This is the common name for
B
acillus popilliae
, which is a naturally occurring bacterium that kills the Japanese beetles and other beetle pests. It is placed into the soil and the grubs eat the bacterium, which turns their clear blood milky and kills them.
It may be harmful to fish so it would be best to keep it away from fish ponds md lakes.

Nc NEMATODE

An organism: that lives in the soil and is microscopic in size. It is worm-like and comes in several strains. They will feed and reproduce inside insects and eventually kill them. There are bad nematodes that attack and kill plants.

NEEM

Neem™ is produced from the margosa tree, which is an evergreen tropical tree that has insecticidal properties. In the United States the tree only grows in Florida and California. This is one wood termites will not eat. There are about 150 insects that are repelled by the extracts of this tree. It can be purchased under the name Margosan-O™ in most garden shops.

NPV

Nuclear polyhedrosis virus is an insect pathogen that has been registered for a limited number of pests and causes a disease process to occur. It is a microscopic organism or microbe.

NYMPH

This is a stage in the life cycle of a number of insects between the egg stage and adult. The life cycle of insects with a nymph stage is called incomplete metamorphosis since there is no pupae or cocoon stage.

ORGANIC

The most natural method of insect control: utilizing the least dangerous methods or chemicals to control insects. This method may employ many homemade sprays and remedies.

PUPAE

This is a stage in the life cycle of a number of insects between the larvae and adult stages. It is usually inactive in the cocoon or a hard shell found in the soil.

PYRETHRUM

It is produced from the dried flowers of the daisy plant
Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium
, which is mainly grown in Africa and is the only chrysanthemum plant with the effective pest control affects. It was used against body lice for hundreds of years. Do not purchase pyrethrum if it is combined with any other pesticide. The plant has been known to cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

This is a potent stomach poison that affects insects and is prepared from the extracts of the tropical plants derris and cube.

RYANIA

A natural insecticide that is safe to use around humans and pets. Produced from the ryania plant that is native to Trinidad and is a relative of the tobacco plant. Has the effect of incapacitating the insect’s ability to eat and they starve to death. Best used on caterpillars, codling moths, spiders Japanese beetles, thrips, moths and fleas.

SABADILLA

Produced from the South American lily it is an organic pesticide dust that has been in use since the sixteenth century. The plant has also been used to lower blood pressure. It does kill a wide range of pests; however, it is toxic to toads and bees.
This is the most toxic pesticide to humans and animals.
It is effective against grasshoppers, codling moth larvae, armyworms, European corn borer, silkworms, aphids, cabbage loopers, melonworm, chinch bugs, webworm, greenhouse leaftier and the harlequin bug.

SILICA AEROGEL

Has the ability to dehydrate the bugs by absorbing moisture from the bug’s outer surface. The particles in the gel have the ability to absorb hundreds of times their weight in moisture.

SULFUR

This is one of the oldest known pesticides: even the Egyptians used it to fumigate their granaries. It should be used when the temperature is over 70
F and under 90
F for the best results. A powder form is now available for dusting plants. It should not be used within 2 months of spraying horticultural oils.

TANGLFOOT

Sticky substance produced from castor oil gum residues and vegetable waxes.

TRICHOGRAMMA

This is a very small insect that lays its eggs inside other insect’s eggs and causing the host egg to die.
