Waking slowly from a dreamless sleep, Nikki felt for Grant next to her in bed, but came up empty. He was gone. Her eyes fluttered open. As if sensing her standing in the threshold watching him, he stopped swimming at the far end of the pool and came to the surface, treading water. Turning, his eyes found hers and he gave her a smile and a short wave.

Unwrapping herself from the sheet she draped it over one of the wooden lounge chairs and slowly made her way over to the pool under Grant's watchful eye. She dipped a tentative toe into the water and was pleased at how perfect the temperature was. Cool enough to be refreshing, but warm enough to be comfortable. He was right, it

perfect.

As she carefully made her way down the steps and into the pool Grant swam over to meet her. As he drew closer the first thing she noticed was how rejuvenated he looked. The worried and weary look that she had been seeing so frequently in his eyes was gone.

Stepping off of the final step, she found the water came to mid-chest on her. Holding her breath she submerged herself and when she came back up Grant was standing in front of her, less than a foot away.

What time is it? Why didn't you wake me?"
