more mature roles and handled mature situations. But now she’s the Miley Cyrus commonly seen as the “liberated” singer; the first thing that pops into everyone’s minds when they see her is that she was the one who “twerked” on the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.

Was there any reason for this sudden change of heart? Miley says that this is her real personality. For better or worse, life is a growing experience and Miley has done it in front of our eyes and the wise can learn from her experience.

Chapter 1 – A Child, A Singer, and a Celebrity

Destiny Hope Cyrus, or Miley Cyrus as she is more popularly known, was born on the 23
rd
of November, 1992. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee to parents Billy Ray Cyrus and Letitia Jean “Tish” Cyrus.

She has five siblings from the marriages of her parents, all involved in the entertainment industry at some point – Brandi and Trace, her mother’s kids from a previous relationship, Christopher Cody, her dad’s kid from another relationship, and Braison Chance and Noah Lindsey, two other siblings that she got after her parents got hitched.

She was named Destiny Hope because her parents believed she was meant to do great things in her life. As an infant, she often smiled, so she was given the nickname “Smiley,” which was later on changed and shortened to “Miley.” Later on, she changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus in honor of her beloved grandfather. Today, her grandmother alone is allowed to call her by the name “Destiny.”

Miley has country music icon Dolly Parton for a godmother who appeared in a few Hannah Montana episodes as the in-show Miley’s “Aunt Dolly.”

of July, 2008, she and Billy Ray appeared on the cover of People Magazine, where he mentioned that they’re doing their best to keep Miley grounded. She may be a famous celebrity, but in the household, she still did chores, attended church weekly, and got grounded and punished when necessary.

Miley and Billy Ray’s music career

Miley was really involved in Billy Ray’s music career. One of her early gigs was cleaning up all the gifts, trinkets, flowers, and even women’s underwear that was thrown onto the stage during her father’s concerts. All the thrown things (not including the underwear) were then re-gifted to hospitals and charities.

She grew up loving her father’s single, “Achy Breaky Heart,” and it has become her favorite song. The first performance she made was singing “Hound Dog,” a popular Elvis Presley song.

Hannah Montana

Miley’s interest in acting came about when she went with her father to see a performance of the hit stage musical “Mamma Mia!” She grabbed her father’s arm and told him that this was what she wanted to do – to be an actress.

Miley learned about the casting of Hannah Montana – a Disney Channel series about a young brunette girl with a secret life as a blonde pop star – when she was 11. She initially auditioned for the role of the lead’s best friend, but she was told instead to do an audition for the lead part, “Chloe Stewart.”

Initially, Miley was told that she wasn’t fit for the role; the producers told her she was too small and too young for the part. But because of her acting and singing abilities, she was able to beat out 1,000 hopefuls and was given the lead position. The lead’s role was renamed “Miley Stewart” after herself.

Her father, Billy Ray, also plays a part in the series – on the show, he’s her fictional dad and manager. And so, to better accommodate filming, Miley and her family moved to Los Angeles in 2005.

Hannah Montana became a success after it premiered on the 24
th
of March, 2006. For a Disney program, it had a massive audience, and it became one of the highest-rated series on cable television.

In 2006, Miley released the Hannah Montana soundtrack. In 2007, another album was released titled “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” and she launched a tour for “Best of Both Worlds.” Both were successful; the concerts’ tickets were sold out in a flash, and the tour was extended by 2 weeks to accommodate her fans. A 3D concert film was also released in 2008 which earned $31.3 million during its opening weekend.

Hannah Montana was what clearly propelled Miley Cyrus to fame and fortune. In 2007 alone, it was said that she had earned $18.2 million.

Chapter 2
– Miley Cyrus: Life after Disney

Miley Cyrus was launched into fame by “Hannah Montana.” It was the show that catapulted Miley into stardom, and that made her a household name. It was the series that launched both her acting and singing career.

However, growing up in the eyes of the public wasn’t really a walk in the park for Miley. Her father, Billy Ray, was even reportedly heard saying that Hannah Montana was something they regret doing.

Miley, on the other hand, said on Saturday Night Live while hosting, that “Hannah Montana is dead.” She is now making music the number one priority in her life.

Leaving Disney

In 2010, Miley Cyrus quit the show that made her famous. But why did she leave Hannah Montana?

Miley may have earned over $742 million in the Disney series, but she decided to leave the show because it was something that she had grown out of, and she wished to develop her pop career further instead.

Miley added that Disney made a mold for her to fit into, but she wanted to break free from that mold and be another person instead. She added that when she was younger, she wanted to be famous, and she wanted everybody’s recognition. But as she grew up – and as Hannah Montana grew up – she also grew out of the role. As she grew older, she realized she doesn’t want to be somebody she’s not.

She also starred in the movie “The Last Song,” and gave her voice to Penny, one of the lead characters in the animated Disney movie “Bolt.” In 2011, Forbes named Miley as the second-richest teenager, surpassed only by Justin Bieber.

She was named Favorite Movie Actress for her movie role in Hannah Montana –beating competition such as Selena Gomez, Miranda Cosgrove and Keke Palmer – but she stands by her decision to stay out of acting for now and focus on her music.

Growing Up

In 2008, a teenage hacker leaked photos of Miley wearing swimsuits, and some other photos that showed her in just her underwear. She described the photos as silly and inappropriate, but she nonetheless apologized to people whom she may have disappointed.

Another controversial moment was when Miley, at around age 15, posed topless for a Vanity Fair shoot. The New York Times later clarified that Miley wasn’t topless, but was instead covered by a bed sheet.

It turns out that some people were actually waiting – or expecting, rather – for Miley to act less “traditional,” like some teenagers do. Time Magazine even mentioned in an article that since she is facing adulthood in three to five years (The article was written in 2008.), she will choose to change her image, and that change will be sure to be met with some adversity.

In the coming years, this statement has been proven to be true, as people have reacted rather violently to Miley’s various changes to her image, but she still has a massive amount of loyal followers who like her no matter what she does.

– Miley’s Matters of the Heart

Miley not only made headlines because of her acting and singing career, but also because of her romantic life which was indeed very colorful.

Nick Jonas (2006 – 2007)

Miley and the Jonas Brothers front man dated for a while; their relationship lasted around a year. They parted ways, though, and it resulted in some bruised feelings. Miley admitted to rebelling on everything Nick wanted her to become; she felt she had to be herself and realized is was better to be who she really was instead of trying to conform to someone else’s expectations.



Justin Gaston (Sept 2008 – June 2009)

Justin was four years older than Miley but it didn’t prevent them from dating and going out. Justin was an underwear model who dated Miley for nine months. It was Miley who broke up with Justin, and she did it before going to Australia for the filming of her movie “The Last Song.” When they broke up, Miley’s tweet said that “tears are the words hearts can’t express.”



Liam Hemsworth (first part; Sept 2009 – Aug 2010)

Liam was Miley’s leading man for “The Last Song.” Miley said Liam was her first serious boyfriend. Their relationship, however, ended in August 2010.



Mike Posner (Nov 2010)

Miley was at the time 17, but she was rumored to be hooking up with Mike Posner, a singer. Posner denied the rumors, though, because she was too young for him; he was already 22 during this time.



Miley was also seen with Avan, a Nick star, during Miley’s 18

debut party. No other news was heard about them, though, and no updates were heard if their relationship got more serious.

Liam Hemsworth (second part; Apr 2011 – Sept 2013)

Miley and Liam got back together in 2011. After a year, in June 2012, the two got engaged. The engagement lasted more than a year, but sadly, the engagement ended and the couple called it quits in September 2013 after the notorious MTV twerking incident.

Over the years, Miley has had her share of boyfriends, both rumored and official, but it can be observed that she took her relationship with Liam Hemsworth very seriously.

Liam and Miley: a Timeline

In June 2009, Miley and Liam met while filming “The Last Song.” It was said that Liam was Miley’s crush, and Miley paid a twelve-year old kid ten dollars to find out if it was a mutual crush.

After three months, a picture circulated showing Miley and Liam kissing, and that picture confirmed that the two of them were dating. As previously mentioned, they broke up for the first time in August 2010.

It was said that a month later, Liam and Miley reconciled and got back together. But they split again in November 2010.

Apparently their love for each other was strong and they got back together – the two reconciled in April 2011 and continued their relationship. They were first rumored to be engaged in July 2011, and the said rumors grew stronger as Miley spent time with Liam’s family in Costa Rica around December 2011.

Finally, in June 2012, Liam and Miley announced their engagement, and Miley was said to have received a 3.5-carat diamond ring priced around $250,000 dollars from jeweler Neil Lane.

The journey may have been sweet, with its fair share of bumps on the way, but after four years, the couple decided called it quits. No reason was given for the break-up, but sources say that the break-up was initiated by Miley, because she believed Liam wasn’t really faithful to her. Others believe the MTV twerking incident played a large role in the breakup.

According to Miley, she’s currently obsessed with being alone. She wants to focus on her career and be clear on everything that she’s doing. Miley claims that she is happy, and that she will use her free time to gather her thoughts and learn as much as she can from her experiences.

Skull tattoo

Both Miley and Liam have matching skull tattoos on their ankles, both of which were spotted in 2011. Both of them have colorful sugar skulls which are symbols associated with the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday.



Theodore Roosevelt quote

Miley sports a long tattoo on her left forearm, which says “…so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.” This line was uttered by Theodore Roosevelt in 1910 in a speech in Paris. The tattoo reminds Miley to live life without fear of criticism or failure lest she turn into one of those “cold and timid souls.”

Liam, in turn, has on his arm the previous line of that speech. “If he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”
