Chapter One

Reese Howard stared at the buxom beauty currently serving coffee in Riser Wood’s café. Bethany Young had been living in Riser Wood ever since she was a little girl. The little girl had grown into a beautiful, curvy woman. Reese wasn’t known for loving curvy women. He usually liked fucking women of the pack who were more than happy to offer him their pussy. She was unlike any of the women he’d known. His pack was desperate for him to settle down, make some future Alpha, but none of the pack females appealed to him. He shouldn’t be able to mate with a human woman, and Bethany was pure woman. There was no shifter blood inside her.

Sipping at his coffee, he wrinkled his nose and waved his hand.

She turned, and he saw the frown on her face. “Did I mess up your order again?” she asked.

“It’s no problem. If you could just add a couple of sugars to this, I’ll be happy.” He purposely ordered the wrong thing just so she’d keep coming back.

“I’m so sorry.” She took his cup, and he watched as she changed his order. It helped that he was good friends with Alexander—who went by Alex—the bear shifter who owned the café.

“You’re making her think she’s going crazy,” Alex said, suddenly appearing beside him.

“It’s harmless.”

“Why don’t you just ask her out?” Alex asked.

“I’m not a teenager.” He was the alpha of Riser Wood’s pack. Men and women looked to him for respect and guidance.

“No, but you’re willing to drive a poor human insane by ordering different stuff and pretending you didn’t. That’s what is insane. I bet she’d give you a chance.”

Staring across the table at his friend, Reese had to wonder how he got himself into this mess. “I can’t date her.”

“Why not?”

“She’s human, Alex.”

“So. She’s not good to mate with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun. The pack doesn’t stop you from living a life.”

No, but it stopped him from mating with a human. It was forbidden, unheard of, unnatural.

They stopped talking as Bethany approached. “Here you go, and I’m so sorry about that.”

“Don’t worry about it, Beth. Reese has always been… difficult.”

“I just wish I can get it right.” She offered a quick smile and rushed back toward the main counter within the café. Reese stared at her full ass as it moved away from him. He wanted her so badly, and he smelled her innocence, which was simply intoxicating.

His dick swelled, and he grabbed his coffee, taking a sip of the sweetened brew.

“Do you see what I mean? She’s a sweet girl. Either date her or leave her.”

“I can’t date her.”

“No. You just can’t mate her, or you give up the right to the pack. Any children you have wouldn’t be considered alpha as her blood weakens it.”

“I’m not looking to mate.”

“Not what I heard.”

Reese was getting tired of this conversation already. “Tell me, Alex, what have you heard?”

“Most of the single females are trying to win your affection with baked goods, sex, and anything that might appeal them to you.” Alex leaned on his hands, raising a brow.

“Don’t you have any bears to tame?”

“Nope. You see, bears don’t have the same rules as wolves. We know we’re awesome, and don’t need to worry about keeping our blood pure. That’s what is so good about being a bear.” Alex rapped his knuckles on the table, getting up. “Think about it. That hard-on you’re sporting isn’t going to go away all by itself.”

Alex was the kind of guy who didn’t have a filter. Clearly, the guy didn’t possess one, and if he did, he didn’t know how to use it. Reese returned his attention to Bethany, who was now cleaning one of the tables. She was too damn sweet for her own good.

If the pack didn’t have that stupid law that forbade an alpha from mating with a human, he would have totally gone there. It wasn’t just alphas, though, any pack member who mated with a human was expelled. Five years ago, Reese had to do the same with a guy from the Riser Woods—Malcolm his name had been. Expelling him from the pack had been easy, but then, five years ago, Bethany hadn’t called to him as if he was a moth and she the flame.

Sipping his coffee, he watched as she walked around the shop, dealing with customers, cleaning, every now and then stopping to tie her long hair back up into a ponytail. He wanted her. There was no denying his need for her. She was a fucking siren, and he intended to have a taste of her.

Only the pack came first. The pack will always come first.

Getting to his feet, he made his way out of the café, wishing he didn’t have to leave. The scent of Bethany was overshadowed by the smell of brewing coffee, which was not as appealing as her peaches and cream scent. He’d give anything to taste her.

He stood beside his bike and straddled the machine, looking into the window.

She didn’t look toward him.

Gritting his teeth, Reese willed her to look toward him so that he knew it wasn’t just him that felt this raw connection between them.

Bethany went about her day without looking at him.

Turning over the ignition, he shot out from the café, heading toward his cabin in the woods. No one came to his cabin unless they wanted to hurt. Twenty minutes later, he got to his cabin to find several dishes on his front patio. The pack women were all vying for his affection. None of them would ever be with him unless he wanted a quick fuck that allowed him the release he wanted. Most of the time he thought about Bethany as he fucked the pack women.

No matter how much he wanted Bethany, he couldn’t have her.

Draco smiled at Bethany. He’d just enjoyed a light lunch, and was happy simply watching her flit around the café. Reese had already come and gone. The scent of his Alpha hung heavy in the air.

Reese liked Bethany, just like he did. The way Alex was looking at her, her boss had a thing for her as well.

“Is everything to your liking?” she asked.

“It’s perfect. It always is.”

“You do eat here a lot.”

“I have to say I enjoy your company.” He did enjoy her. He enjoyed everything about her.

Her cheeks heated just as he knew they would. She rarely took compliments well.

“Thank you. Would you like a refill on that coffee?”

“Yes, I’d love it.”

She turned away, swaying those hips, and that perfect round ass that he wanted naked beneath him.

“Everything okay?” Alex asked, coming over.

Besides his dick feeling ready to punch through the fabric of his jeans, he was more than okay.

“I’m fine.”

“Hey, Alex,” Bethany said, coming back.

Draco wanted to hit Alex. How dare he stop him from enjoying the view of her returning. He didn’t even get to see her tits bounce. The uniform she wore covered up too much flesh. As a wolf, he liked being naked, walking around with no clothes on. He’d be at home now, naked as the day he was born, but he liked coming to the café. Even though his Alpha had made his claim on her, Draco wouldn’t miss a chance to see Bethany.

Reese hadn’t done anything other than spend every available minute at the café, staring at her.

You had to be blind to miss the obvious attraction. Draco understood it. Every time he looked at Bethany, he wanted her. That want never faded, it only increased. Either way, he wasn’t going to upset his Alpha.

He would, if there was even a shot of her being his mate.

There was always a lingering scent, a tempting tease that came from Bethany, but it was nothing strong. Half the time Draco was convinced he was only scenting what he wanted to believe was there. Nothing was going to change that.

“Your Alpha was here not long ago.”

“I know. I can smell him, Bear.”

“So, you have a thing for Bethany as well.”

“She’s a nice woman. Kind.”

Draco found her refreshing. She was kind without any force necessary.

“I wonder what Reese would say to your interest.”

“Probably the same as you if he knew you had a wandering eye.”

* * * *

From the first moment Bethany entered his shop looking for a job, Alex had known she was special. She didn’t try to flirt with him or lie to him. She was open, honest, and told it to him straight. Bethany had needed a job, and she had no training in waitressing at all. She was keen to learn, interested in sticking to the job, and she wouldn’t upset anyone.

What she didn’t know was the moment she walked through his café, she’d already gotten the job.

Alex liked watching her. He enjoyed her voice, and she made him feel again.

For over forty years he’d been a bear shifter. His kind were not known for keeping in packs. There were some of his kind around, and they considered him their Alpha, but other than that, nothing. He found bonding with females difficult.

Bethany had a natural air to her. Her presence thrilled him, and she calmed the raging loneliness of his bear.

“Are you okay?” she asked, coming to stand in front of him. He was resting his head on his hand, and leaning on the counter, it put him in line with her heavy tits.

There went his cock again, wanting what he couldn’t have. There was no way he could ever take Bethany as his own. Bears were stronger, and their women needed to be sturdier to take them.

Bethany was all curves, and softness, but she didn’t have the strength.

So, instead of taking her like he wanted, he waited. He watched as Reese and Draco came in, day in, day out, flirting with her. She was completely oblivious to the interest. It was another element he found refreshing about her. Bethany didn’t expect every single man to fall at her feet in love with her.

“I’m fine, sweetie. Just getting old,” he said.

She chuckled. “You are far from old. Lighten up. Maybe you should do one of those, erm, what are they called, dating apps or something? I don’t know. You’re too young to be sad and give up.”

“You think I need to date?”

“Maybe. You’re looking sad a lot lately.” She reached out, putting her hand on his arms. He felt the zing from her touch. The kindness in her eyes drew him closer. “You’ll find her. Smile for me.”

Alex couldn’t help it, he smiled.

“See, you’ll feel better in no time.” She gave his arm a gentle squeeze, and went back to work.

I won’t feel better. I want what I can’t have.

* * * *

“Do you need me to check the stock, Alex? I don’t mind,” Bethany said, flicking the closed sign on the door. It was dark, and she hated the dark.

“No. You don’t need to do that.”

“Okay.” She stepped up toward the counter, and finished wiping away the mess.

“Beth, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.” Alex was a good boss, she liked him a lot. He was sweet, and even though she had no waiting experience, he’d still hired her. Turning toward him, she waited for whatever he wanted to ask.

“Reese, the guy you serve coffee to.”

“The one I always get wrong?” she asked then cringed. She shouldn’t be admitting to her boss that she screwed up. When she took Reese’s order, she was always sure she got it right, and she either forget the sugar, or the honey, or the cream. Maybe she should go and see the doctor to make sure she wasn’t losing her mind. One occurrence of her forgetting she could understand, now she forgot something about his coffee. Part of her wondered if it was because he liked her coming toward his table, but immediately, she pushed that thought to the back of her mind. If a guy was trying to come onto you, he would just ask you out.

“What do you think of him?”

“He’s okay, I guess. I’m surprised he keeps on coming around, really.”

“Why?”
