That afternoon, Abul received a phone call. Kathy heard him rush out of the house. She watched from the window as he backed the BMW out of the driveway and sped down the street.

The next afternoon Madam Khe phoned Kathy. “I have good news for you, Mrs. Ryan,” she said. Kathy’s heart pounded. She closed her eyes and waited. There was a dry chuckle on the line before Madam Khe continued. “Abul was told yesterday that Mr. Satomi wanted to promote him. Satomi’s private jet was ready to take him to Japan. Abul thought the promotion meant he would replace me.” She chuckled again. “Far out over the Pacific, at 30,000 feet the pilots asked Abul if he’d like to fly the jet. Of course, the egotistic moron slid into the pilot’s seat. They let him stay in the pilot’s seat for a while, then asked him if he could bring the plane down to 10,000 feet. It’s a simple thing to do. Abul managed it. Then, the pilots asked Abul if he now thought he could fly.” Madam Khe paused for effect. “Of course, the stupid braggart said, ‘It’s easy’. With that two of Mr. Satomi’s bodyguards dragged Abul from the cockpit, opened the cargo hatch, and threw him out.” She laughed again. “Apparently he couldn’t fly at all.” She hung up.

Kathy smiled to herself.
