My eyes skimmed the lot, seeing a silhouette just
outside the edge of the safety lights. That had to be Jamison. I
moved as quickly as I could in my heels, coming to a stop before
him. “So… What happens now?”

He took a step forward, the light from above bringing
his features into focus. He was dressed all in riding leathers and
I saw a motorcycle parked behind him. “That depends on your
decision here and now, Kacea. Either you leave with me, or life as
we know it ends. The Aesir need you to retake control of things.
Without Skadhi, they can’t recapture and torture Loki. If you go
back into that prom, Thor –who you should be able to sense, by now-
will find you and convince you that doing what they want is the
only way.”

“And what’s your position in all of this? Why are you
helping me?” I clutched my stupid purse that matched my dress, my
voice thick with tears I didn’t want to let loose. I could feel his
presence now, like an ominous and distant rumble that made the very
core of me tremble.

He gave me a humorless grin, long eyeteeth flashing
in the dim light. “I’ve been around a while, Kaysh… I like this
world the way it is. If humanity gets annihilated, where does that
leave me?”

“Selfish, but I get it.”

“Good girl.” He tossed me a backpack and pointed back
behind him, leaning against his bike. “Go change, then. We’ve gotta
make this quick, before my mask over you fades enough that Thor
feels your presence.”

“What?”

He rolled his eyes. “You think you can ride on the
back of a Harley in that dress? There’re some clothes in the bag.
Hop to it.”

Practical… When I looked into the bag, I was appalled
at the fact that everything was black leather, and of the
fits-like-a-glove variety. I grumbled as I changed, surprised that
everything actually fit. I balled my dress up and took off my
heels, stuffing them and my purse into the bag. I rejoined him,
almost having trouble getting the zipper on the jacket done up to
my neck. “I’d ask how you knew what size I wear, but I’m sure you
have some ‘I’m older than dirt’ answer.”

He smirked. “Smart girl.” He climbed astride the
motorcycle, handing me a helmet with an apologetic look. “Sorry
this is going to wreck your hair.”

I gave him a sad laugh and put it on, climbing on
behind him and wrapping my arms around his slender frame. “Of all
the things that have been destroyed tonight, my hair is the least
of my worries…” I mumbled into his back, glad he couldn’t see the
tears that rolled their winding way down my face.

Jamison kick-started the bike and took off at a
normal rate of speed, waiting until we hit the highway before
accelerating. We must have gone for hours before he finally stopped
to refuel. I hit the ATM, draining as much from my savings account
as I could in one go. A few more days of that and it would be
empty. We’d be untraceable. Almost.

I handed Jamison my phone and he crumpled it in his
fist like a piece of paper. He tossed the remnants into the trash
by the gas pumps, and I fought the achy feeling in my chest. The
world around me swam in my vision, but I squashed the tears before
they could escape me again. He gave my shoulder a squeeze of
reassurance and we were off again.

I had no idea where we were going, but I hoped it
would be far enough from Elm Valley that everyone would be safe. I
couldn’t even say goodbye, to anyone. And worst of all…

“Jynxx… I’m sorry.”
