Jesus Casts Out
an Unclean Spirit
31
Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
32
And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
33
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice,
34
saying, “Let
us
alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

35
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in
their
midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.
36
Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this
is!
For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
37
And the re-port about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed
38
Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.
39
So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it size="3s a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old one.
36
Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one;
a
otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was
taken
out of the new does not match the old.
37
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined.
38
But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.

39
And no one, having drunk old
wine,
immediately
a
desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

6 Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first
a
that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate
them,
rubbing
them
in
their
hands.
2
And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”
3
But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:
4
how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?”
6
And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Healing on the Sabbath
6
Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered.
7
So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.
8
But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood.
9
Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?”
a
10
And when He had looked around at them all, He said to the man,
a
“Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.
b
11
But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles
12
Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
13
And when it was day, He called His disciples to
Himself;
and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:
14
Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;
15
Matthew and Thomas; James the
son
of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;
16
Judas
the son
of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude
17
And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples d will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the un-thankful and evil.
36
Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Do Not Judge
37
“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
38
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
39
And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?
40
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.
41
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?
42
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that
is
in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that
is
in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit
43
“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
44
For every tree is known by its own fruit. For
men
do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.
45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart
a
brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build on the Rock
46
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
47
Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
48
He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.
a
49
But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell.
a
And the ruin of that house was great.”
Jesus Heals a
Centurion’s Servant

7 Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum.
2
And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die.
3
So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant.
4
And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving,
5
“for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”
7
Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter underthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
8
For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does
it.

9
When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”
10
And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.

Jesus Raises the Son
of the Widow of Nain
11
Now it happened, the day after,
that
He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.
12
And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.
13
When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
14
Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried
him
stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
15
So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.
16
Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.”
17
And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

John the Baptist Sends
Messengers to Jesus
18
Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.
19
And John, calling two of his disciples to
him,
sent
them
to Jesus,
a
saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
20
When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another? ’”
21
And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
22
Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that
the
blind see,
the
lame walk,
the
lepers are cleansed,
the
deaf hear,
the
dead are raised,
the
poor have the gospel preached to them.
23
And blessed is
he
who is not offended because of Me.”

24
When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
25
But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.
26
But what did you go out to see thediv>
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
a
28
For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist;
a
but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29
And when all the people heard
Him,
even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
30
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
31
And the Lord said,
a
“To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like?
32
They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:

‘ We played the flute for you, And you did not dance;
We mourned to you, And you did not weep.’
