The man nods at me slowly, “there’s a homeless man who sleep around this area a lot. I guess he noticed your hut hadn’t been used for a while,” he smiles at me apologetically.

“Thank you,” I reply to him and nod a farewell before walking back to the others.

“Apparently a homeless man has been crashing here,” I explain to Rick when I get back.

“That explains a lot,” Rick nods, “but I guess that’s not the worst that could’ve happened.”

“I guess not,” I nod back carefully scanning the inside for evidence of anything other than beer, but luckily it doesn’t seem like whom ever has been inside of it, hasn’t used it as a toilet as well.

After Rick and I have brought the bags we carried inside, he walks back to the car to collect the others, while I stay at the hut and watch Anna plays around in the sand.

“I’m not sure how we’re going to sleep,” I mumble to Rick when he returns. In my memory the hut was a lot bigger, but it turns out there’s hardly any space at all. “That turns into a bed,” I say to him, pointing at the table. Brendan has kitted the beach hut out with a caravan style table and seats in the back, which can be folded down to a small double bed, so him and his wife could spent the night here before they had Mick, “but there isn’t much space for three people in here.”

“We’ll work something out,” he smiles, “if it comes to it, I don’t mind sleeping on the floor, while you and Anna take the bed.”

“Okay,” I mumble, I’d much rather sleep in the bed with him or even on the floor with him, but for some reason I can’t bring myself to say that.

“Rick?” Anna says, peeking her head inside, “I need the toilet.”

“Oh, eh, Summer?”

I smile at them both, “there are public toilets to the left, next to the last hut.”

“Okay. Come on you,” Rick says, walking outside to take Anna’s hand. I watch them leave and once they’re out of my sight I sigh and sit down on a chair, what has my life come to? Two days ago, the least of my worries was getting my editing done on time. Now I’m starting to get behind on schedule and I have much bigger worries.

I could easily get back to my normal life. I could leave Rick and Anna to fend for themselves, sell my car so no one can link it to me anymore, and just carry on as I did before, but for some reason I can’t. I can’t make myself to tell them to leave, I can’t make myself to see them suffer, and I don’t understand why. I hardly even know them. They’ve stormed into my life like a whirlwind, and frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Can I go into the sea now?” I hear Anna’s voice outside.

“You don’t know how to swim,” Rick replies.

“I won’t go far, I promise,” she begs him and I smile to myself when I hear him sigh loudly.

“I’ll come in with you,” I say to her, poking my head outside.

“Oh! Will you?” she cheers, “does that mean I can go in?” she asks again, looking up at Rick.

“Go on then,” he smiles at her, “but don’t go too far.”

We both roll up our leggings as far as we can get them up and race to the shoreline. Once we’re getting closer to the water I slow down and let her run in. She shrieks with delight as the water splashes up her ankles. “Come in!” she yells back at me. I brace myself for the coldness and cautiously take a step forward. It isn’t as cold as I was expecting and follow Anna out further into the sea. She wades in until the water reaches up to her knees, then comes running back when the next wave starts coming in. She waits on the shoreline for the wave to pass then runs back until the water crashes around her knees again and again starts running back to the shore when another wave starts coming her way. I watch her s squeal as she runs up and down.

“Do it with me!” she yells and I walk out until I’m standing next to her. The water only reaches up to halfway my calf. When the next wave starts coming she grasps my hand and starts pulling me back to shore and together we run until the wave have settled.

“That was so much fun!” she yells excitedly as we start making our way back to the hut, “we should do that again tomorrow.”

I laugh, “maybe tomorrow we can get Rick into the water.”

“Yes!” she shrieks, “he’ll like it too.”

When we get back to the hut, Rick is sitting on the front step, waiting for us with two towels in his hands. “Tomorrow you have to come in too!” she demands when he hands her a towel to dry her feet.

“I’ll think about it,” he chuckles.

Chapter 5

“What would you like to eat?” I ask the others as we walk over the promenade.

“Can we have another burger?” Anna asks, “I really liked the one we had the day before yesterday.”

“I’m sure we can find a place that do burgers,” I smile at her.

“What do you feel like?” I ask Rick.

“I’ll go wherever you want,” he replies with a smile.

“Burgers it is then.”

We find ourselves a little restaurant that does burgers. I order and pay inside and then the three of us sit down on the terrace outside overlooking the sea. After we’ve finished our food, we stay for a little bit longer to enjoy the peace and quiet with a cup of coffee and a hot chocolate for Anna.

Walking back to the beach hut we find most people have packed up their things and left for the day, making the beach almost deserted apart from two couples walking hand in hand along the shoreline. Rick must’ve seen me looking at them wishfully, because I suddenly feel his fingers gently touching the skin of my palm before he clasps his hand around mine. I look up at him in surprise and he shyly smiles back at me.

When we get to the hut Anna runs inside and sits down on the wooden floor with the bag of cars, I watch her for a moment until I realise something looks different.

“Did you make the bed?” I ask, turning to Rick.

“I did,” he smiles. “While you and Anna played in the sea I worked out how to lower the table in the middle and set it all up for tonight.”

“Thanks,” I give his hand a little squeeze and we sit down together on the step in front of the beach hut.

A sudden cold breeze comes rushing in from the sea and creates a shiver running through my body.

“Are you cold?” Rick asks when he notices me shudder.

“It’s getting a little chilly,” I say, pulling my legs up underneath me and wrapping my arms around them. I watch him get up and walk into the hut. Seconds later he comes back out with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders like a cape. He sits back down next to me and wraps his arm with the blanket around my shoulder.

“Is this better?” he asks.

“Mhm,” I nod, pulling the blanket tighter around my body and snuggling into it, “thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” he murmurs.

“Is Anna asleep already?” I ask him, suddenly realising there’s a distinct lack of noise coming from inside the beach hut.

“Like a baby,” he says, smiling brightly.

I lie my head down on his shoulder and watch the waves crashing into the shore under the starry sky.

“Did you grow up like Anna?” I ask him without looking up at him to see his reaction.

I can feel his body shake lightly as he shakes his head, “no, I had it a little easier, I went to school when I was young, until I dropped out at fourteen and started helping out at the market. When I was sixteen I convinced them to let me have my own stall with my own goods. Then when I was seventeen I got my second job at the bar, first only to clear tables and clean, and when I became legally old enough to serve drinks I started doing that as well.”

“Has your mom always been like this?” I ask him carefully.

“No,” he shakes his head again, “she wasn’t like this when she was still married to my dad.”

I move my head away from his shoulder to look up at him, “what happened?”

He looks back at me, sadness clearly visible on his face, “he left when I was just a little older than Anna. Mom says it’s because he was a lousy dad, but I know better.”

“What do you mean?”

“Mom has always been addicted to drugs, it was never this bad, but the addiction has always been there. When my dad was still around, he would take care of us, he’d go to work during the day, then made us dinner and clean when he’d come back. He supported mom, made sure she didn’t fall in with the wrong people, he’d keep her drug use to a minimum and made sure he dealt with the dealers.”

“Why did he leave?”

“Mom started using more than he was supplying to her, so she started going out during the day to get more, and when my dad refused to give her any more money for her drugs than he already did, she started sleeping with the dealers. He found out and left us.”

“When’s the last time you saw him?”

He lets out a deep sigh and stares out at the sea for a long time, “the last time I saw him was the day he walked out on us.”

“I can understand he wouldn’t want to see your mom again, but I can’t believe he wouldn’t come to see you,” I whisper softly.

“I don’t think he knows where I live,” he says, staring right at me, “when my parents split up, Mom moved us to that dump, and I doubt she told him.”

“Where’s Anna’s dad?”

Rick shrugs, “no one knows who Anna’s dad is.”

“That’s sad,” I whisper back. “Not even your mom?”

“I doubt it,” he replies, looking sad and a little disgusted. “She sleeps with any man that’ll come near her.”

I look at him and reflect his expression. “No offense, but that’s kind of gross.”

“Tell me about it,” he sighs.

“What about you?” I ask quietly, unable to look up at him.

“What about me what?” he asks.

“Well… you know… the drugs and that. Do you do any? Do you sleep around?” I carefully look up at his face, and instantly regret asking him. He looks at me in pure horror.

“I’m not sure what you think of me,” he grunts lightly, “but I’m nothing like my mother.”

“So… no drugs?”

He shakes his head. “When I was younger, I tried it. I found some of my mom’s weed and smoked it. But I didn’t particularly like it. And I’ve never tried any of the harder stuff that’ she’s using, I’ve seen what it does to her and I’m not willing to go down that route.”

“Good,” I smile at him. “What was the weed like though? Why did you try it?”

He shrugs, “everyone down our road uses it, and I mean everyone. I wanted to try it, I probably wanted to try and fit in, but it isn’t me and it made me feel a bit weird.”

Chapter 6

Suddenly he gets up, takes my hand in his and I let out a squeal as pulls me up unexpectedly.

“Where are we going?” I ask in shock.

“I thought we could go for a little walk along the water,” he smiles.

“But what about Anna?” I ask hesitantly, not wanting to leave her on her own.

“It’s fine,” he smiles, “we won’t go far, and if we leave the door open we can keep an eye on her.”

I grind my teeth for a moment. I don’t want to leave Anna on her own. What if she wakes up and goes out looking for us, or worse, what if the homeless man comes back and finds Anna inside, but I don’t want to pass this up. I take one quick glance inside cabin then look up at Rick and let him lead me to the sea. On the shoreline we both take our shoes off and pick them up to carry. We walk hand in hand through the wet sand and let the waves roll over our feet, taking turns to look back at the beach hut to make sure Anna is still inside.

“This is nice,” Rick says with a sigh. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had such a peaceful evening.”

“You mean ‘cause people always shout where you live?”

He chuckles in reply, “yeah, there is that, but it isn’t just at home. People shout at the market all day long, then the bar is always loud and busy and when I come home the surroundings aren’t much better. I’d almost forgotten what it’s like to hear nothing but silence.”

I listen to the loud crashing of the waves and wonder if he really considers this to be silence. “Mhm,” I nod, decided to agree with him. “It is peaceful.”

Suddenly he stops walking and turns to face me. “Thank you for everything Summer,” he whispers before his head slowly bends down towards mine and I close my eyes as his lips gently brush against my forehead.

“You’re welcome,” I whisper back and look up at him.

His face doesn’t move away from mine, instead he bends further down and presses his soft lips against mine. I moan softly in reply, feeling all the tension I have felt every time I’ve been around him build up and pouring out. I reach one of my hands up to the back of his neck, and tangle my fingers into his hair on the back of his skull, pulling him closer, wanting more of him. He mirrors my need and wraps an arm tightly around the small of my back, pulling me in, crashing his hips against my lower belly and kisses me with more urgency. As his hand finds the edge of my top, I feel his fingertips gently stroking my skin when he glides his hand underneath my shirt. With the palm of his hand he presses against my back and pushes me closely against him again, and this time I feel the bulge in his jeans that’s forming against my belly. A wave of excitement rushes through me and I can’t help myself, I unclasp my lips from his to quickly look down. When I look back up at him I see him blushing. “Too much?” he asks.

“Nu-huh,” I shake my head and grab the back of his head again to pull him back down. He reciprocates with even more urgency than before, pushing both his hands underneath my top and slowly pulling it up. I move away from him just long enough to let him take my top off over my head. His hands quickly find their way onto my shoulders and in a massaging movement he pushes the straps of my bra down my arms. When he unhooks the back of my bra and lets the silky fabric glide down my belly to the ground, the cool night breeze hits my nipples and instantly erects them. Rick looks at them with pure lust in his eyes and bending his head down, softly blows on them some more. The sensation rushes through my body and my clit throbs in response. I start tugging on his shirt and with fumbling fingers pull it over his head, while he slowly leads me to my knees and gently pushes me down onto the sand.

I always imagined my first time to be in my bed, or in the guy’s bed, but never in the sand. On a beach, in the open. I feel too exposed out here, like people are watching and they can come out of the shadows at any moment to watch us up close. This isn’t at all like what I imagined it to be, and I don’t think I can go through with it. At least not out here.

“I can’t do this,” I whisper to Rick.

“Did I do something wrong?” he asks, looking at me horrified.

“No,” I shake my head, “it isn’t you. I just… I can’t do it out here. I feel like people are watching, and the sand. It’s everywhere. It feels gross.”

“No one is watching,” he whispers, trying to sooth me as he strokes the hair out of my face.

“Still… I can’t do it out here.”

He looks at me with sad eyes, “okay,” he mumbles and nods as he gets off me, then his eyes widen in shock as I take him by the hand and leaving our clothes where they are, I start pulling him towards our beach hut where I lead him inside. I lie down on the flat single blow-up bed on the floor and pull him down with me.

“Are you crazy?” he chuckles quietly, “what if Anna wakes up?”

I shrug and smile at him cheekily, “we’ll just have to be quiet then,” I whisper. Carrying on where we left of, I let my hands glide over his toned abdominal muscles until I reach the top of his jeans. I unbutton him and pull his zipper down, but I can’t push his jeans out of my way from the position I’m lying in and I let out a soft grunt. He smiles at me in return, but instead of helping me, he sits up on his knees and pulls my leggings and thongs down my thighs and over my feet. He slowly lets himself drop down on the floor next to me again, and resting his head on one hand to look up at me, he slowly glides his fingertips in between my breasts, down my belly and onto my mound. My breath catches for a second while he glides one finger down my wet folds and I let out a gasp. A feeling of pure pleasure rushes through me, and he’s barely even touched me. As he strokes his finger up and down, I shudder with excitement. Suddenly he pushes his finger inside of me, and I gasp with surprise and delight. He rhythmically pushes his finger in and out and I can feel my body already starting to lose control, but when I feel myself about to melt under his touch, he takes his hands away and pushes himself back onto his knees. He quickly push his jeans and boxers down and I can see his eyes scanning my body from head to toe as he stands up to push his clothes all the way down, a lustful smile playing on his lips, his eyes lit up with pleasure.

As he lowers himself back down to the blow-up bed, he kneels down in between my legs, places a soft kiss on my belly before he grabs hold of his cock and ever so gently guides himself to my eagerly awaiting entrance. I let out a moan mixed with pleasure and pain when the tip pushes in and I feel him stretching me out. Once he’s completely filled me up, he gently pulls back before pushing himself fully back in again. As he picks up the pace, the pain starts to fade and I moan as I feel myself losing control again. My hands move up to his head and I grab onto his hair, tangling my fingers in his short locks and softly but urgently I pull on it, trying to get him to come to me. I need his lips on mine, not only to kiss him, but also desperate to keep myself from screaming out, and does as my tugging tells him to. He moves his head down and locks his lips onto mine. As soon as his lips touch mine, I can feel my insides about to explode. I close my eyes, buck my hips with his movements and moan into his mouth. The sounds I’m making are clearly spurring him on, as he suddenly starts thrusting a little harder and a little faster than he has been. It starts to hurt a little again, but sends me right over. It feels like electricity ripples through my body as all my nerve endings seem to explode. It doesn’t take long for him to follow suit, two more thrusts and he too lets out a deep moan, before collapsing on top of me.

His heartbeat is thumping so loudly, that I can almost feel it matching mine. I let out a deep breath, before gently pushing him to my side and pushing myself up on my elbow to have a quick glance over at where Anna is sleeping. It’s fairly dark and hard to see, but she doesn’t seem to be stirring.

“I think she’s still asleep,” I whisper to Rick with a sigh of relief.

“I think we should go to sleep too,” he whispers back at me while looks at me dreamily and strokes some hair out of my face. He rolls over to pick up a few blankets and spreads them out over us. Then wraps his arm around me and pulls me in close.
