Her heart leapt into her mouth as his tongue made contact between her legs, drawing slow circles around her pulsating clit as he teased her. She hadn't been ready for such a sensation, but there was no denying the pleasure and her noises began to fill the room.

The slowly building tempo drove her wild, her fists digging deep into the sheets as she searched for something to hold on to. When Jet slid a finger inside of her, she nearly lost it, her back arching far beyond its norm while she bucked and writhed under his touch. That combined with the slightly faster movement of his tongue was more than she could handle, sending Kailee over the edge.

Her first orgasm of the evening crashed over her, locking all her muscles as she quivered in place, unable to move as the waves of ecstasy lashed out from between her legs, igniting all of her nerves in sinful harmony. A cry filled with more emotion than she could comprehend tore from her throat as muscle control returned to her in a flash. Gasping for breath she pushed herself away from his touch, needing a moment to gather her wits.

Jet wasn't having any of it, however, climbing onto the bed, revealing to her that somehow during his actions he had managed to remove his underwear. His large cock hung between his legs, reigniting the fire between her own in an instant. She offered no resistance as he spread her legs, positioning himself to push inside of her. At that moment, he hesitated ever so slightly, looking to her for final permission.

With a smile, she wrapped her legs around his back, pulling him into her in one smooth motion. This time her cry was one of pain mixed with pleasure, for she had forgotten just how girthy he was. Her wet cunt stretched to fit him, wrapping itself around the hard-as-steel rod.

Several moments passed before he began to move, giving her time to adapt to his size. As Jet slid in and out, Kailee felt her eyes roll back into her head. It was sensation overload, her entire body losing control of itself as he increased his pace.

It didn't take long for his growls to mix with her moans. She could feel what was happening before his teeth sunk into her, claiming her for his mate in the height of passion. She cried out at the pain, gasping in shock. It fucking
hurt
.

Nobody had warned her of the pain that came along with the moment. They only spoke of the sheer ecstasy of knowing they were mated for life. It was as if someone's teeth puncturing their neck was nothing more than a love tap.

The pain faded quickly and, in a fit of desire and revenge, she sunk her own teeth into Jet's neck, claiming him in return. As soon as she did, the connection with him blossomed into something completely unexpected. At the periphery of her sensations, if she really concentrated, Kailee could feel his own emotions. The pleasure he derived from being inside her rushed through the newfound connection, causing both of them to erupt in mutual spontaneous climax's.

Perhaps this is what they meant by it being amazing.

Now Kailee could understand, for she had never felt so connected to someone before, nor had she ever climaxed so hard in her life. It was mind-numbingly good. She wondered idly if it would always be like that. Leaving the bed would be much harder than normal if she had such explosive sex to look forward to every day.

"I might never leave the bed if it's going to be like this," Jet commented dryly as if reading her mind. She laughed with joy and pulled him down closer to her so that she could steal some more of his body warmth.

"You're assuming I'm going to let you," she whispered into his ear before nibbling on it sharply. He cried out in mock pain and tried to pull away, but she pulled hard with her legs around his waist to keep him inside of her. Already she could feel him hardening.

"You're a machine," she commented, doing her best to squeeze herself tight around him, flexing her kegel muscles. She wasn't sure if it worked until his eyebrows shot up in surprise. With a small grin, she did it again, encouraging him to hurry up and return to form.

The return smile she got promised delightful agony in the best way possible. Closing her eyes, she pulled his face to hers, kissing her mate once again, but not for the last time that night.

Epilogue

It had been three weeks since the events at the Mill, and Jet was feeling comfortable with life once more.

Word had reached him anonymously that Jack had been placed into a mental institute far away from the Bluff's and Kailee, ensuring her safety. That was a huge weight off of his shoulders, for he had spent many a time worrying as to her safety if she wasn't within his sight. She was a grown adult and needed to live her own life, however, so he wasn't always able to keep a watchful eye on her. Jet may have claimed her as a mate, but he knew better than to try and rule over her life. He was smarter than that.

With that news breaking, he intended to formalize their plans for her to move in with him. His house was larger and in less need of repair, so it only made sense. It also had five bedrooms to her three, which would be perfect for the cubs they hoped to have. They hadn't verbalized it yet, but he knew she wanted to start a family soon.

The only thing was, he hadn't yet asked her to move in. It was what he wanted, and Jet was fairly certain it was what she wanted as well. That did not alleviate any of his nerves, however, especially as he pondered the other question he intended to ask her sometime in the coming weeks. He was simply waiting for the right moment to ask.

At the moment, the two of them were finishing up another late shift at work. Two days after her ordeal Kailee had bulled her way back into the bar. She had threatened, cajoled, ordered and finally shouldered her way past him. He hadn't wanted her to come back so soon, but she had claimed it was driving her crazy to sit at home and do nothing. Her winning argument had been devastatingly simple and effective.

"If I'm at work, you'll be able to keep me safer than if I'm home alone," she had told him the one day, beating aside his final resistance.

He glanced over at her once again, a smile blossoming on his face. The way she brushed away the few loose locks of her brown hair that kept falling into her face always caused him to grin.

"What is it Jet?" She smiled at him, radiating happiness without any of the earlier walls she had erected to fend him off. It was pure, unadulterated love that he was beaming back at him and it made his heart skip a beat.

"I want you to move in with me." There, he had said it, forcing the words out in what he hoped was a steady tone. Kailee stared at him, several emotions running across her face before one of determination settled into place.

"If you're serious, be serious," she said slowly, watching his every move.

Luckily he already had his hand in his pocket, so she wasn't able to guess what he had in mind. Taking a deep breath, holding his head high, he walked towards her.

"I love you, Kailee Britten. I intended to live my life out with you. I want you to move in, I want to have cubs with you, and most importantly, I want to call you my wife. Will you marry me?" He dropped to his knee in front of her at the last, pulling a small, velvet black box from his pocket and opening it to show her the ring inside.

She gasped in surprise, obviously not expecting things to move quite that fast, but like before, he had known this was what he wanted to do with her since the day they met. Now he finally had the chance to do it properly.

A tear welled up in her eye and although she was speechless, her headed moved fractionally up and down. There was no resistance as he took her left hand, sliding the ring on smoothly. It fit perfectly to his shock. He had estimated her ring size, doing his best to draw comparisons so the jeweller could attempt it. Jet filed a mental note to give him a tip the next time he was there, for it certainly made the moment perfect.

His heart began to calm, even as he grew excited at the prospect of their continued life together.

"To us," he toasted a few minutes later, after he had done as she commanded and kissed her hard.

They drank deeply, a smile plastered on both of their faces. Life was good, he thought.

Life was good.

Chase

Chase Hewitt looked around Moonlight Hall, wondering just why a small town had such a fancy hotel and event room. The answer was likely because shifters enjoyed a good party, and they tended to need the room. It made sense, for even at several inches over six feet, he was not the largest man in the room. Not even close.

There were several true giants present: a handful of Kodiak bear shifters who towered even above the grizzlies. Many of them were closer to seven feet in height than six. They tended to keep to themselves, however, so Chase felt no need to be threatened by their presence. Generally all species of shifters got along because the outside world would turn on them in a heartbeat if they knew, but there were exceptions.

"Generally," however, was not firm enough of a word for Chase to push his luck.

He marveled once again at the turnout for Jake and Harper's celebration gala. When the pack had arrived at Moonshine Canyon they had had an inkling that there was something special about the location, but it had taken a solid three months for them to realize that there were dozens, if not hundreds of shifters living in the nearby areas.

They did so right under the noses of locals, although many of them had clued in over time. When groups of shifters live in close proximity, sometimes there are just too many signs to hide it. Thankfully humanity as a whole would much rather believe that the concept of a shape shifter could never truly exist.

Yet despite the amount of shifters who had come for the wedding party, Chase was in a sour mood. All around him various couples whirled and twirled across the dance floor, moving in perfect rhythm and time with each other.

Soul mates.

Every shifter needed a mate, and the vast majority of them mated up at an early age. Very few shifters were single past their mid-thirties. There were a number of reasons, but fate usually dealt them a nice hand, so that families could be started young.

Jakes was almost thirty-five, and alone.

He had no mate, and in less than four months he would hit his thirty-fifth birthday. An entire host of unpleasant thoughts about that milestone entered his head, but he firmly brushed them away, unwilling to listen to his inner voice. It was never happy anymore, and today was supposed to be a joyous day. Despite that he had taken up position on the outskirts of the room, as far from contact with others as he could manage.

The one thing it did have was a great view of the entrance. The rectangular room had one entrance, a set of double doors at an angle in the northwest corner. Every guest either came or went from those doors. Chase was leaning up against a column near the rear of the room along the west wall, casually surveying the entire hall.

So when she walked in, he was the first one to see her.

His slouched-over lean vanished in a heartbeat as the curvy, auburn-haired beauty strode confidently into the room. Her hair bounced in its natural curls, falling midway down her back, leaving her face exposed for him to see. The stormy gray of her eyes called to him, promising a lifetime of daydreams as he stared into their murky abyss.

There wasn't an ounce of doubt or temerity about the newest guest to the party, despite her one major difference. Chase could tell right away from her stride that, despite it brimming with confidence, she was not a shifter. There were a few normals in the room tonight, but they were few and far between, and almost all of them were paired with a shifter.

She was alone and unafraid in a room full of predators. Nobody else had noticed her yet, but Chase knew it would only be a matter of time before someone picked up her scent and made a move. Knowing that it could get ugly, he began to walk toward her.

As the distance closed, it became obvious that the intruder was not as short as he initially had thought. In fact, she was well over average height, though still a handful of inches shorter than he. Chase was just beginning to imagine how she might feel pressed up against him, her head tucked against his neck, when something happened that surprised him yet again about this mystery woman.

Instead of waiting for a shifter to approach, as he was doing, she had taken stock of the room in front of her, and was now making a beeline for someone else. Chase cursed his earlier moodiness that had placed him in a part of the room that she would have had to crane her neck to truly see. Now he had likely lost her to someone else, because she went straight up to one of the bear shifters and began making conversation.

Chase was stronger than any normal human, but even that had its limits. It was why wolves ran with a pack, because together they were stronger. A single wolf shifter didn't stand a chance against a big bear. He was angry and lonely, not stupid, so giving up his pursuit before conflict began seemed to be the best idea.

"Damn," he muttered to himself, turning away, instinctively looking for the rest of his pack. They were spread out around the room, but everyone was there. Jake was at the center of a large knot of people, holding hands with Harper, whose other hand caressed her bulging stomach. She was several months pregnant now, and would give birth before the year was out.

Chase envied Jake and his newfound mate. They were utterly perfect together and it showed in everything they did. Even now, as Jake tired of talking to several of the sycophants who had turned out, Harper picked up on it and began to feign tiredness, wishing to go sit down alone.

He smiled as the two of them headed off to a corner for a private moment. That was what Chase wanted: that instinctive understanding shared through the bond that tied them together.

When a wolf claimed a woman as his mate, he formed a bond by sinking his fangs into her neck. Unlike the stories, it did not turn a human into a werewolf. As far as any shifter Chase knew, they were all born into it, a genetic tendency. It was a dominant one, which meant that any children Jake and Harper had would be shifters, despite Harper being human.

The pain of loneliness flared up as he watched them giggle and cuddle. Feeling as if he were invading their moment, he turned away. Although Chase had been one of the biggest proponents arguing in favor of the pack staying in Moonlight Canyon after Jake had mated with Harper, he was now beginning to have his doubts.

None of the others had found their mates, and none of them were getting any younger. He was the oldest of the pack, so perhaps he felt it most, but the clock was ticking down. If he didn't find a mate soon, he would have some very tough choices to make.

Unwilling to pursue that line of thought either, Chase decided it was time for some food. He started heading toward the food tables, realizing it would take him right past the curvaceous beauty. He couldn't help but admire her figure as he walked by. The black dress she had on fit her flawlessly, showing perfect amounts of her milky white skin and fabulously long legs.

The dress stopped above her knees, and, as he discovered, had nearly no back on it. The front displayed just the barest hint of cleavage before it wrapped around her neck in a seductive collar. He had never seen anything like it on a woman of her size. It seemed impossible that she would pull it off, but with her height it just seemed to work.

In fact, he told himself with a wry grin, it seemed to work a little too well. Chase's hand tightened harder onto the beer bottle he was holding, trying to force the blood away from his rapidly hardening cock. It would be unseemly of him to become aroused in the middle of all these people.

Yet no matter how he tried, the thought of her sent his heart racing, speeding the flow of blood from the rest of his body into his dick, hardening it to the point of pain. Thankfully, he noted, the tables were extra high, so that he could stand up against one for some time to hide himself, without causing a scene.

Besides, the odds were that the unknown woman was likely uninterested in someone of his age. She couldn't be more than thirty and was likely somewhere in her late twenties. Women of that age usually wanted someone a little younger than him.

Finally managing to get his wily wolf and its desires under control, Chase turned to move away from the food table. Kevin, Bryce, Ethan, and even Holden were all crowding in behind him. Various forms of dismay and mock distress were prevalent in the group. A raised eyebrow brought smiles and mild chagrin to their faces as he realized that they had been planning something.

"Okay, what is it?" He couldn't help but crack a smile at their antics. No matter how much he was frustrated by the situation, he knew that the other members of his pack would be there for him. Even Holden, the normally serious one of the six was playing along.

Perhaps he was broadcasting his mood more than he thought.

"Nothing at all my friend," Bryce practically crowed, throwing an arm around his shoulder. "Why, we were simply saying to ourselves how bored you look. So, we fixed you up with somebody."

"You what?" He was staring at them in shock. That wasn't normal practice with the group.

"Yeah, real babe actually," Ethan said nodding vigorously.

"You have no idea!" Kevin exclaimed while Holden nodded along.

He eyed the assembled group speculatively, as many doubts played through his mind at this scenario. It was so unlike them, which clearly meant that he should expect a punchline or prank any moment now. Not seeing any way out, however, he sighed and decided to play along.

"Okay, I'm listening."

"So was she, until we told her that you were a dude," Bryce replied before cracking up into a fit of laughter alongside the others.

"I take it this was one of those things where I had to be there?"

"Oh absolutely," Holden said, a large smile plastered on his face as he had a chuckle alongside them.

"Great lady, very funny, and beautiful too. She was here alone, so we said we had someone she should meet. She was all ears as we described you, but it wasn't until we pointed you out that she said she was into women."

"The look on her face when she saw you!" The boys dissolved into another fit of laughter, holding on to each other. This time even Chase joined in, wondering how someone could possibly mistake him for being a woman.

"Turns out all the time we had been describing you, we actually never said anything masculine. You poor bastard, you need to be more manly!" That was Ethan taunting him.

"Oh, I'll show you manly!" Chase jumped at him, quickly getting Ethan into a headlock as he took him to the ground. Using his free hand he quickly messed up the perfectly coiffed hair on Ethan's head, his pride and joy.

As his friend tried to fix it, Chase rose up, pumping both hands into the air in a mock victory dance. His friends all high-fived him, laughing at Ethan's misfortune. Sticking his hand out, Chase helped his rival back onto his feet before they exchanged good-natured hugs.

It was hard not to be happy around them, for the six of them had known each other for far too long. Even now Chase felt the earlier dark thoughts being banished as his mood improved.

Then, from behind, he heard the bear shifter politely tell the woman from earlier that he was uninterested in her attentions, and to please leave him and his comrades alone. Perhaps now would be a good time for him to make her acquaintance. He turned back toward the food table, telling his friends he'd catch up with them in a moment as they moved off.

Completing the turn he reached for another crabcake. They were delicious and he would have to watch how many he had or else he would get sick off of them.

Still, one more wouldn't hurt.
