Two weeks later

Four minutes. That’s how long the stupid thing took. My heart was racing and shit, was I sweating? Ugh, I was. I paced the small bathroom. Stupid!

Delaney, you can kill a big bad alpha werewolf, but this test has you freaking out.

Okay, I needed separation. I walked out of the bathroom and exited the bedroom. After everything had gone down with Mitch and his pack, the four of us went back to Troy's and, well, Reid, Monique, and I didn't leave. Troy said all the time how he needed his space, and we were up his ass, but he forgot I knew him. He loved having us there.

The pack had definitely been a harder subject. While the pack recognized that I killed the alpha, and they did submit to me, it wouldn't work. I wasn't a werewolf. I couldn't lead them. Reid, however, could. Especially after how they found Mark. Mitch hadn’t killed him. He had left him alive, but broken. Mitch had done unspeakable things to him, leaving behind a shell of a man. Reid grumbled about being a lone wolf, but I think, deep down, he needed a pack and felt he owed it to Mark. Monique was biding her time with us as we tried to devise a plan of attack on the Coven. This task was proving to be super easy. Okay, no, that was a lie; it was hard as fuck.

"Reid!" I called out. No answer. I was shaking with nervous energy.

I walked down the stairs and looked around for him. Nothing. Where was he?

“He and Troy went out. They said something about eggplant parmigiana.” It was Monique.

I frowned. My gaze slipped from her to the ceiling. My heart began to beat faster.

Calm down, Delaney!

"You okay?" she asked. Her tone was concerned, and she shifted nervously from one foot to the next.

I couldn't wait any longer.

"Yeah. Just need to go check something." I gave her a small smile and walked up the stairs. Each stair was a mountain. And dammit I was free climbing. One misstep and I felt like I would fall to my death. I walked into the bedroom and stopped just outside the bathroom door. My heart beat wildly, and I could hear the whoosh of blood rushing behind my ears. It was just a test. A little test. Would I be happy no matter what it said? I took a deep breath and reached for the knob when I felt a jabbing pain in my neck. Ouch, shit, what was that? I reached for the aching spot and felt wetness. I brought my hand up to examine the liquid and blinked at my hand, not understanding. Was it blood? Had I been hurt? I swayed, and the world started spinning.

I began a slow descent to the floor. Cool hands helped guide me down. Maybe I was just tired. That was it, I needed a nap.
Wait! No!
This wasn't right. I blinked, trying to clear my vision of fog.

Monique moved toward the bathroom door and stepped inside. She picked up the small test. Her mouth went into a hard white line. She tossed it in the toilet and flushed.
What did it say? Wait, what did what say?
The world began to pulse with each beat of my heart. She walked over to me and knelt. I didn’t understand, what had happened?

“What …” I tried to speak, but the word came out garbled and drugged.

“Did you really think I could betray my family?” Her words bounced around my fog-filled skull. I could do nothing but blink.

My world shrank. I was just tired. I just needed to nap. That was it, a nap. Then I would understand. I closed my eyes and distantly heard Monique’s voice.

“Goodnight, Delaney.” Then everything melted away into deep blackness …

Emily Cyr is a stay-at-home mom turned writer. She holds a degree in middle grades education with certification in English and social science. She has always had a love of all things paranormal and fantasy, but it wasn’t until Emily’s husband said the words, “Why not?” that she considered putting her thoughts and ideas into the book, The Lightning Prophecy. This trilogy was just the start for Emily. It seemed to open a creative door that had been locked.

Emily has always been an avid reader. Through reading came her love of writing. The more she read, the more she knew she wanted to create her own world. Many of her first works were fan fiction.

Emily and her family currently reside in Jacksonville, Florida. She has an incredibly supportive husband. They have two sons, ages 4 and 3. Somehow, even with the demands of being a parent to two little boys, she finds time to escape to her fantasies and write them down.

Currently, Emily has two urban fantasy series out, but stay tuned via her web-site,
