Prologue

Nikole Pride listened as her stepbrother talked down stairs in the house they now shared since her mother’s death. She looked around the room with its pink rosettes on the wall paper that matched the quilt her mother had made.  It hadn’t changed since she’d moved out eight years ago.  Nikole felt a pang of grief hit her with the force of a freight train and she stifled the keening cry that tried to escape her mouth.  This had been her home since she was six years old and now everything that made it home was gone.  Mama was gone

Nikole closed her eyes and tried to get control of the pain that threatened to steal her soul.  Mama was all she had in the world.  Of course she had friends, but she wasn’t the type to make close friends, not the kind that were together all the time.  She preferred her own company and that of her mother.  She had always known she could come home, but now she no longer had that either.

The house had belonged to Teddy’s father and Teddy had inherited after Nikole’s mother’s death six weeks ago.  Nikole had only come home to help care for her mother and handle the details of the funeral.  She had planned to move back to Kentucky where she worked as a dispatcher for the local sheriff, but Teddy kept delaying her.  He kept insisting that he needed her and she always relented, not wanting to alienate the only family she had left.

Teddy had been a cop for ten years and a good man. He was several years older than Nikole and had often treated her like a child, but he had also protected her more times than she could count and it was Teddy who had helped her get the job she now loved so greatly. Although they had never been close, they had shared a mutual respect in adulthood and had once been friends.  It had only been the last few months that Nikole had started seeing a darker side to him.  She felt sure he was doing something illegal and the arrival of the motorcycles early that morning had confirmed it.

Nikole heard Teddy shout and she sat up in her bed, pushing her dark curls away from her face.  She wanted to get dressed, but was afraid to make a sound that might draw their attention.

The men had argued and Nikole had heard several crashes before things grew quiet.  She feared for Teddy, but knew he was much better equipped to handle those men than she.  She stayed in her room with the door locked and didn’t make a sound, but the sound of footsteps in the hallway had her cringing in fear.

The sun was high in the sky when her door burst open and her life ended.

One

Lawless sat and listened to his brothers drone on and on about nothing important.  Their lives were becoming routine and that was dangerous.  They were waiting for Preach to show up and tell them what needed doing as they did every other Monday and Law was getting restless.  Nothing had happened in too long and that made his neck itch the way it did in prison when someone was about to stick a knife in his back.  That itch had saved his life too many times to count and he wasn’t about to discount it now.

He looked up and found Ace watching him with those dark brown eyes that seemed to see too much.  Ace reached up and scratched his neck and raised his brows.  Law nodded letting the man know he felt the unease too.

That made Law feel less on edge, at least one of his brothers felt the change in the atmosphere lately and was watching for trouble.  Law leaned back in his chair and watched his brothers talk and let his eyes drift around the room to the others who sat in the dim interior of the club.  Most were still drunk and already working on another bottle.  Some had girls bouncing on their laps and Law wanted to laugh at some of the women as they cut their eyes to each other and rolled their eyes.  These women were tougher than some of the men he called brothers and he found it funny and at the same time sickening.  Any woman who could roll her eyes while he fucked her wasn’t getting fucked hard enough.

Law brought his attention back to his brothers who sat around the small wooden table.  He looked at each one.  Every man here would give his life for the other, that was why they were trusted members, officers.

Moose sat in the chair and dwarfed it until it looked like a child’s chair, but he didn’t look awkward.  He looked big and tough and just as likely to rip your head off with his bare hands as not, but he had his soft side too as evidenced by the tiny footprint tattooed on his arm.

Spec, too smart to be a biker, but too mean to be a businessman.  He sat and pushed his glasses up his nose like a true nerd.  His clear blue eyes looked out with more intelligence than Law had ever seen in anyone in his life, but life had dealt him a bad hand.  He lived with no regard for life and he watched every one.  He wasn’t a killer, but he had maimed too many men to count.  Most of the brothers had fought with him at one time and learned quickly not to judge him by his appearance.  He could put any man on the ground crying like a baby within five minutes and he did it with little regret.

Ink wasn’t big and not brilliant, but he was loyal and he was careful.  He tended to think more than most of the brothers and he made fewer mistakes.  He believed in preparation more than the fucking boy scouts.  He was inked almost everywhere and pierced too.  His hair was jet black and blue on the ends.  He was the type of man women crossed the street to avoid, but he was never cruel and would go out of his way to help a woman or child, even if they were openly wary of him.

They were all looked at as outcasts and they seemed to like it just fine.  They were loyal and trusted and Law considered them family.

He looked up when Spec started talking.

Spec had gotten word that the Devils had made a comeback and were out for Defenders’ blood.  That was just fine with Law, it had been too long since they had spilled any blood worth talking about and he was thirsty.  It was then that he noticed the grim looks on his brother’s faces and knew they all felt the same unease.  Well good.

He let his eyes drift to the girls dancing lazily dancing on stage.  They weren’t putting on much of a show, practicing mostly, but they still drew the eye.  The strip joint, Tease, was club owned and the girls were too, but even that had become routine.

Law let his eyes fall to the women still putting on a show for his brothers and looking more bored than he felt.  Same ole stale women doing the same ole stale shit.  He thought the club needed some new blood.  That might be just what he needed to take the edge off his mood.  He let his eyes drift back to the stage.  Mace danced her usual routine, showing off her tits since that’s all she had to offer.  Some of the brothers couldn’t get enough of her, calling her feisty and fiery.  Law just found her loud and disrespectful.  His eyes jerked away from Mace to find one girl he hadn’t seen before and he frowned.  She was the first new face he had seen in Tease in six months and strange how his mind was just thinking of how he needed a change.

“Jack?  Who the fuck is that on stage with Mace?”  He called over his shoulder, never taking his eyes off the dark haired beauty standing with her arms crossed while she frowned at Mace making Mace laugh when she said something and shook her head.

The bartender stopped wiping the bar and looked to the stage.  “Name’s Nikki.  She’s new.  Rider hired her yesterday before he headed out to see Ginny.”  He shrugged.  “Looks good, can’t dance for shit.  May have to put her to waiting tables if she can’t figure it out, waste.”

Law let a calculating smile slip over his lips.  “She know the rules here?”  He scratched his stubbled chin in thought while he ran the ball in his tongue over his teeth.

“Mace was supposed to fill her in.”  Jack shrugged as if he couldn’t care less.  Law admired the man, most prospects almost pissed their pants when Law talked to them, but Jack didn’t cower.  Law bet he made brother within the year.  The man had balls.

Law nodded and stood.  He rubbed his hands together as he took his first step toward the stage.  Looked like life just got a little less boring.  He heard one of his brothers curse and another say something about the poor girl, but Law just wanted some fresh pussy and it had been too long since he let off any steam.  His brothers were getting as lazy as the weekend riders they all laughed about and it was making Law sick.  Only a few of the brothers held on to the memory of what happened the last time the Devils attacked and those made a point to stay ready.  Those were his brothers and they sat around the table he just left.  He passed another group of brothers seated closer to the stage.  The others just laid around drinking booze and screwing women.  It was enough to turn his stomach.

Lawless frowned as he passed the men who were supposed to have his back, he felt no trust in them and no loyalty to them.  He felt only contempt and he knew they felt the same.  Lawless was never a favorite among the brothers, most tolerated him out of fear.  He counted very few as friends worth taking a bullet for, very few.

He reached out and pinched Jazz’s nipple hard enough to have her squealing.

“That’s the first real sound I’ve heard out of you all morning Jazz, these fuckers boring you?”

Jazz looked up with her big brown eyes and opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out.

“Law, you son of a bitch!  Keep your hands off my woman.”  Shank spat as his face turned red.

Law laughed.  “Your woman?  You claimin’ Jazz?”

“Fuck you.  She’s mine as long as my dick is in her pussy.”  Shank snarled.

Law nodded.  “Might want to remind her it still is, she’s looking pretty bored to me.”

Jazz’s eyes widened with fear but Law just winked.  If she’d been disrespecting one of his real brothers by rolling her eyes while he fucked her then she might need that fear, but hell this was Shank.

“When he finishes up, find a man who can fuck you until you scream for real…Jack looks like he could do the job.”

Shank stood, dumping Jaz into the floor.  She looked almost relieved as she took the opportunity to escape.  Law just raised his brows and laughed.

“Sit the fuck down Shank.  We both know I’d gut you without breaking a sweat.”  Law just walked away, leaving Shank boasting and tucking his dick back in his pants.

Lawless really would like to gut the wormy little bastard.  He pushed the thought aside.  He was restless, that’s all this was, and maybe he could work it out with this new girl.  He let a cruel smile curl his lips, just maybe.

Nikole looked up when Mace stopped dancing beside her and grabbed her arm.  She looked over to find the tall red head staring into the darkened club.  She looked almost scared under her false smile and hooded eyes.

“Keep smilin’ Nikki.  That’s Lawless heading this way, not my choice for your first Defender, but not much I can do about it now that he has you in his sights.”  She turned her face toward Nikole, but never took her eyes off the man heading in their direction like a lion stalking a gazelle.  “The new girls are off limits to all except the officers, for the first few weeks...”  She trailed off as if that explained something.  “You know about upstairs?”  She began to move seductively against the pole again.

Nikole nodded.  There were rooms upstairs where the girls were paid extra to give private lap dances.  Her brother had told her about that and made her practice on the men he now called friends.  He assured her that the men weren’t allowed to touch her, but the act still disgusted her.

“Well the Defenders don’t have to pay and they get anything they want and you’d damned well better make them enjoy it or you’re out, or you’re dead.”  She squeezed Nikole’s arm.  “Just do as you’re told.  Most don’t want to hurt you really, they are just big rough men who like to fuck just as rough.”

Nikole paled.  Did Mace mean she would have to have sex with any of those bikers that took a notion to take her up those stairs?  From the look on her face the answer was yes.

“I can’t have sex with him Mace.”  She whispered.  Her stepbrother and his friends had been adamant about that.  Said she belonged to them, whatever that meant, but there was no way she was letting some strange man screw her in a club.

“That’s Lawless.  You can’t say no and he always takes us upstairs.”  Nikki saw a tall Asian looking woman just off stage make a gagging face at Mace and roll her eyes.  Nikole thought her name was Jazz.  Mace stifled a giggle.  Jazz just finished fucking Shank right out there and he is one slimy bastard, we all hate him.”  She held up her pinkie finger and wiggled it.  Nikole’s eyes widened as she realized what the woman meant and then she giggled too.

She squinted and looked out into the club.  “Which one is he?”

Mace did laugh then.  “You need to worry about Lawless right now.”  She sighed.  Any other brother might cut you some slack, but…”  Mace trailed off.  “Maybe he will take me,” she said almost thoughtfully, “but I don’t think so.  Just let him have what he wants and make the right noises and it will be over soon.”  She paused and swallowed hard.  “He isn’t bad, but it’s just straight sex and nothing else.  That man doesn’t have any feelings at all so don’t expect anything from him.  He won’t touch you and he won’t kiss you and he don’t want you to touch him either.”  Mace squeezed her hand.  “Just get through it, the first time is always the hardest.”

Mace smiled flirtatiously when the man stepped closer.  Nikole felt frozen.  She wanted to run now that she could see him better.  His brow was pierced three times and somehow those silver rings made his eyes look even colder.  His blonde hair was cropped close to his head and there was a tattoo on his arm that looked like something slithering in and out of his skin.  The flesh looked ragged and raw where the creature penetrated the skin.  He caught her looking and turned his hand to show a snake ready to strike on his wrist.  She jumped and she could see her reaction pleased him.  She frowned and crossed her arms before she remembered she was supposed to be docile.

She could not be alone with this man.

“Hi there Law honey.  What can I do for you handsome?”  Mace wrapped her leg around the pole and leaned back, giving Law a good look at what she was offering.

“Not a damned thing Mace.  Who’s the girl?”  He nodded toward Nikole.

His voice was flat and cold and Nikole was instantly terrified.  She couldn’t go up those stairs with this man, but she didn’t have the words to refuse him. Mace elbowed her hard.

“This is Nikki.  She’s new.”  Mace popped a bubble with the gum she always seemed to have.

Lawless nodded.  “I could go for some new.”

Nikole felt his eyes crawling over her body and felt the tiny hairs on her skin stand up as goose bumps ran over her.

“Aww but what’s wrong with a little familiar?  You know I always please you Law honey.”  Mace said playfully.  “Don’t I always treat you right?”  She batted her eyes and offered a pout that even Nikole almost believed.

“Cut the shit Mace.  You hate when I fuck you almost as much as I hate fucking you.  You are a pussy on legs with a nice pair of tits and that’s all so cut the shit.  I want a piece of ass and I don’t want you.”  Law wanted to strangle Mace every time she opened her mouth.  Why couldn’t she just shut the fuck up?  Her voice was like nails on a chalkboard and that damned gum pissed him off.

His eyes slid to Nikole and her heart hit her stomach.

“Get your ass upstairs.”  He knew his voice was harsh, but Mace always pissed him off just by being in the room and she knew it all too well.  This new girl though, she had a different look from all the others.  Her tits were big enough, but not the normal oversized tits of the strippers here.  She was short too and Law admitted he liked that too, made her look like a normal woman instead of the whore she was.  Her eyes though, he didn’t like looking in her eyes.  Something there made him feel like he should be ashamed of something and it just pissed him off.  They were too wide and too damned green.  She looked innocent and he hated it.

Nikole stepped from the stage on shaking legs and walked toward the stairs as if she were walking to the gallows.  She had no choice.  What this man would do to her couldn’t be any worse than what her stepbrother would do if she failed.
