“Speaking.” If nothing else her time with Joseph had
given her much better phone manners.

“Kassie, this is Doris Beckworth , your admissions
counselor from Valley Village College.”

The call stunned Kassie. She didn’t know what to say,
luckily Doris continue on without a response from Kassie.

“I have good news for you, Kassie. Due to changing
enrollment structures and other factors, instead of being wait listed for the
year, we have a spot open for you starting in January. What do you say?”

Kassie could hear Mrs. Beckworth beaming on the other end
of the line.

“Why, thank you. This is…unexpected and, wow, exciting. I
don’t know what to say.”

“Just say yes,” she chirped, “and I’ll prepare the
paperwork and send it to you.”

Kassie licked her lips and considered her words
carefully. She shifted her phone to her other hand and slipped her free fingers
inside her shirt, smoothly unhooking the flap of her maternity bra. Her anxiety
about starting college early and unexpectedly flowed away as she pinched her
nipple and extracted a few drops of milk. “I want to thank you, Mrs. Beckworth,
but I’m in the middle of an internship and I don’t know if I can just leave in
the middle of it.”

“Of course you can. I’m sure your employer will
understand. What you learn at college is much more important than anything you
can get at an internship arranged by your high school.”

Kassie pinched her nipple harder and winced at the pain.
“Be that as it may, Mrs. Beckworth,” she said angrily, primly, “I’ve made a
commitment. I’ll still start next year, next fall, but for now I am glad to
stay where I am.”

The sigh was audible over the phone. “It’s your choice
then.”

“Thank you,” Kassie said and disconnected the call.

She reached inside her shirt with her other hand and
pinched her free nipple until milk was flowing from both her breasts to match
the tears rolling down her cheeks.
