I would like to acknowledge the contributions of these good (great, wonderful …) people, who have all contributed so much to this book, and in some cases many others:

  • Kate and the HarperCollins team for standing by this series and giving it time and room to grow
  • Liz and the Family Stone for being super editors and knowing how many masts a barque has
  • Paul Moon of Auckland University of Technology for his guidance and insights into the personalities of early New Zealand
  • the staff at the Treaty House in Waitangi, especially Barbara Brown, aka ‘Mrs Busby', for all the many things I learned about one of New Zealand's national treasures
  • Arama for his usual insightful critique and encouragement
  • my children, Brendan and Melissa, for their support and enthusiasm
  • and most of all Kerry, my wonderful wife, for patiently reading and re-reading the drafts, and red-inking the boring bits.
