Most of this book was written at the San Francisco Writer’s Grotto, and thanks to all the supportive geniuses who work there, particularly Caroline Paul, for that unparalleled environment. Residencies at the Mesa Refuge were invaluable in writing both of my books. I’m also much obliged for the hospitality of Ken Fulk and his Durham Ranch, Don Hazen, and Jon Pult of the inimitable Sugar Shack.

A final and repeated thanks to the experts and sources, listed in the bibliography, whom Sydney Brownstone and I harangued over months and in some cases years while trying to get the details right.

And another to my magnificent husband, who is my joy and my universe.

I am lucky in countless ways, but one of them is to have been able to go through the process I did—and to share it. So thank you.
