IN THE BEGINNING,
following the path of Stanley and Livingstone seemed a simple project. But over time, as it became clear through research that the story was not just about two men in Africa but about a worldwide series of events, I came to depend on a small army of friends and associates to help me access all the necessary resources. This book could not have been written without them.

In New York, I owe a huge debt to two very important individuals. The first is my incomparable editor, Jason Kaufman, for his vision, patience and perseverance. Jason, you’re a genius. I salute you.
