She enjoyed the feel of his arms holding her, but that felt different too. “James…”
He pulled back and she saw the tears. Her eyebrows came together. “Why are you crying? What the hell happened to me?”
“You almost died, Ally.”
She gasped. “The last thing I remember is Kat—”
“She saved your life. You were right about her.”
The happiness shone through her eyes and she threw herself into his arms again. “Is she away from Vincent now?”
“Yes, she is.”
“You have to tell me everything,” she demanded.
James nodded. “I will, but first there is something I need to tell you.”
“What is it?” she asked, her voice rising.
“Do you feel any different?”
She pinned him with a questioning stare. “I do, and when I woke up, it was so strange. I heard voices in my head from all over the house. If I didn’t know better…” She stopped before finishing the sentence and stared at him with wide eyes. “James, am I an immortal?”
“Yes. Well at least, you seem to be.”
“What’s that supposed to be mean?”
James explained his fears about what might have happened and she listened intently.
“Not a chance,” she said when he’d finished. “There’s way too much immortal in you for that to happen.”
He laughed softly. “How do you feel?”
“Different, but good,” she replied testing out her new body. In the few moments since she’d woken up the heaviness had gone and now she felt like she was capable of doing anything.
“You’re breathtaking, Ally,” he said with pride. “More beautiful than I ever would have imagined possible.”
Ally beamed at him and ran to the bathroom to have a look at her new self.
She gasped when she saw the reflection staring back at her. Gone was the human, and in her place stood Alessandra the immortal.
The eyes looking back at her were a shade brighter, and her lips looked red and bee stung. She touched them in wonder. Her hands moved up to touch her cheekbones that had become more defined. A ray of sun shone in her hair through the window, highlighting the subtle red streaks that were now there.
James stood behind her and put his hands on her shoulders. “See what I mean?”
She touched her face again, stunned and unable to believe her own eyes. She fluttered her eyelashes and was convinced they were even longer and thicker than they had been.
“Not to sound vain,” she said with a smile. “But I think I like the new immortal me.”
James laughed.
“I think my chest has even gone up a size!” she cried with delight.
The blissful happiness James felt radiated out of him like his very own sun.
She turned around so quickly that she almost made herself dizzy. “Woah,” she said. “Guess I’ll get used to that.”
“By the end of the day it will be second nature to you.”
“Is Chase alright? He came with me last night…or has it been longer?”
“No, it was last night. And yes, he’s fine. A little worse for wear, but fine.”
She nodded.
“Come on, let’s go downstairs,” he said pulling her along gently. “Tristan gave us the information he promised you and we’re about to reveal it to everyone.”
Ally hurried down the stairs and into the lounge room eager to see everyone and to hear the names.
She was met with a chorus of people talking to her and everyone wanting to hug her.
“I should nearly die more often,” she said with a look back at James.
“No, you shouldn’t.”
Adele grabbed her from the sea of well-wishers and pulled her into her arms. “You gave me a fright, miss!”
“Sorry,” she said sheepishly. “But I rescued Kat…well, kind of.”
“I know, sweetie.”
“And I believe I also got the names in the process.”
“And I nearly died, too,” Chase called out.
She turned around and gave him a hug. “Thanks for almost dying to protect me.”
“Any time, lass,” he said with a smirk.
“Now,” she said to the group. “Will somebody please tell me what I missed and what the information from Tristan told us?”
James explained the events of last night to her as she sat there in horror at what had happened to her.
“So that didn’t go as I planned at all.”
“No, it didn’t,” James said with a light scold.
“So the names…”
“Isabella and Caleb are on the list,” James started. “And another name we don’t recognise that we will have to track down. But the last two names on the list took us by a surprise. We know them both.”
Ally scrunched her eyebrows together, and the room took on an expectant hush.
“Well,” Ally said. “Who are they?”
“Kat is the vampire, and the human is none other than our Mackenzie.”
Ally stared at Mackenzie with wide eyes and an open mouth. “What?”
Sophie and Henry gasped in surprise, and Sophie put her arm around her daughter. “How is it possible?” she whispered. “A human doesn’t stand a chance against a vampire!”
Damian stepped forward. “The prophecy doesn’t say they have to be human at the time of the battle. Just that they would be human to begin with.”
“You want to make me an immortal,” Mackenzie said in disbelief. The poor girl was so overcome, she just looked dazed.
Chase sat beside her and took her hand. “No one is going to hurt you, my love.” She looked at him and the fear in her eyes made him flinch. But he continued on, “We are soulmates remember, and if we want to be together forever then it would have had to happen eventually.”
She shook her head. “I hadn’t even thought about it, Chase.”
“No one is pushing you into anything or forcing you to make a decision right now. It’s just something to think about,” he reassured.
Mackenzie nodded again in her surprised stupor. “I’ll think about it.”
James took Ally to one side. “Wanna get out of here?”
“I’d love to,” she said smiling up at her love. “Maybe we can visit that little tree?”
“Sounds like a plan to me. We can test out this new body of yours. I think you’ll love running!”
Ally raced out the door ahead of him. She was fast, but he was faster.
They ran and ran until the waterfall came into view. Ally walked over to the boulder and perched herself on it, staring at the little tree.
James’ voice interrupted her reverie. “There’s some things that I need to say to you, but first there’s two people here who really want to talk to you.”
Ally cocked her head to the side. “Who?”
“Kat and Tristan.”
Ally face lit up in a happy grin. “How did they know we were here?”
“Our scent,” he said, then looked over his shoulder. “Come on down, you two.”
Ally’s body tensed and a cold sweat broke out across her body.
“It’s alright, my love,” he whispered and laid a hand on her knee before they were in earshot.
She watched as her red haired friend came towards them, with her vampire soulmate in tow. She couldn’t tear her eyes away from Kat. She’d changed so much since she last saw her, and there was a happiness and calm vibrating off her that hadn’t been there before.
They stood facing each other, neither able to find the words.
“Let’s give the girls a moment,” James whispered to Tristan and nodded his head in the other direction. “I believe you have some information about vampires that I might find interesting…”
Tristan cocked an eyebrow at James, but followed him to share his information.
The girls watched them walk away, then Kat sat next to Ally on the boulder. “Well,” she said.
“This isn’t awkward at all,” Ally said jokingly.
Kat smiled wistfully. “I’ve missed that.”
“What?”
“Your sense of humour…and just you in general.”
“I’ve missed you too, Kat.”
“It seems like we solved your mystery and got more than we ever bargained for!”
Ally sighed. “The masquerade ball seems like years ago now.”
“Tell me about it!” Kat said ruefully. “There’s so many things I want to say to you, but the most important one is thank you. I’ve been told that you never gave up on me and I’ll never be able to tell you how much that means to me.”
“You would’ve done the same thing for me,” Ally said. “I’ve felt responsible for you getting mixed up in all this.”
“Oh Ally, please don’t feel that way. It was meant to happen. I’m part of the prophecy remember?”
“We’ll if there’s any vampire I want on my side, it’s you.”
Kat laughed. “I’ve still got a long way to go, but I never want to be a monster.”
“You won’t be, and we will all help in any way we can.”
“Thank you,” Kat said. “I’m surprised they haven’t killed each other yet.”
Ally looked over at the vampire and immortal chatting amiably and her eyebrows raised. “Makes two of us. James must be mellowing.”
Kat laughed. “We’ll leave you two here for a while and meet you two back at the manor later?”
“We’d love that,” Ally said.
Kat jumped off the boulder and waved bye. She grabbed Tristan and they ran over the hill together and out of sight.
James sauntered back over and kissed Ally.
“Are you happy, my love?”
“Ecstatically!” she replied. “I’m engaged to the most handsome man in the world, my best friend is alive and well, actually undead and well, and we have all but one of the elder councils. For the first time since this all started I actually have real hope that we can win this thing.”
“Of course there is hope. You can do anything you set your mind to Ally. And as I said back at the island, death didn’t stand a chance against you, and I was right. My little fighter.”
“So there were some things you wanted to tell me?”
“I wanted to apologise for the way I acted when I found out who my father was. I should never have shut you out and run off like that.”
“It’s to be expected, James. I don’t blame you.”
“Regardless, I shouldn’t have done it and I should never have said that you shouldn’t have told me. You did the right thing, little one, and I thank you for that.”
“Are you feeling a little better about it now?”
“When we found you, and you were all but dead, I realised that it didn’t matter. You are all that matters to me. And you were right about what you said, I am my own man and I don’t resemble him at all, nor am I likely too.”
“It makes me happy that you think like that now.”
“I mean it, my love. Nothing else means more to me than you, and I will spend forever trying to show you that.”
“I already know, James…I already know.”
She kissed him and poured every ounce of love she felt into it. He answered her with a growl.
He pulled back. “I love you, my prophecy girl.”
“I love you too, my protector.”
“By the way, do you remember what I told you about the Caoineag?”
Ally nodded.
“The legend is true. I came here when I left the manor, and I heard a spine-chilling wailing ring out from the bottom of the waterfall. I couldn’t see her, but I knew what it was. She even got me with her washing!”
Ally looked at him, enraptured.
“There was only one reason why she was there wailing, so I ran back home as fast as I could and discovered you were missing and the fireballs led me to Chase.”
She shuddered and goose bumps ran all over her body. “I can’t believe you heard her! What else is out there that we think is just a myth…”
“Who knows, Ally…who knows. But something tells me we’ll find out before the battle is done.”
