“You shouldn’t have brought Buffy.” The young vamp proclaimed to Dustin. “Dying in front of a girl is really embarrassing.” The vamp boasted.

“Only non-person dying tonight is you. You fanged out motherfucker.” Dustin vigorously spit.

The young vamp grinned. He reached into the small of his back and retrieved a 9mm handgun. As soon as Scar saw the gun she froze. What the fuck was a vamp doing with a gun?

The vampire pointed the gun at Dustin. He shot Dustin three times in the chest before Dustin could get close enough to use his katana. Dustin’s body dropped to the floor. He was dead.

BLAM! Scar fired her shotgun at the vampire striking him in the chest.

The vamp stumbled back but didn’t fall. The double barrel ripped two gaping holes in his puny vamp torso. Rage filled Scar’s fingers. He had shot Dustin and soon Dorian would pay with his already dead life.

BLAM! Scar fired again. Two more holes but it would never be enough. Guns couldn’t kill a vampire but they sure could hurt them and slow them down while a hunter came up with a plan B. It helped that the bullets had been soaked in holy water.

The vamp recovered quickly. He rushed toward Scar. He slammed into her five feet five inch frame knocking the shotgun from her hands. Dorian landed on top of Scar pinning her down on the floor.

He’s going to turn me Scar thought. That was worse than death. Worse than getting your throat ripped out.

Dorian covered her body with the weight of his. Dorian sensually rubbed the tip of his nose against Scar’s neck as she squirmed to break free.

“I can’t kill you. You’re not next... I’m going to have to let you go...” He smiled with perfect white teeth and fangs. “How ‘bout we have a little fun first.”

The vamp breathed in Scar’s feminine aroma, her human scent, the most delightful scent to a vampire.

“Get off me!” Scar yelled knowing there was no way a vamp would pass up the blood of a hunter.

“You smell like AB positive wrapped in milk chocolate. So damn yummy.” The young vamp took one of his hands and groped her thigh. Scar couldn’t believe he was touching her. Vampires crave blood more than sex and he was molesting her. He was even making chocolate jokes because she was black.

“You smell like a dead man.” Scar countered with the truth. She was unfazed by his roaming cold dead hands.

“Oh do I now?”

Scar used her free hand to stab the vampire with a syringe filled with white wolf’s blood, the only tranquillizer for the undead.

“White wolf’s blood, pervert.” Scar used her secret weapon to render the vamp powerless.

His body went limp. Scar pushed Dorian offof her. She stood, walked a few steps and grabbed Dustin’s katana off the dusty floor. She couldn’t believe Dustin was dead but she had to buck up. There was no way she was going to die too.

Scar walked back over to the frightened and paralyzed vampire. He was frozen on the dirty floor. His red eyes were glaring up at her and jetting around all wild and crazy. He was terrified and she knew why. Scar bent down on one knee.

“What’s your name again vamp? I forget.”

He looked up at her. He tried but he could barely speak. “Do-ri-an.”

“So Dorian, what would Buffy do?”

Scar held the katana high above her head. The clean blade shimmered in the dull light of the moon that pierced a nearby broken window. Scar swooped down with the blade slicing vampire Dorian’s head clean off. The severed head rolled on the ground and stopped in the center of the floor.

This was all in a days work. But this workday was a bust, one dead hunter and one dead vampire. This was a bad day, a terrible day, a day of loss.

There was no time to mourn. She had to get herself out of there before the other vamps showed up.

Scar always checked the pockets of her kills. Dorian was no exception. She ignored the black blood seeping from his headless body. Sometimes vamps kept their wallets from when they were humans. The info in the wallets could sometimes lead her to more vampires.

She reached into his pockets and removed the dollar bills, loose change and pieces of paper. There was no wallet. She grabbed her double barrel shotgun, Dorian’s 9mm handgun and ran down the stairs hoping and praying she wouldn’t run into any of Dorian’s buddies.

Scar was a survivor. She had escaped many vampire attacks. She hated that Dustin had to die but she had lost a lot of partners over her eleven-year hunter career. She had to admit it was a tough job but someone had to do it and she was woman and man enough to fit that huge bill. Someone had to protect the unknowing public. Someone had to make the streets safe from monsters.

Scar asked the vamps name just because she wanted to try to keep a record of all the vampire’s she had killed. This was vampire number one hundred and twenty-three. She was proud of her vamp kill status. Hunting vamps was her job and she was really good at it.

It was time to move on, time to be strong, time to figure out what was going on with these vamps.

CHAPTER 2

A decade old black Range Rover pulled up and parked on the dusty dirt path in front of a modest cabin somewhere out in the middle of nowhere.

The Fox brothers were back in Lincoln Nebraska. They were visiting with their Uncle Donny. This place held fond memories for the brothers. They spent a lot of time here in their youth. That was when they were unaware of all the monsters lurking in the shadows.

Max Fox was thirty-three and the typical older overprotective brother. He was rough around the edges and the edges were razor sharp. He was handsome in a ragged way and his hazel eyes and dirty blonde hair seemed to always have a woman or two or five taking notice.

Max and his brother Ryan Fox exited the truck and walked up the porch steps. Max’s brother Ryan was twenty-nine and a baby-faced deep thinking man. This was always conveyed in his constant grimace. He was just as handsome as his brother Max but he was two inches taller at six feet four inches. Ryan’s hair was brown and a bit thicker than his brother. He was always a little bit more disheveled than Max.

Their eyes were the same color but Ryan always had a gleam of worry behind his orbs.

The screen door of their uncle’s place was unlocked. The main door was wide open. They entered the screen door and walked into the kitchen to greet their favorite and only Uncle Donny.

Uncle Donny Fox was a fifty something bearded man. He was just a little plump in places due to his excessive love of beer and whiskey but he was still pretty fit. He always wore a baseball cap, odd because he had all his hair for an older man.

Uncle Donny stood near the kitchen sink. He didn’t flinch when he heard his screen door open. He expected his nephews to come when he called them. He called on them pretty often.

The vampire hunter Scar sat at a wooden table in Uncle Donny’s kitchen. She cupped a warm coffee mug with both hands. She had drove a long time to get here and she was spooked by what the young vampire Dorian had told her. She decided to come to Nebraska. She was here to give Donny the lowdown and that’s what she had done before the Fox brothers arrived.

Scar didn’t usually ask for help but she knew this wasn’t your regular vampire track and kill. This was something different. She needed the help of an old school master hunter like Donny. Sure Donny was sort of retired but he gave orders to other hunters and helped any fool brave enough to get in this life. He was like a vampire hunter sensei. He was just the man Scar needed to see her way clear of this confusion.

Max was mildly surprised when he walked into Uncle Donny’s kitchen with his brother. He had never run into a woman at Uncle Donny’s. This woman was a tad bit young for his uncle but Max was very impressed that his old uncle could get such a hot woman. Scar was a looker and Max was going to get in as many looks as possible.

“You have a visitor.” Max pointed out the obvious.

“Fellas, this is Scar Buckley. She’s in the life.”

“Oh.” Max raised both eyebrows. “I’m Max and this is my brother--”

“Ryan Fox. I know who you are. Every vampire hunter’s heard of you two, the vampire’s favorite playmates.”

Max grinned. He thought it was a compliment. “Yes and I’m playmate of the year.” Max boastfully proclaimed. He was the cocky brother and proud of it.

Ryan frowned at Max’s joke. He was not amused with Max’s antics. Sometimes he wished his brother took things more serious.

“Simmer down Mr. December.” Uncle Donny chimed in. They all had business to discuss.

“You’re pretty famous yourself Scar.” Ryan smiled as he acknowledged Scar.

Max was lost as usual. He was the self-absorbed one of the brothers. “She is?”

Ryan rolled his eyes at his brother. “Max this is Scar, the hunter with the highest number of vamp kills last year.”

“Higher than us? Higher than me? Geez, you’re a legend. I, we thought you were a dude.”

“I’m not, a dude.” Scar curtly said. She wasn’t sure if that was a compliment or not. She did know that Max talked a lot. She wasn’t sure if she thought it was cute or annoying. Only time would tell.

“Yes ma’am, you definitely are not.” Max was flirting. His second favorite thing to do after killing vamps.

Ryan was all business when it came to women. He had a few in the past but the life of a hunter wasn’t ideal for relationships.

“What brings you into town? Are you hunting something big?” Ryan asked. He knew Scar wasn’t here to visit with his uncle.

“Big yes, as big as it gets. This one I can’t handle alone.” Donny and Scar shared a grim look. This made Ryan feel a bit uneasy. He worried a lot and this is just one more thing to concern himself with.

“Listen boys I got a case for you.”

“C’mon Uncle do we really have time for this? We’re hunting Drack.” Max shared their present agenda.

“Look here son, you’re going to have to make time. Scar, please fill our centerfold in on the job.”

“I drove here from Arizona. I was on a job with another hunter, Dustin Dixon.

“Yeah we know Dustin.” Ryan said. He was now eager to hear more. Dustin was an old friend. He had even worked a few jobs with Dustin.

Scar continued. “We were in Phoenix chasing a gang of vamps. We ran into a young vamp named Dorian.”

“Dorian, huh I never heard of him.” Ryan said.

“Well this Dorian shot and killed Dustin.”

Max’s face went into an instant frown. “With a gun?”

“No with a text message.” Scar sarcastically replied.

This caught Ryan’s interest. “When did vamps start using guns?”

Scar decided to give Ryan all her attention. She had figured out he was the smart one of the brothers and Max was the good-looking one. Well at least that’s what she thought. “Surprised me too. Well this vamp shot Dustin right before I Ann Boelyned him.”

Max noticed that Ryan was getting Scar’s attention. He couldn’t have that.

“I’m sorry about your pal but what’s this got to do with us?” Max was harsh and abrasive and he didn’t have a problem with it. His mind wasn’t on some unknown vampire with some unknown vampire gang. Max and Ryan only went after the big game. Possums were for low-level hunters. Saber-toothed tigers were the Fox brother’s game.

“Max please, shut your trap and let the lady talk.”

Ryan chuckled. He loved when Uncle Donny put Max in his place, which was more often than not.

“The vamp I sliced had a list of ten hunters.”

“Ten hunters?” Max inquired. This was starting to interest him.

“Yes, ten of the best hunters that his nest were going to kill.”

“Vamps killing hunters. Right whatever.” Max chuckled.

“I took the list off his headless body.”

“Vamps coming after hunters?” Ryan couldn’t believe his ears. Vampires hid from hunters. That’s how it’s always been.

“Yeah. The list was a countdown. They had already crossed out ten through five. My partner Dustin was kill number four.”

Ryan did the math. “So there are only three hunters left on the list?”

“Yeah, Roy Raymond is number three.”

“Good ole Roy Raymond.” That name pissed Max off. He wanted to punch Roy in the face for betraying him. Maybe he would get the chance. Maybe these bold vampires will kill Roy. Max wouldn’t shed a tear over Roy that was for damn sure.

Scar hated saying this out loud but it was now or never. “I’m on the list. I am number two.” Scar looked over at Donny. They both shared a grave look of despair.

“So basically these vampires have eliminated seven hunters without any raised eyebrows.” Max mused.

“Seems that way.” Scar said.

“This kill list, so if that douche bag Roy is number three and Scar you’re number two. Who the hell is number one?” Max innocently asked.

There was a brief uncomfortable silence. Scar, Donny and Ryan stared at Max. How long was it going to take for him to figure it out?

“Son of a bitch, I am number one.” Max wondered why he was so lucky, well unlucky. He didn’t have to wonder long. Max was the most feared vampire hunter in the states. His name made some vamps quake with fear. Meeting Max Fox was meeting the reaper. He was an overachiever when it came to killing vamps. He actually enjoyed it. He started out in the life when he was just an adolescent. He killed his first vamp at the age of eight. He slaughtered the vamp that killed his mother.
