“It is nearly time to harvest most of our food. Their job is to work their way through the fields checking to see if it is time to harvest. We need to pick them at the optimum time. When the weather is right and the crops are ripe.”

On they flew, Evie finding it hard to comprehend the vastness of the farming belt. Small houses dotted the landscape, the farmhouses, she guessed. “How much farther?”

“There,” he said, pointing to a small hill rising up to her left. They flew lower, and then steered for a cream-coloured house, lying on its own in the lee of the hill. “Wow.”

“Do you like it?” he asked eagerly.

“Yes. It is wonderful.”

“The garden will take some time to put in order. But soon, if we work together, it will provide us with fruits and nuts. I had planted some vegetables, but whether they are still edible, I’m not sure.”

They landed and the ramp lowered; he held her hand and led her down, looking proud. The colours swam across his face and he didn’t seem concerned. Ishk had come home, and he was trying to let down the barriers between them. She liked that he wanted to at least try to be open with her.

“Wait, I have something for you.” He went back inside and came back with a journal, which he handed to her. “I thought you would like to write down all that I teach you, just as the females did long ago.”

She leafed through the empty pages. “You don’t mind sharing your knowledge with a human female?”

“No, Evie, I don’t.” He kissed her once more. “At this moment, I would share everything with you. This is my home, it has been my home for sixty Earth years or more, yet not until now has it ever felt like a home.”

“Will you show me?”

“Yes, Evie,” he said, taking her hand, kissing it tenderly and then walking to the front door of his little house. “Wait.”

“What’s wrong?” she asked, concerned, pressing the journal to her chest as if it would protect her. Was there some wild animal inside waiting to eat them?

“There is another of your Earth traditions I would like to use.”

“Oh.” She couldn’t think of one, but Ishk had obviously done his homework. Bending down, he lifted her into his arms and carried her over the threshold.

“I believe I have done it correctly.” He placed her down on the floor in his hallway.

“That is for couples who are married.” She giggled all the same and was touched by his gesture.

“Aren’t we married?”

“Not really. But I guess the lottery is the same kind of contract.” She wrapped her hands around his neck and kissed him.

When he pulled away from her he said, “We should make the tea to stop your morning sickness.”

“There is time for that later. Because I think we should first celebrate another Earth custom. If we are married, and you have just carried me over the threshold, we should be on our honeymoon.” She had mixed it up a little. Ishk would never know.

“Honeymoon? What is that?”

She took his hand and said, “It’s where you take me to bed and make love to me.”

“I like that tradition much more.” He took her upstairs to a bedroom under the eaves of his house. Across the hallway was another room, empty for now, but where their child would sleep one day.

Undressing her, he kissed her skin, his fingers tracing the three small burns on her shoulder, then he kissed them as if he could make them disappear. In a way he had, he had given her hope and safety and freedom. Whether that would one day be love, she still wasn’t sure. But as he lay her down on the bed and made love to her, she hoped they could find their way to a place where they were a proper family. Father, mother and son. Another new chapter in the life of Evie Miller. This time she prayed it would be a happy one.

The Hierarchy

“You chose well, Okil. Evie has brought about the desired change in Ishk. For now, any uprising is over. With no leader, it melted away. In fact, I think most Karalians are looking forward to having a human female in their bed. The prime is at its peak, the need to mate at its strongest; we must capitalise on this before the urge fades.” Lytril stood alone with Okil in the Hier Council chamber.

“Thank you, Hier Ruler.”

“As a reward, I think it is time you were given a female from the lottery. The announcement will be made that the draw will take place daily as soon as arrangements can be made. I feel you will be needed here on Karal, helping the new females to settle in. So it seems right you should have a female of your own.”

“Thank you, Hier Ruler.”

“Okil. Is there something you want to tell me?” Lytril could see Okil struggling to control his emotions, the colours faint but visible across his face.

“No, Hier Ruler, I am overwhelmed by your generosity, that is all.”

“Find a compatible female and then make the necessary arrangements.”

“I will. Thank you.”

Lytril watched Okil walk from the chamber. Something was wrong with him, but Lytril could not decide what, not without laying his hands on him. He would leave it for now. As long as there was no problem with the females already here, then no doubt it would pass and Okil would be his normal optimistic self.

It might just be that he wanted his own female to warm his bed.

Lytril had no idea how true his theory was, or what Okil was willing to do to make sure the woman he loved came to Karal.
