She smiled and took the candy from his hand,
noticing it looked rather worse for wear. And the shape didn’t seem
right. She glanced up at him in disbelief. “You actually saved me
one? I’m impressed.”
“Open it.”
She peeled back the foil and a diamond
engagement ring sparkled from the metallic blue folds. She stared
at it, more astonished than if he really had learned self-control
concerning his chocolate addiction.
The brilliant gemstone became distorted. She
looked up at Brad, blinking to keep him in focus. He lowered
himself onto one knee and held her hand tight. Somewhere in the
background she heard the whir of a camera.
Minnie let out a tiny squeal before clapping
her hand over her mouth.
Stephan whispered, “Told you so.”
“Oh, be quiet!”
Brad tugged on Delphine’s hand. “How do you
say ‘will you marry me’ in French?”
Delphine bit her lip,
willing herself to stem her tears. Her unladylike sniff broke the
waiting silence inside the shop. “Um,
veux-tu m’épouser
.”
He repeated the phrase with such poor diction
it translated more like ‘seen all corn poised’. But it was good
enough for her.
“
Oui
.”
Brad stood and grinned. “Even I know that
one.” He took the ring and slid it onto her finger.
Delphine tasted the chocolate on his mouth
when he kissed her. And like chocolates, one just wasn’t
enough.
Gradually, she became aware the photographer
continued to take pictures. Someone’s watch alarm went off.

Without ending the kiss, Delphine reached
over Brad’s shoulder to the sign on the door. She flipped it
around.
