“Move back to Kilrigh.” he said suddenly.

Fiona frowned, extracted herself from him and sat up.

“Don’t spoil things, Brodie.” She climbed off the bed and ran her fingers through her hair. “Can I use your toothbrush?”

“There’s a spare one under the sink. You can use that.” She nodded and walked into the bathroom. She didn’t see him follow her in but as she lifted the toothbrush to her mouth, she spotted his reflection in the mirror. He looked like a chastised school boy.

“Can I have some privacy?”

“You’re brushing your teeth. How much privacy do you need? We just swapped body fluids. I wanted to say I’m sorry. I won’t mention it again.” He grabbed his own toothbrush and proceeded to stand next to her at the double sink and brush his own teeth.

“Come back to bed. Please don’t fall out with me over one stupid comment.”

Fiona stood up on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his lips.

“I haven’t fallen out with you. But you need to leave it. You’re asking too much of me right now. Maybe we could try long distance and see how it goes.”

Brodie nodded but she noticed his shoulders slightly slumped as he walked back into the bedroom. She finished cleaning herself up then ran into the bedroom and jumped into bed, snuggling up to him.

Fiona lay awake listening to Brodie’s breathing regulate and deepen as sleep claimed him. What was she going to do? He was pushing her too hard and too fast. But the problem was that he was pushing her in the way that she wanted to go. There were practical considerations about leaving the vet practice in Glasgow but she knew that was easily overcome. What if things didn’t work out with Brodie? They hardly knew each other. She knew the boy she had grown up with but not the man he had become. She cared for him deeply – might even love him. But she was unwilling to call her feelings ‘love’ just yet. She had to work out what to do, and quickly.

Chapter 8

Fiona was not sure what time it was when Brodie’s phone rang. She awoke to find him trying to answer it in the dark.

“Yes... ah right. How long ago?...Mm-hmm... OK, I’ll be down as soon as I can... No, I’ll look at her first and see if we need a vet. OK, Davey. Yup. I’ll be down soon.”

Brodie ended the call and in the eerie glow cast by the phone’s light, Fiona could see him scowling at the phone. He began to climb out of bed but stopped when she spoke.

“Why don’t you take the vet who’s in your bed with you? What’s the problem?”

“I’ve got a cow that is pregnant with twins and her labour has all but stopped. It’s been an hour since she had her show.”

“Oh, right. Well, I’ll come with you in case I’m needed.”

She climbed out of bed and was putting on her bra when she stopped.

“Shit!”

“What?”

“I don’t have anything to wear.”

“Oh!” Brodie opened a drawer, extracted a black t-shirt, and threw it to her.

“Your jeans won’t fit me. My hips will be too wide.”

He pulled open the bottom drawer and pulled something out. “It’s all I’ve got,” he said, unravelling the all-in-one jumpsuit.

“A boiler suit? Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.” she said, accepting the big blue garment from him. She put it on and laughed when it completely drowned her. Brodie bent down and quickly rolled up the legs He walked over to the wardrobe and brought back a belt.

“It’s the type of belt that doesn’t have holes. It should be fine.” He placed it around her waist and she pulled it tight. “There are about twenty pairs of Wellingtons at the back door.  I’m sure there will be a pair that fit.” He tossed her a pair of socks and she stood up and twirled.

“Sexy as hell,” he commented.

Fiona walked into the lounge and found her phone so she could contact her father to organise for Bella to pack a bag of things for her. Her father agreed to bring over her handbag, the overnight bag, and her vet bag, which was in her car. She went over to Brodie’s desk and grabbed an elastic band to pull her hair back into a messy bun. Then they hurried down to the back door and she selected a pair of boots that fit.

Once in the barn, Davey showed them to the pen where the cow was standing. Fiona walked around the cow and felt different parts of its stomach.

“Get a bucket of warm soapy water, then you can go home to bed. We’ll get this,” she told Davey. He hurried to the other end of the barn and returned a minute or so later with the soapy water. Fiona removed the top half of the boiler suit and washed her arms right up to the t-shirt. She cleaned the back end of the cow, then pushed her hand inside and felt around. She had done this a few times before and had to admit that it was never as disgusting as she feared. She could feel the head and one leg of one of the calves.

“Its leg is tucked under. It just needs moved. Go round to the head and pet the cow. Call her by name and pet her the way you would a dog if it was in pain.”

“By name? It doesn’t have a name. It’s a cow,” Brodie scoffed.

“Well, give it a name,” she growled back. “You’re going to sound bloody daft calling her ‘cow.’”

“Wait till the boys hear I named one of my cows. I’ll never live it down.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll misdirect them and tell them you used to have Spiderman swimming trunks.” She was working to push the calf back in to free its leg. It had to be a delicate operation or the cow could be badly hurt and end up needing put down.

“There, there, Daisy,” she heard Brodie saying. “It’s OK girl. We’ll get your babies out safely.”

She shook her head slightly. She couldn’t believe that ‘Daisy’ was the best he could come up with. But at least his talking to the animal seemed to be calming her and making her own job easier. She felt the leg ease into the correct position.

Withdrawing her hand, Fiona stepped back and smiled to herself.

“Everything is in the right position now. We just need to wait and see if her labour moves forward now. I’m not keen to do a C-Section.”

“But you can do one if necessary.”

“I can but I don’t have all the equipment. I could save the calves but I think Daisy would need to be destroyed.”

“You see, that’s why we don’t name farm animals,” he muttered, running his hand disconsolately through his short black hair.

“It may not come to that. In fact, I think we have a calf coming now.”

Fiona stood behind the cow and caught the animal as it slithered out of its mother. She then lifted it up and carried it round to its mother’s head for the cow to lick her newborn clean. By the time the second calf appeared–a relatively quick and easy birth for a breach calf–the first calf was already standing on wobbly legs.

Fiona walked to the end of the barn and washed her arms properly. The t-shirt was ruined and she took it off. She walked back to the stall with just her bra covering her top half and sank down on a bale of hay.

“Are you trying out to be the cover girl in
Farm Girls Monthly
?” Brodie raised an eyebrow at her.

“Does such a publication exist?”

“I don’t know but if it doesn’t, looking at you, it sure as hell should.”

He grabbed her around the waist and kissed her passionately. “I need a shower before we take this any further. Remember where my hands have been.”

At that moment, they heard the barn door open and her father hurried in carrying three bags.

He came around the stall, found the cow and her two calves and smiled.

“I’m glad to see you didn’t need the vet’s bag after all.” he said, sounding decidedly cheerful for someone who had been dragged out his bed at 3:30a.m.

“Thanks Dad. I’m sorry to have bothered you. I wasn’t sure what we would find when we got here and I wanted to be prepared.”

“It’s no bother lass. Though I would prefer you to have more clothes on.” She coloured and pulled the top half of the boiler suit over her shoulders and slid her arms into it.

“Sorry, the t-shirt was all covered in... well, you know,” she said, gesturing to the cow.

“Aye,” he assured her. “Well, this prevents you having to make your way back to the croft in the morning in a bridesmaid’s dress.”

“True.”

“I’ll see you later today.” He winked at Brodie and left.

As the barn door closed, Brodie glanced at the cow and then back at Fiona.

“She seems OK. Should we go back to bed and come and check her in the morning?”

“Yeah, it will be a few hours till the third stage is over. She should be fine now though.” Brodie lifted two of the bags and Fiona picked up one and they headed back to the Big House.

Once they were stripped, Fiona suggested they shower together to save time. They stood in the warm spray and shampooed each other’s hair. They rubbed lather all over each other, working each other up. When Fiona ran soapy hands over Brodie’s penis, he groaned in delight. She pulled down the foreskin and rubbed her fingers gently over the velvety head. He pulled her hand away, breathing heavily, allowing the water to rinse it. She stood on tiptoe and whispered to him.

“Make sure it’s rinsed properly. I hate the taste of soap.”

A grin spread across his face and widened as she knelt down, opened her mouth, and took him as fully into her mouth as she could.

She sucked her way back up to the tip and used her tongue to flick up and down the fraenulum, making him groan loudly and thrust his hips. She swallowed him again, digging her teeth in slightly to add to the sensation. He glided his fingers into her long wet hair as she moved her mouth up and down his shaft.

She relaxed her throat to take him deeper and he leaned back against the tiled wall for support. Cupping his balls and giving them a gentle squeeze, she moved her finger behind to press on the erogenous zone on his perineum.

He sucked in a breath and then growled. She knew his growl came from frustration and he was stopping himself from thrusting into her mouth as hard and fast as he wanted to. She went still and allowed him to set the tempo before placing her hand round the base of his cock and working in counter rhythm to him. She flicked her tongue around trying to reach every part of him. His groans became more frequent and loud.

“I’m going to come,” he warned, placing his hand over hers to continue the rhythm when she pulled away, but she didn’t. She clamped her hand tighter around his butt and prepared herself as he elongated in her mouth and his hips jerked. As the hot, salty semen entered her mouth, she swallowed as much as she could and allowed the shower to wash away the rest.

Brodie slid down the wall into a seated position and sat her on his lap.

“Wow!” was all he could manage. They stayed in the streaming water for a few minutes until Brodie got his strength back. Fiona’s head was nestled into his neck and she felt more comfortable with him than she ever had with a man. He lifted her chin and moved his lips to kiss her.

Fiona was trying to fall asleep. She was curled up at Brodie’s side and he was gently running his hand through her still damp hair. She breathed deeply, trying to make her body relax. She knew he thought she was asleep when she heard him whisper softly to her.

“I love you, Fiona Campbell.” He kissed the top of her head. Fiona had to force herself to keep her eyes closed and to continue breathing. Despite the declaration being unexpected, Fiona felt a warmth radiate through her. It came from the knowledge that she loved him too and that he would never hurt her.

That certainly put a different complexion on things. She couldn’t put off the decision about how she was going to move forward from here. She had a very big choice to make.

Chapter 9

Brodie had been disappointed that Fiona had refused to stay at the Big House for Sunday dinner. She had promised she would come back after dinner and they could spend the night together again, hopefully uninterrupted. Fiona had reminded Brodie that it was he who had pushed for her to make it up with her dad and encouraged her to spend more time with him.

Dinner was steak pie, roast potatoes, and vegetables and Fiona, John and Bella sat round the table discussing the wedding.

“Why do you two not get married?” Fiona asked suddenly. John and Bella looked at each other and then at Fiona.

“Er, well, we...”

“You obviously love each other. It seems crazy.”

“Well, you see, we didn’t want to upset you,” managed her dad.

“Oh!” Fiona scowled at this news. Then she straightened her shoulders and spoke. “I’m sorry. I’ve been such a brat to both of you for years. You shouldn’t put off your own happiness for me. I love you both and I think you should have the chance to be happy. You only live once. You could get married in weeks. Why don’t you start organising it tomorrow? I’ll come up from Glasgow for it.”

Her father and prospective stepmother looked at each other and John shrugged. “I’d love to marry you, Bella. Will you marry me?”

“Of course,” said Bella, wiping a stray tear from her eye.

“Then my work here is done,” said Fiona, putting down her knife and fork and getting up to leave.

“Where are you going?”

“Brodie’s.”

“Fee, there was something you said a few minutes ago that I think you should take heed of yourself.”

Fiona stopped and stared at her dad, wondering what he meant.

“You said you only live once. And that’s true. Brodie might not wait around forever and he obviously cares about you.”

“I know, Dad. I’m working on it. Before I go, I’ll explain my plan.”

She sat back down and told Bella and her father what she hoped to do about her future.

~* * *~

The week flew by far too fast for Fiona’s liking. She split her time between Brodie’s apartment in the Big House and the croft. She also helped Bella organise the wedding in six weeks’ time.

One morning after breakfast, Fiona was alone in the main kitchen of the Big House while Brodie had nipped out to deal with a small delivery emergency. The Laird walked into the kitchen and smiled at her.

“Fiona, it’s lovely to see you.”

“It’s nice to see you too.” Fiona responded to his warm smile. It was a mirror image of Brodie’s smile.  Her lover looked like a young version of his dad, though the Laird was slightly shorter and wider than his son.
