The whole time Andras was caring for her, he didn't say
anything about whether the rite had worked. Was it too soon to tell?

Using their newly-created bond. Katie tried to figure out
what he was feeling, but could sense only a roil of strong emotion.

Dread began to creep up from the pit of her stomach. She
huddled against his chest as he settled next to her in the bed and pulled the light-as-a-cloud
goose-down comforter over them against the chill of the autumn night.

"Did it work?" she asked finally, afraid of the
answer but unable to bear the suspense any longer.

In reply, Andras cupped her cheek, and lovingly tilted her
face up to meet his gaze. "Your aura looks like mother-of-pearl now,"
he said, sounding awed. "It's beautiful."

In an instant, all of Katie's fears evaporated. "It
worked?" she asked in disbelief. "It really worked? I won't have to
leave you?"

"No." She saw tears carving silver tracks down his
cheeks just before he kissed her, long and hard and possessively. "You're
mine, Katie. Mine forever now, love."
