“No. Well, maybe. We broke up last night. So I’m not going with him.”

“You’re going with Mr. Gherring, then?”

“Oh no! He’s going with Ellen.”

“With Ellen? But I thought… Wait, I think maybe Mr. Gherring is toying with you.”

“Oh, he’s definitely playing some kind of game I don’t understand. He… He kissed me again. Today, on the elevator. He kissed me, even though he’s dating Ellen—I feel like I cheated with him!”

“I see. So I think we must teach Mr. Gherring a lesson.”

“Oh, I don’t know. I’m not good at playing games. And I don’t want to mess up his relationship with Ellen. I’m not that sort of person.”

“I understand, dear, but he needs to learn he can’t play with women’s emotions. Ellen would want him to learn this lesson, right?”

“I guess so. But I’m not very good at this sort of thing.”

“It will be easy. Do you have a sexy dress?”

Anne chuckled. “As a matter of fact, I do.”

“Wonderful! Now you need to do as exactly as I tell you…”

Anne was concentrating on steeling her nerves. She barely heard Gram chatting on the way to the party. She’d managed to delay their departure so she could make a grand entrance. That’s what Johanna had said—to make a grand entrance. But she wouldn’t look very grand if she were shaking like a leaf.

She went over the plan in her head. She had to find someone to flirt with, since Henri wouldn’t be there. Johanna said Steven wouldn’t learn his lesson if she stood on the side, alone like a forlorn rejected potted plant. She wasn’t sure how, but she definitely had to avoid looking like a potted plant.

Approaching the door, Gram said, “Let me go in first dear. I want to make a grand entrance.”

Anne thought maybe she should watch to see how it was done. But then someone might see her. No, she’d just have to wing it. She waited for what seemed like an hour, but was actually only about two minutes.

Her spiked heels were four inches high. She hoped she’d acquired some grace during her time in New York City or this grand entrance might be a magnificent fall.

Okay, the next step made her feel like an idiot, but Johanna had insisted this part was essential. She set her mind to the mantra Johanna had given her, saying it over and over in her mind in rhythm.
I’m way too hot to handle!
She took a deep breath and sauntered slowly through the doorway like she’d practiced at the apartment.

She stood inside the doorway and surveyed the crowd, as Johanna had directed her.
Act like you are checking everyone else out, to see who is worthy of your attention. Find your mark! He needs to be a handsome man without an escort. It doesn’t matter how old he is—any age will do.
She started to panic when she saw Steven staring at her. But this time luck was on her side.

“Wow, Anne! You look really hot!” Evan Sterling strolled to her side, offering his arm. “Can I get you a drink?”

“Evan!” Anne smiled, grasping onto his arm. “You don’t know how glad I am to see you!” She tried to remember her mantra, but it kept slipping out of her head. “I could really use your arm to make sure I don’t trip and fall on these heels.”

Evan laughed. “Anne, you’re like a breath of fresh air. I don’t remember meeting another woman so unaffected.”

“What are you doing here? Do you work for Gherring Inc.?”

“No, Gram invited me. Steven will probably shoot me when he finds out. But it’s worth it, just to have you smile at me.” His eyes widened as he peered over her shoulder. “Speak of the devil. Here he comes.”

“Hello cousin. Great party you have here.”

“What are you doing here, Evan?” said Steven, with unveiled anger.

Anne swirled around to face him, tucking her hand around Evan’s elbow. “He’s my date. I’m allowed to bring a date, right?”

His expression was stormy. “I thought you were coming with Henri.”

“Change of plans. By the way, where’s
your
date? You’re still dating Ellen, aren’t you? After our little ‘talk’ on the elevator, I wasn’t sure.”

But he wasn’t listening. He was staring… at her dress. Or at the missing parts of it. “What… What did you say?” He tore his gaze away from the sheer silk beaded panels and locked eyes with her.

Evan laughed. “Yes, cousin. She does look extraordinary tonight, doesn’t she? Seems it’s my lucky day.”

Steven scowled. “No one asked y—”

“Hi Anne,” said Ellen, coming beside Steven to take his arm. “Wow! Fantastic dress!”

“Thanks Ellen. I like yours, too. That cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors.” Poor Ellen. Anne had set her up with Steven, thinking he was a man of principle. She’d be heartbroken to know he’d kissed her in the elevator today.

“Shall we get that drink now?” Evan led Anne away, throwing a smile over his shoulder. “See you later, Stevie.”

As she walked she could feel Steven's eyes throwing ice daggers at her back. “Thanks, Evan. I really needed to get away.”

“Yes, I wanted to get away from Stevie as well. And we really can get a drink if you like.”

“I’m not really thirsty, yet. But you can get something.”

“Why don’t we dance, instead?”

Anne remembered another of Johanna’s instructions.
Dance as much as you can. But don’t dance with Mr. Gherring.
“I’d love to dance.”

The band was playing a slow song, and numerous couples were on the dance floor. Evan and Anne moved smoothly into the undulating group. From a distance she could see Steven in an intense conversation with Gram. He didn’t look very happy, but Gram seemed unmoved.

“You really do look great, tonight. This dress is… quite enticing.” Anne blushed as his gaze fell down to the sheer silk panels. “And not many women have the figure to wear this.”

“What you’re actually saying is ‘If you were a little more well-endowed, this dress would be really, really interesting.’”

Evan chuckled. “I can’t believe how funny you are. Stevie’s an idiot to be with that other girl, when he could be with you.”

“Mr. Gherring’s my boss and that’s all. I’m not his type.”

“Is that so? Well I’m glad to hear it, because you’re certainly my type.” He pulled her a little closer to him, placing his hands on her lower back and playing with the beading on the sheer silk.

Anne felt a little nervous. “Actually, I’m probably not anyone’s type. I… I don’t sleep around.”

“I hear you saying that, but this dress says something else.” He slipped his hands to the side of her dress, his thumbs fingering the peek-a-boo material.”

Anne’s face went white, and she clamped her arms down on his hands. “Stop it!”

“Hey, you can’t blame a guy for trying.”

His hands slid back to their proper place on her back. Anne was uneasy in his arms, but he seemed to be acting the perfect gentlemen, as they continued to dance and chat. Then his eyes focused behind her. He made an annoyed moaning sound, grabbing her elbow and leading her off to the side.

“What a bother. Stevie’s coming to the dance floor. Let’s get that drink now. What would you like?”

“I don’t know—I don’t drink much. Just something where I can’t taste the alcohol.”

He returned with two drinks and handed her one.

“What is this?”

“It’s a Lemon Drop Martini,” he said. “I think you’ll like it.”

She took a sip. “Wow, this is good.”

She spotted Steven on the dance floor with Ellen, but his gaze was focused in her direction. His eyes seemed to reach past her carefully constructed defenses. Could he read her mind? Did he realize how much he affected her? How much he’d confused her? She took another gulp of her drink. As her stomach growled, she realized she hadn’t had anything to eat all day.

“I need some food—I just realized I’m starving.”

“Right this way.” Evan guided her to the buffet table.

“Where can I put this,” she said, referring to her now empty glass.

“You’ve already finished it?” He chuckled, taking her empty glass and handing it to a passing waiter.

“It was light and tasty—good choice. I don’t usually like alcohol,” she said, piling some carrots, cherry tomatoes, and cheese cubes on her plate.

“The good stuff is over here,” said Evan, indicating a table with various meats, including boiled shrimp and roast beef.

“Ughh! I don’t think I can eat anything that heavy.” She popped a piece of cheese into her mouth.

Evan ate a few boiled shrimp while Anne munched on her veggies. But her appetite was quickly assuaged, and she found a waiter to take the plate from her hands.

“I think my stomach’s shrunken. I haven’t eaten much this week. Oh… I can feel that drink already.”

“We should dance again. Some exercise to clear your head. Besides, Stevie’s in the buffet line now.”

She was a little wobbly walking back to the dance floor. But he held her close as they danced, and she felt pretty stable. Feeling drowsy, she laid her head on Evan’s shoulder and relaxed in his arms. She thought Johanna had mentioned something about
dance with your head on his shoulder
, but she couldn’t remember for sure. His hands traveled slowly up and down her back, and they swayed gently to the music. When the music changed to an upbeat song, he simply ignored the new music and continued to rock in a slow circle, until she was in a tranquil trance-like state.

She could almost imagine she was in Steven's arms again. She remembered how it had felt to dance with him at the gala. But he’d held her lightly, not tight and close like this. She would’ve liked Steven to hold her more closely. And his hands were not on her back like this. Wait! Evan’s hands were not on her back—they were back under her arms, toying with the beading on the sheer side panels. His thumbs were… Anne pushed out of Evan’s arms abruptly.

“Stop it!” she cried, looking at him with a horrified expression. The room began to spin and she stumbled a little. He reached out to steady her, but she stepped back, out of his reach.

“I think the lady doesn’t want you to touch her again,” said Steven, somehow materializing by her side, his expression dark and threatening.

Anne was grateful for the reprieve, but she was fairly certain this hadn’t been in Johanna’s instructions. She knew she wasn’t supposed to dance with Steven, so she quickly moved away from the dance floor. She saw Katie and Gary and headed in their direction. She’d just reached them when Steven caught up with her.

“Anne, could you spare me a second? I’d like to discuss something concerning work.”

She panicked—Johanna hadn’t told her what to do if Steven asked to talk to her alone. “Uhmm, I don’t know…”

“Please. Just for a moment. It’s important.” His expression was so fierce, she feared he would make a scene.

“Okay, sure. Just for a moment.”

She followed him to a relatively empty area near the doorway. “Why are you here with Evan? Do you purposely date men I detest simply to irritate me?”

“Gram introduced me to Evan and… Wait, you said you wanted to talk about work.”

“This is about work. It’s… It’s about… Okay, I lied. I wanted to straighten out some misunderstandings.”

“Are you going to explain what happened on the elevator today?” She remembered what Johanna had said.
Make him explain why he kissed you when he’s supposedly dating Ellen.

“Yes. Yes, that’s part of it. Anne, I—”

“Because I really want to know why you kissed
me
when you’re dating Ellen.”

“But Ellen doesn’t mind. She’s—”

“Give me a break! I’m not that naïve! Did you tell her? Does she know you kissed me?” She was starting to get really angry. Perhaps the alcohol had made her lose her inhibitions.

“No, but—”

“Well, obviously you kissed me because you thought I was still dating Henri. So…
News flash
! We’ve broken up, okay?”

“I’m glad, but Anne I need to—”

“But I can’t handle it anymore. Maybe it’s easy for you to just kiss me and stir me up like that. But it’s not easy to be on the receiving end—I haven’t slept in days!”

“I haven’t slept—”

“I don’t want to hear about who you’re sleeping with because here’s another news flash…
I'm sleeping alone
!” She felt her lower lip quivering.

“I am too. I’m sleeping alone.” He grabbed her shoulders. “Look at me. I’m telling the truth.”

She squeezed her eyes shut as tears began to fall down her cheeks. “I’m tired, Mr. Gherring. I’m going home. Please don’t do this. Ellen deserves better.”

“Just wait. Okay? Just wait for a minute. Right here. Don’t move. Okay? I’m going to get Ellen.” He left her standing by the door. Alone. Crying. This wasn’t anywhere in the instructions Johanna had given. She walked out of the door, out of the party, out of the hotel. Out of Steven Gherring’s life.

Chapter Eighteen - To the Airport

The taxi took her to the apartment building. “Just wait for me, okay? I’ll be back in five minutes. I need to go to the airport.”

“Okay lady, but you’ll have to pay while I wait.”

“That’s fine. Please, just wait…”

She hurried into the lobby in her bare feet, carrying her shoes. She couldn’t run in her new four-inch heels. Rayna watched her bolt past the desk toward the elevator.

“Anne! What are you doing? Where are you going?”

“To the airport.”

“Wait, Anne. What are you talking about?”

She ignored Rayna, and dashed into the elevator, pushing the button for the tenth floor repeatedly in an attempt to make it move faster. When she got to her apartment, she threw her toiletries into a carry-on bag with some underwear and a change of clothes. She didn’t even bother to change out of her dress, but put on some comfortable boots and a warm coat. In less than five minutes, she was back in the lobby and headed for the door.

“Anne! Wait! Where are you going?” Rayna caught her before she could escape.

“To the airport. I’m going to the airport.” Her tears were coming in torrents.

“But where are you going?”

“I’m sorry, Rayna. I need to go now,” she sobbed, moving toward the door.

Rayna grabbed her arm. “But wait. Why do you have to leave so fast? Where are you going?”

“I’m going… I’m going to Texas, where I belong. I have to go now. My taxi’s waiting outside.” She swiped at her tears and peered out the glass door.

“But wait. You don’t have to leave this instant. Why are you leaving so fast? What happened?”

“I have to go. The taxi’s waiting—”

“What time is your flight?”

“I—I don’t know. I haven’t got one yet. I just have to get away from here.”

“You’re running away? Really? The Anne Best I know would never run away.”

She sobbed again. “She’s a fake! I’m a fake! I came out here and pretended to be someone I’m not. I thought I wanted an adventure. I thought I wanted excitement. A new start.”

“What happened, honey?”

“I did something really stupid…” Her tears were tumbling off her face and puddling on her coat collar.

“What? What did you do? If you’re in trouble, I’ll help you. Antonio will help, too. We love you. You don’t have to do this alone. Are you pregnant?”

“No. I’m not. I almost wish I could be, though.”

“What is it?” Rayna’s eyes were wide.

“I fell in love with Steven Gherring!”

“What?”

“It’s true. Can you believe it? Countrified widow, mother of two, from Weatherford, Texas. And I fell in love with Steven Gherring.” She laughed bitterly. “I know. I couldn’t believe it either. I kept trying to convince myself it wasn’t true.”

“Well, Anne. Doesn’t he kind of like you, too?”

“No. He’s dating Ellen. I should know. I’m the one who matched them together. Just like you and Antonio. And he… he was… you know…
with
her. And what am I supposed to do now? Huh?” Her voice rose to a hysterical pitch.

“You should go upstairs and go to sleep and decide in the morning what to do. My mother always told me you shouldn’t make an important decision in the heat of passion.”

Anne’s mouth dropped open. “I always said that to my girls, too.”

“So you’ll stay? At least until tomorrow?”

“Rayna, this is not the heat of passion for me. If I stay, then I’ll be passionate. I might even betray my friendship with Ellen and do something with Steven Gherring I’d regret for the rest of my life. I don’t want to go, but I have to.”

She hugged Rayna, who was now crying with her. “Please don’t go.”

“I have to,” Anne said, picking up the carry-on bag she’d dropped on the floor. “I don’t belong here. I don’t know where I belong…”

“You belong with me.” Steven's voice was firm as he strode behind her.

Her heart began to thunder in her chest. “No, I—”

“I took the liberty of paying off your taxi. But my car is outside. I’ll drive you to the airport.” He picked up her bag and took her by the arm, leading her toward the waiting limo.

Over his shoulder he said, “Thank you, Rayna. I appreciate your help.”

“Rayna!” Anne cried, gazing accusingly at her friend.

Rayna silently mouthed, “Sorry,” but she had a traitorous grin on her face.

Inside the warm interior, Steven sat across from Anne. She was wrapped tightly in her coat, hugging herself for comfort. He smiled at her.

“It’s a long ride. You should take off your coat and get comfortable.”

She didn’t respond, but sat staring at her feet. He followed her gaze.

“Nice boots. But I really like those sexy sandals you had on earlier.”

She refused to answer. Even talking was dangerous with Steven Gherring.

“I must say, you’re very difficult to converse with. Either you talk so fast you don’t let me get a word in edgewise, or you refuse to talk at all.”

“There’s nothing to say.”

“Well, why don’t you ask your questions again, and actually listen to the answers this time?”

She closed her eyes. “I’m not asking any more questions, because I don’t want to know the answers.”

“Fine!” He let his irritation show for the first time. “I’ll do both parts. First question. Where’s Ellen? Answer. She’s with Ben.”

Anne opened her eyes, regarding him with suspicion. “Who’s Ben?”

“Nicely done. See how much more fun it is when you participate? Ben is Ellen’s—wait for it—boyfriend. In fact, she already told you about him. He’s her leading man.”

“But…”

“Ah-ha! Now you have so many questions to ask.” He wore a smug grin.

“So you aren’t really dating?”

“Nope.”

“And Tuesday night?”

“Nothing happened.”

Anne contemplated his words, and suddenly she was filled with rage. “You pig!” She flew across the car and began to pound on his arm with her fists. “You made me believe you slept with her! You called me up there! I can’t believe you did that!”

He grabbed her arms to stop the beating. “Wait! I’m sorry. I admit it wasn’t the wisest decision I made. But you drove me to it!” One of her hands escaped to strike him. “Ow!” He secured the offending hand again.

“You were the one who set me up with Ellen after I asked you not to. I only wanted to find out if you’d be happy if I accepted your offer.”

Anne was still twisting her arms to get them free. “Why would Ellen do that to me? We were friends.”

“You were the one who forced her to meet me. She said she tried to talk you out of it. We just made a bargain. I’d help the play monetarily and get her some publicity, and she’d help me make you jealous.”

Anne stopped struggling. “So you wanted to make me jealous? And then you kissed me to teach me a lesson?”

He pulled her hands toward him and placed them on his chest. “Do you feel my heart beating?”

She nodded—his heart was pounding almost as fast as hers.

“I kissed you because I couldn’t help myself. And soon… I’m going to do much more than kiss you.”

He pulled the coat off her shoulders and threw it on the floor.

“Did I mention how much I like this new dress? These little parts on the side where I can see your skin through the fabric…” He ran his fingers lightly up and down her side, dangerously close to her breast.

Anne’s heart threatened to leap from her chest. She moaned, and then grabbed his hand and pushed it away. Tears began to fall anew.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I just can’t do this. I really want to. But I can’t.”

He groaned. “I know, but I’ve suffered for longer than you can imagine. Do you know how long I’ve wanted you?”

She shook her head, crying miserably.

“I think I knew after that first day, when you had no idea who I was. I knew I’d found something that had been missing all my life.”

Her eyes were closed, but she felt the gentle pressure of his fingers on her jaw. “Look at me, please.”

She opened her eyes and watched his face dancing through a shimmer of tears. His voice was soft. “I thought… I thought you wanted me, too. Was I wrong?”

She shook her head. “No, I
did
want you.”

“But you don’t anymore? I’m too late? I waited too long?”

She couldn’t bear the devastation in his eyes. “It’s not that. I just can’t do what you want me to do. I can’t be what you want. What you need.”

“And what is that? What do you think I want?”

“I think you want me to… to sleep with you.” Anne blushed almost painfully at the words.

“Oh no! I want you very much awake. But I do want you in my bed.” His dimples appeared. “I don’t want a one night stand, I want—”

“I’m sorry, I just can’t.” She began to cry in earnest.

“But I’m telling you—”

“I’ve thought about it. Believe me, I’ve thought about it. But it’s just part of who I am. It feels wrong to me. I can’t go to bed with a man I’m not married to.”

“Yes, I know. But I’m not—”

“Don’t you see? I can’t stay here and watch you be with another woman. It hurts too much!” She buried her face in her hands.

“Anne… You’re doing it, again.”

“What? What am I doing?”

“That thing where you don’t let me finish a sentence. You don’t fight fair. It’s my turn to speak.”

“Okay, but if you—”

He halted her words with a forceful kiss, holding both of her arms securely in his hands. He withdrew his lips, and she tried to remember what she was going to say.

“You can’t—”

He kissed her again, swallowing her words. His hands moved behind her head, tangling in her hair. This time his kiss lingered. He pulled back gently, his lips lightly caressing her mouth.

“Ready to let me talk again?”

She nodded, licking her swollen lips.

“I do want you in my bed. But I want you there every night for the rest of my life.”

Her heart doubled its pace. “Are you… Are you asking me to marry you?”

“Well, sort of. Part asking, part begging, part demanding. Whatever will get you to agree.” His sparkling blue eyes were full of hope. “So will you?”

“No. Absolutely not.” Anne felt her insides churning as her heart fought against what she knew was right. “I won’t have you making some rash decision you’ll regret for the rest of your life.”

He pulled a ring case from his pocket. “I don’t make rash decisions. I told you, I’m a very careful man.”

“You’d ask me to marry you, just to sleep with me? That’s ridiculous! You’d regret it afterward. Heck, I don’t even remember what to do anymore.”

He smiled lasciviously. “I’d be happy to jog your memory. But that’s not why I’m asking you to marry me. Don’t you remember our conversation about this… in Switzerland? I told you exactly what I wanted in a wife.”

He moved his head lower to catch her downcast eyes. “I said I wanted someone I wouldn’t be bored with after six months. And I wanted someone that would be fun to grow old with. Someone who’d help me to be the best man I can be. And someone who needed me as much as I need her.”

He pressed his lips in a gentle caress on her cheek. “That’s you. Don’t you know that? Can’t you see? There’s no one else in the world who’d be more perfect for me.”

“But—”

“Now, the only question is—am I the someone for you?” He bit his lips, waiting for an answer. But she closed her eyes and squeezed out another deluge of tears.

“Okay. That wasn’t quite the reaction I was hoping for…”

Somehow all her emotions seemed to be flooding her mind at once. She couldn’t stop her tears long enough to speak. So Steven scooped her up into his lap and held her tightly, as if she might decide to flee again.

Finally the tears slowed, and she attempted to speak. “I… I’ve worked so hard to convince myself th-that it could never ha-happen. It just doesn’t s-seem real.”

“Do you remember your list? The one from Switzerland?”

She shook her head.

“Well I remember—I memorized it. You wanted someone who’d love your girls, and I do—I already love them. And you wanted someone to hold you when you cry. And I’ve done that—I even like doing it. But you also wanted someone with integrity and someone you could trust. I know that’s me. But the question is, do you?”

Could this be real? Maybe she was only hearing the things she wanted to hear.

“I think so. I want it to be true. I need to be sure, though… Are you saying you love me?”

“Love is such a small word for what I feel. For the first time in my life, I have a reason to breathe. I’m enchanted with every part of you I know, and I only know a small part so far. I plan to spend the rest of my life searching out every hidden enchantment in your body and soul. And I’m going to cherish and protect you with every fiber of my being. So, do I love you? No… I lovelovelove you.”
