Chapter 20

God my maker, the devil my friend which side will I choose in the end

-unknown-

The zombie sniffs the air several times and smiles. I can hear my own heart pounding at what I’m witnessing. The zombie starts to hit his head on the door. Slowly at first but then he starts doing it harder. I look over at Mathew and Kat and surprisingly they are still asleep.

The zombie sniffs the air again and abruptly stops and slowly turns around and walks outside of the gate.
Okay, that was weird. What the hell was that about? Was he trying to figure out if there were people in the house? Does he know we are here?

The zombie walks across the street towards another house. Then he repeats the banging again, I can hear him banging on the front door all the way over here.

After a couple minutes, he leaves the house and walks slowly down to the next house. When he’s done with that house he slowly walks out of my eye of sight.

The rest of my shift goes uneventfully; I wake up Kat at four am to stand watch. I tell her about the weird zombie and told her to keep her eyes open for it. I crawl in bed beside Mathew and snuggle up against his back.

I wake up to the smell of eggs and a fresh pot of coffee brewing. I get out of bed just as Kat is coming out of the bathroom.

Mathew is in the kitchen scooping food on three plates. “Good morning handsome, what time is it?” I say as I’m walking into the kitchen. I put my arms around him and give him a kiss. It feels like any other normal morning, when Mathew and our boys would make me breakfast in bed.

The boys would run into our room and jump on the bed and ask if we could go to a park or a movie. Mathew kisses me back and brakes my train of thought

“It’s six am, sexy.”

Oh, how I long for those crazy days. I grab two plates while Mathew grabs a plate and Kat helps grab our coffee. We sit down at the table and share some small talk.

“What’s the plan for today?” I ask looking at our little group.

“We look through the town for some supplies and get back on the road. I want to get back home by tonight if possible,” Mathew says, taking a big bite of his eggs.

Once we are done with our breakfast, Mathew goes to the bathroom to wash up while Kat and I take the plates and put set them in the sink. We both don’t bother cleaning up the kitchen because …well it’s the zombie apocalypse. Who cares about a clean house?

Minutes later Mathew walks out of the bathroom with fresh clean clothes. I smile up at him and say “My turn!” I say.

Kat runs by me so fast I didn’t even see her coming “nope, too slow. I need to pee!” she says as she runs into the bathroom.

“Brat!” I call out to her, as she shuts the door behind her.  That girl is starting to grow on me. While I wait for my turn in the bathroom I start to look through the cabinets for any sort of plastic bags to put the food in.

Finding some tote bags under the sink, I start to pack up the food from the cabinets. Mathew and I grab the tote bags and take them to the car.

We walk back into the house at the same time Kat is grabbing the last tote bag. I walk by her and give her my best pissed off face while trying not to smile. She sticks her tongue out, making me laugh.

I shut the bathroom door behind me and look at myself in the mirror. Oh goodness, I look like crap. My eye is not as puffy, but it’s still black and blue. That fat bitch really did a number on me. At least I can see out of it now. That’s a plus. My hair is all knotted and looks like a birds nest.

I walk out to the living room where I see Mathew and Kat standing in the kitchen. They seem to be concentrating on something, but I can’t seem to make it out from this angle.  As I walk closer I can hear another voice in the room, our friend on the radio.

Good morning, survivors… well, I would love to tell my listeners that I have good news today but, unfortunately, that’s not the case. These zombie hoards are getting bigger and they are smarter.  While I was on the roof of my house yesterday evening I was keeping an eye on the zombies down the street when I saw a giant zombie standing in front of the group.

I couldn’t tell if he was talking to the other zombies in his group. He just stood in front of them staring.  I saw a group of ten zombies walk towards the giant zombie.  Then after about twenty minutes they split up into two groups. Five of the zombies went to the left and the other five went to the right.

I have not seen those ten zombies come back to the hoard near my house, but that giant zombie still stands in front of the rest that stayed behind. I take it he’s the leader of the group. I don’t know about the rest of you survivors, but this is so weird.

Well on the other hand I have not heard anything from the army in twenty four hours. I also have not seen any other survivors in a couple days. I hope they are hiding and are safe.  Okay, ladies and gentlemen I’m signing off until next time. Stay safe and don’t become zombie chow….

That’s just great now we have a leader of these zombie hoards. Can this apocalypse get any worse! “Well that was interesting,” Mathew looks up at me and just shrugs his shoulders, “I didn’t hear him say anything about the evacuation?”

“hmm, maybe he doesn’t know yet,” Mathew answers.

“Let’s go, we don’t need to run into any of those hoards,” I like hearing our radio friend but every time he comes on, it makes me so nervous.

Mathew walks to my side of the car and opens the door,

“Your chariot awaits my dear,” Mathew says as he gives me a kiss on the top of my head. I smile at him and jump into the car.

Kat skips cheerfully to the back seat of the car and jumps in.  Mathew walks around to his side of the car when we start to hear banging on the garage door.

Kat and I turn our heads and look at the garage, the banging stops abruptly.

“Mathew gets into the car,” I say with a shaky voice. He’s about to get into the car when the banging starts up again.

This time the banging is louder and there seem to be a dozen of what I can only assume to be zombies banging on the other side of the garage door.

Mathew jumps into the car and slam’s his door shut.

“What do we do? I can’t open the garage door without letting whatever is outside in?”

The banging is getting louder, harder, as they bang against the garage door.

“I’ll open the garage and jump in the car before the garage door opens up all the way.”

I look back at Kat, shaking my head, disagreeing with her.

“Sam we have no choice, those things are going to get in and I’ll be fast,” She argues back.

“What happens if you can’t get back into the car in time?” Kat looks at Mathew and then back to me.

“We have no choice. I will open the garage door and be quick about it. Besides the garage doors are really slow when they start to open. I’ll have enough time.”

“Sam she’s right.” I look up at Mathew and nod my head yes.

“Okay just hurry and be quick!” I say staring at Kat.

Kat jumps out of the car but leaves her door open. She looks back at us and puts up her fingers and starts to count down, One, Two… my stomach is starting to turn. I grab the gun in my hand and hold on to it for dear life….  Three.

The garage door opens up very slowly as Kat runs back to the car. I turn around to see tons of zombie’s hands at the bottom of the garage door.

Kat jumps into the car just in time when a young boy around ten years old squeeze through the little opening of the garage door.

He slams his body into Kats door and smears blood on the window. I jump in my seat and stare at the little boy.

Chapter 21

We are each our own devil and we make this world our own hell

-Oscar wilde-

He’s missing an eye; his left arm is dangling loosely on his side. As the garage door keeps opening up more and more zombies keep running into the garage. The little zombie boy is slamming his body into the car doors and I can feel the car shake.

Mathew puts the car in reverse and guns it when the garage doors open enough for him to drive out. I guess Mathew must not have waited long enough for the garage door to open because I can hear the garage door scrap on the roof of the car.

We drive backward and hit anything that’s in our way. I feel the car run over several large objects and I close my eyes because I don’t want to know what we are running over.

Mathew puts the car into drive and takes off down the main street of the little town. I open my eyes and turn around to see the same zombie from last night standing in the middle of the road watching us drive away.

He lifts up his hand and slowly waves at us. My mouth drops open and I’m at a loss for words.

“What the hell… did he just wave at us?” Kat asked.

“Yes…. I think he did,” I say frightened.

“Well so much for looking through the town. There’s no way I’m getting out of this car,” Kat says putting her head in her hands.

“Me neither,” I say while looking in the side mirror, I get the feeling that we haven’t seen the last this horde of zombies.

Just the thought of those things following us is making the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Mathew doesn’t say anything as we speed away from the town.

“Mathew, slow down,” I say to him.

Mathew ignores me and continues to speed down the little road into town. I put my hand on his leg and start to rub it in little circles.

“Baby please slow down. It’s ok we got away,” I say alarmed. Mathew keeps looking back at the rear view mirror, finally slowing down. He doesn’t say anything and his face looks scared, alarmed, frightened.

“Someone look at the map to see where we need to go,” Mathew says a little too harsh. I take my hand off of his leg and fumble through the bag at my feet.

I finally found it and put the map in between the seats so Kat could help me look for our location.

“Well…,” Mathew says inpatient. I ignore him and keep looking at the map.

“Found it! We are going to follow this road for at least four miles and then it will collide with the freeway,” Kat says pointing to our location on the map.

Mathew doesn’t say anything but nods his head.

“Mathew please calm down. We got away safely, you’re scaring me.” I wait a couple minutes for him to acknowledge that he heard me, but he just keeps looking forward. “Mathew…..answer me.”

“I heard you Sam. But things are getting worse and worse. We need to hurry up and get home to our family,” He yells at me, making me jump in my seat.

“I know Mathew, I’m just as scared as you are,” I say softly, trying not to cry.

“That zombie heard is following us,” Mathew says more softly this time.

I look up at him and then turn around and look behind us. I don’t see anything, but before I can ask Mathew what he means Kat beats me to it.

“What the hell do you mean?”

“That lead zombie, the one who waved at us…. I saw him when we got attacked by that last heard.”

“How do you know if it was the same zombie Mathew?” I say nervously question him.

“Because, Sam he was the same zombie that slammed into my side of the car. The one that you thought you shot. You must not have killed him.”

“That explains why half of his head was missing,” I whisper to myself, not really caring if anyone has heard me. “What are we going to do Mathew?”

Mathew doesn’t say anything for a couple minutes. I’m about to repeat my question when he finally answers me back.

“I don’t know.  No matter how far away I drive the heard is tracking us. They will always be at least a couple hours behind us. How do you think they got to us so fast this morning? That’s why they were banging on the houses last night during your shift Sam. They knew we were in that town but couldn’t find us right away.”

“How did they find us then?” I question, getting frustrated.

“They must have heard us make noises this morning,” Kat answers me.

Mathew and Kat are right. Last night we were quiet because everyone was asleep, but this morning we were all loud and talking.  Oh god these things are getting smarter. They knew that we would eventually make noise.

I grab my cell phone and try to text, my parents or Jennifer again. I try for several more minutes to send a text but it still won’t go through. Frustrated, I throw my phone down and start crying. I guess the cell phone towers still don’t work, I wonder if they will ever work again.

I want nothing more than to hurry home! Mathew reaches over and grabs my hand and squeezes it.

“Baby we will get home. I promise you, we will get home,” I try my hardest to fake a smile at him.

I want nothing more than to believe him but it’s getting hard and harder for us to even stop and sleep for a night.  I turn away from him and wipe away the tears that escaped my eyes.

Kat starts to cry in the back seat, she is holding her head in her hands. Kat starts rocking back and forth and whispering something that’s too low, I can’t catch.

“Move over,” I say to her as I jump in the back seat and sit next to her. “It will be ok Kat. We will make it through this together.” She shakes her head back and forth and cries even harder.

“My sister didn’t make it. I just know she didn’t.”

I hold her tight in my lap and start to rub her head the way I would rub the boys head when they are upset or sick “shhh Kat. shhh now. Everything will be okay.”

I whisper in her ear, slowly her crying begins to stop and I feel her body go limp on my lap. I move her hair out of her face and notice she is asleep. Poor thing she cried herself to sleep. I grabbed a blanket that was piled up on the floor of the car and put it under her head to make a pillow.
