He straightened. âI will not lie.'
âThat's not a lie â well, the bit about the garden anyway.'
He hesitated for a moment, then grinned broadly. âYou're right.'
I nodded to him and continued towards the offices. âStay happy, Chang.'
âI choose to, therefore I am,' he said, and knelt to return to the weeding. âI am free of needs and cares and my spirit is light.'
Â
When I arrived at my office, Yi Hao wasn't at her desk. I went in and saw that my desk was immaculately tidy and my in-tray was empty. I checked my email and there was nothing that needed doing.
âThis is ridiculous,' I said.
âYou needed to rest,' the stone said.
âI need something to do!'
âJust a sec, I'm finding your secretary.' The stone made a soft sound of amusement, like stones clicking together. âShe's parked herself in the coat cupboard in the reception area.'
I went out to the waiting room and opened the cupboard door. The stone was right: Yi Hao stood there silent, unmoving and unbreathing, as if she was dead.
âYi Hao,' I said, and she snapped into life, her eyes wide.
She jumped out of the cupboard and hugged me gently. âMa'am, welcome back. I had given up â¦' She wiped her eyes. âI am so glad you're back!'
âI've only been gone less than a day.'
âI haven't seen you in
days
, ma'am.'
âWell, I'm back now. What do we have?'
âYour diary is empty, the Dark Lord cleared it. The
only thing you have is Lord Gold's wedding day in six weeks.'
âClasses I'm teaching?'
She cringed. âAll cleared, ma'am. You have nothing. You are supposed to be resting. You're sick, remember?'
âNot any more. The Xuan Wu Serpent cured me of everything.'
She studied me carefully. âYou don't look well. Your face is very pale.'
âI'm still weak, but I need something to do. I suppose I'll just have to wait until the Dark Lord is back and we can divide up the tasks. I'm sure his in-tray is overflowing.'
âWhat happened?' she said.
âCome and sit down,' I gestured for her to take the visitor's chair, âand I'll tell you the whole ridiculous story.'
Â
I ate lunch alone in the Residence; I didn't want to face the questions in the mess. Afterwards, I went back to the infirmary. Simone was still sleeping, so I decided to visit Jade in her office to check on the wedding preparations.
I found her running around her office holding a large sheet of pale pink paper. âThis is the wrong colour!' she said to one of her assistants. âI wanted salmon for the menus!'
She saw me, dropped the paper onto a table, and quickly hugged me. âYou should be in the infirmary, shouldn't you, Emma? I thought you'd need at least a day's rest after that.'
âI'm okay, just bored,' I said.
Jade looked around the office. It was a complete disaster, with menus, ribbons, flowers and CDs strewn all over the desks. âI'm having the time of my life.'
âCan I help?'
She thought for a moment, then shook her head. âYou don't know the story so far, so I'm afraid you can't really be of any help to me.' She put her hands on my arms. âGo rest. Everything is under control, and the Dark Lord will be home soon.'
I sighed and nodded. We embraced again and I went out.
Â
I was sitting with Simone later that afternoon when Martin and Leo came into the infirmary. They sat down on the other side of her bed.
âHas she woken up yet?' Leo said, touching her hand.
I held her other hand; it was ice-cold. âShe wakes up, talks for a bit, goes to the bathroom, and goes back to sleep. It's like she doesn't want to wake up.'
âShe's waiting for her father,' Martin said. He concentrated for a moment, then snapped back and shook his head. âShe's closed in on herself.'
âWill she be all right?' Leo said.
âMeredith says to let her take her time,' I said. âShe'll probably come around when John is back.'
âHas anybody checked with Judge Pao?' Martin said. âAs Father's Number One I have precedence so I can check on proceedings, but if it's already been done it would be a bad idea.'
âEr Lang says tomorrow.'
Martin nodded understanding.
âDo you get a ceremony to confirm you as Number One?' I said.
Leo put his arm around Martin's back and smiled proudly at him.
Martin shrugged. âI was already in the position, so I don't think it's necessary. It's a return to work after being temporarily stood down.'
âI think we should have one anyway,' I said.
âMe too,' Leo said.
âIt's not really necessary.'
âAfter Gold and Amy's wedding maybe. Speaking of weddings, have you two â¦?'
âWe asked each other,' Martin said with amusement. âWe both said yes at the same time.'
âBut the Jade Emperor won't permit it; we checked,' Leo said. He shrugged. âSo that's that.'
Martin gazed at Leo with pride. âThe Celestial suggested we have a ceremonial handfasting rather than a true marriage.'
âI hope you told him where to go,' I said.
Martin seemed even prouder. âLeo did. He told the Jade Emperor that I'm Number One of the First Heavenly General, and I deserve better than a mock marriage.'
âAnd Martin said I'm the Black Lion and I deserve the real thing,' Leo took Martin's hand. âThe Jade Emperor actually said he'd think about it.'
âJohn'll speak to the Jade Emperor when he comes back. We're on your side, and you're right. You deserve better than that.'
âWe have to go choose rings,' Martin said. âAnd we know better than to have anything to do with sentient stones.'
âHey,' Leo said. âCome and have dinner at our place tonight. Our treat. We'll cook for you.'
âYou cook?' I said.
Martin grinned. âWe've been teaching each other.'
âIt's a date. I can't wait to see what you've done with Persimmon Tree.'
âWe nearly killed each other over the décor,' Leo said. âI wanted traditional Chinese and he wanted modern Western. We arrived at a compromise, and I think it's neat. The rosewood table with the pine chairs works surprisingly well.'
âHe actually suggested Ikea,' Martin said with scorn. âI love modern Western, but there is a limit!'
âGod.' Leo ran his hand over his bald head. âI was just joking, Ming, get over it.'
Martin glowered at him. âNever.'
âNow I really can't wait,' I said.
Â
The next morning I heard voices as I passed John's office and felt a shot of delight â he was back. I walked towards his office, then stopped when I heard what they were talking about.
âShe may be profoundly changed,' John said. âShe may wake up and not be the Emma we know.'
âWe have no choice, we have to do it,' Martin said.
âWe all know that. The choice we have to make is: do we tell her before we do it, or just put her under without her knowing?'
âShe would want the chance to say goodbye,' Leo said.
âIt is kinder if she does not know,' Martin said.
âShe's gone through so much,' John said, his voice full of remorse. âSo many times she's suffered for our love. And we have to ask her to suffer again. I don't think I can do this any more.'
âSo you'll wipe her memory, change her face, and drop her back with her parents?' Leo said. âThat's even worse than not telling her.'
âShe knew what she was getting into: Kwan Yin warned her,' Meredith said. âThe hardest decision is the right one to take in this circumstance. Tell her, and then let her say goodbye.'
âThat means we have to wait until Simone is out of the infirmary. I can't do that to Simone â have her wake up and see Emma changed.'
I went to the doorway and leaned on the frame. They all went quiet.
âWell, there's that decision made for us,' Meredith said.
âHow much have you heard?' John said.
âEnough.'
He sighed and ran his hand over his forehead. âWe've been ordered to do this by the Jade Emperor. He is concerned that you may be an agent of the Demon King.'
âI see. Exactly what have you been ordered to do?'
Meredith turned in her chair to see me. âWe've looked inside you before, Emma, but nobody's really made a thorough inspection, particularly to see if you've been modified by the Demon King. We found that snake thing when the Tiger really dug deep, but there are still depths to you that nobody's seen properly. We have to burrow very deeply into your psyche and see exactly what the King's done to you. We know that Kitty Kwok messed with your head when you were working for her in the kindergarten: she made you oblivious to the strange things happening in the Dark Lord's household all that time ago. Then she broke your memory and dropped you in Lan Kwai Fong. She's had a great deal of opportunity to mess around inside your head, and we need to be sure that she isn't still in there. He,' she corrected herself.
âHe's had plenty of opportunity to modify me,' I said. âI used to work for him, and he was turning me into a demon. I'd be surprised if that's all he's done.'
âHe could have controlled you and made you go down to Angkor,' John said. âIt's really not like you to do something so â'
âStupid,' I finished for him.
âYou took the smallest and weakest of all the Shen at your command and rushed in blindly after six of the biggest Heavenly Generals had been destroyed.'
âYes, stupid,' I said. âYou think the King was influencing me to do that?'
He didn't reply.
âThen we need to look inside me and see if he has control over me.'
âYou could be changed, Emma.'
âMy parents said that I had changed.'
âIf we find something, we will remove it. I don't know how much will be left.'
I tapped my head on the doorframe. âI'd rather you did it right now and be done with it.'
âWe can if you like, but Simone will be very upset if she wakes up and you are changed.'
âAs soon as she's conscious enough for me to tell her, we do it. You said you'd put me under?'
âThe pain this would cause is too much for you to bear conscious,' Meredith said.
âWho would do it? John?'
John nodded once.
I turned to go. âI'll be in the Residence doing katas. Let me know when she wakes up and I'll say goodbye to everybody.'
Â
After half an hour of katas, I gave up and went around the Mountain to say my goodbyes. Everybody knew already; it was an uncomfortable couple of hours.
John, Leo, Martin and I had lunch together in the Residence. At the end of the mostly uneaten meal, John took my hand. âShe's awake and eating. Time to go.'
âGood luck, Emma,' Leo said.
I embraced both him and Martin, and went over to the infirmary with John.
Simone was sitting up, but she'd been crying. I sat on the bed and hugged her.
âIs there any way we can avoid this, Daddy?' she said.
John just shook his head.
âDo you mind if I go out for a while then, while you do it?' she said. âI need to be somewhere else.'
âGo for a walk,' I said. âGo and sit in one of the
pagodas, or check out Leo and Martin's house.' I turned to John. âHow long will this take?'
John brushed his unbound hair out of his face; he'd already lost the hair tie. âIt depends on whether you've been modified, and if so, how much. I really don't know.'
âI'll go and visit Freddo then,' Simone said. âHe's probably worried sick.'
âUh, Simone,' I said, but John was ahead of me. He concentrated on Simone and told her telepathically.
âNo,' Simone said softly, then yelled it. âNo!' She disappeared.
John rose and put one hand out to me. âStone, we need you to assist. Meredith and Edwin are waiting in the other room. Hopefully, we will be finished in an hour or so and there will be no difference to our lives.'
In the second temporary ward, Meredith and Edwin had set up a full intensive-care unit.
âWhat's the crash cart for?' I said as I moved behind the screen and changed into a hospital gown to give Edwin easier access to my vitals. âI know a defibrillator's useless if my heart stops.'
Edwin shrugged. âYou may go into fibrillation. I want to be ready for anything.'
âBut they do it all the time on the television,' John said. âSomeone dies, they shock them alive again.'
âIt doesn't work like that in real life,' I said. âA defibrillator's only useful if your heart is palpitating. If it's stopped, you're dead.'
âFascinating,' John said. He gestured towards the bed. âThe sooner we have this finished, the sooner I can take you into the Residence and give you a thorough lesson in double sword. Your technique is terrible.'
âBlame my husband,' Meredith said. âHe is far too soft on her.'
I climbed onto the bed. Edwin clipped a blood-oxygen monitor to my finger and a couple of ECG wires
to my chest. He checked that the equipment was working correctly, then moved back out of the way.
âStone, next to her feet, but keep contact and watch her. Meredith on that side, me on this side; you put her under first and then we'll look inside,' John said.
âLet me sit at the base of her throat, that's the best place to monitor her,' the stone said.
âDone.'
They moved into position and I felt a rush of panic. Then I looked up into John's eyes and calmed.
I love you
, he said, and Meredith put her hands on either side of my head.
M
y head hurt more than it had ever hurt in my life. Every heartbeat was a throbbing agony.
âEmma,' John said.
I opened my eyes, and quickly closed them again at the lancing pain of the light.
âTurn down the light, it hurts like anything,' I said.
âTry now,' Edwin said.
I peeled open my eyes; the room was much dimmer. âThank you.' I took John's hand. âI know who you are, which is a good start.'
âDo you know where you are?'
âTemporary infirmary on the Mountain. Stone, move off there, it's uncomfortable. You weigh ten times more than you should.'
The stone lifted off my throat and the suffocating sensation disappeared.
âAll signs are normal,' Meredith said. âShe doesn't appear to be damaged.' Her voice broke. âOh God, I was sure that would hurt her, but she seems okay.'
âI am hurt,' I said. âMy head is killing me.' I took a deep breath as I remembered. âDid you find anything?'
They were silent.
âYou did.'
I felt my reactions: I loved John. I loved Simone. Leo
was my best friend, and I was delighted that he didn't want to die. The Demon King, on the other hand â¦
âI don't feel any different,' I said. âWhat did he change?'
âIt was unbelievably subtle,' John said. âIt took us more than four hours to find it. Your Serpent nature, now that we know what it is, is absolutely fascinating and I have collected a vast amount of extremely interesting data on it.'
âBut what did the Demon King do to me?'
âHe's been doing it right from the start, when you were working for him as Kitty Kwok,' Meredith said. âThe changes were so subtle and so elegant.'
âBut what were they?' I said, frustrated.
âHe enhanced your maternal instinct, your natural love of children, so that you are immensely protective of them. I'm surprised you let Simone go out by herself,' John said. âHe raised your courage so you are almost completely unafraid of anything, to the point of reckless self-endangerment. He made you only notice strange happenings if they were brought directly to your attention â well, we knew that, and it was quickly short-circuited by living with me. Same with the conditioning to obey him in his Kitty form: you broke that almost immediately. And he planted a death wish in you.'
âI don't have a death wish,' I said.
âYes, you do, Emma,' Meredith said. âYour conscious mind can argue it down, and you have Simone and Lord Xuan to live for, but if you ever lost them, you'd kill yourself immediately. We shouldn't have worried about you going to the Earthly with your parents â you were incapable of leaving Lord Xuan and Simone.'
âBasically, he implanted in you the instinct to throw yourself thoughtlessly into any dangerous situation where Simone is threatened, and to stay with us no
matter what the circumstances,' John said. âAnd to self-destruct if your purpose of being with us is removed.'
âDid you remove the changes?' I said.
âWe spent a long time arguing about whether those things made you what you are,' John said. âYour courage, your love for Simone, your complete selflessness when it comes to her being in danger.' He clasped his hands. âThe very things I find most appealing about you.'
âThat's beside the point. This is my personality we're talking about, and I should be the real me.' I dropped my voice. âI just hope you'll still love me.'
âWe removed the modifications to your personality,' Meredith said. âDo you feel different?'
âNo,' I said with wonder.
âIt will probably show the first time you're faced with a dangerous situation,' John said. âAlthough I have to admit, a more healthy reflex towards self-preservation will be reassuring.'
âSo how long have we been here?' I said.
âSix hours,' Meredith said. âBut there was something else.'
My heart sank. âWhat?'
âWhen he had you this last time, he inscribed a message onto your mind after he broke it and before he dropped you in Lan Kwai Fong. He was obviously expecting us to do this eventually.'
âWhat does the message say?'
âI'll show you,' the stone said. âIt's your mind; you have a right to see.'
The stone projected a floating two-dimensional image, bright with light, next to the bed. The Demon King stood in the middle of the frame, in his normal mid-twenties human form. He smiled wryly and waved one hand. âHi, guys. About time you had a look inside her. Isn't she fascinating? Look deeper and you'll find a whole lot more
that's been there all along.' He leaned in to the camera and grinned. âYou fell in love with a construct, Ah Wu.' He leaned back. âI'm about to drop her off in Lan Kwai Fong, but you'll find her, I know you will. It's in your oath. I've planted the name of the location in her head â¦'
âBoat at anchor,' I said.
âAnd left clues in Singapore on where I am â¦'
âWe never found any of them,' John said. âWe didn't look hard enough.'
â⦠so she'll lead you to me very soon. If my plan works out, I'll have the Serpent at the very least, and there's a remote chance I'll have all of you.' He punched the table in front of him. âYes. Now know this: I will put you in a cage of jade, Xuan Wu.' He dropped his voice menacingly. âI will find Kwan Yin in her guise of the Little Grandfather and I will lock her up and throw away the key â in Hell, she's mine.'
âI already warned her,' John said.
âI will put you in a cage of jade, and then I will ride out with my army and reclaim â¦' His face filled with fury and he yelled the words. âMy world! Our world! We were here long before these humans, and we will take it back, and control them all.' He calmed. âAnd then we will take an army of the humans that you love so much and we will march on the Heavens. We will destroy everything, and control everything, and we will cage all of you.' He spread his hands and grew larger, turning black as he changed to his male Snake Mother form. âI have already destroyed half your army on the Mountain with my demon copies. Fair warning, Xuan Wu: I am coming for you.'
The image blinked out.
âRest now,' John said. âSix hours being probed like that will leave some severe bruising.'
âI want to rest in the Residence with you,' I said. âYou're back and I want to be with you.'
John looked at Edwin, who nodded.
âI'll carry you,' John said.
âNot by teleport!' I said.
âNo, I'll carry you.' He stood, wrapped the hospital blanket around me and lifted me like a child. âLet's take you home.'
âIs Simone okay?' I said as he carried me out into the crisp autumn night. âOh! It's snowing.'
Soft, fat flakes drifted down around us, and this time they didn't melt when they touched the ground.
âSimone is at home,' John said. âShe cried for a long time about Freddo. She's happy that you haven't changed much. And she said, “Always knew you were an idiot rushing into stuff, Emma.”'
âShe knows me so well.' I cuddled into John. âKnew me so well. I'll be changed. I hope you will still love me.'
âI will always love you,' he said, his voice warm and low. âBedtime.'
âYou just said some of the finest words ever said in the history of the world.'
âYou're not serious,' he said as he carried me up the stairs in the Residence.
âSleep,' I said.
âThat's more like it. I was wondering if we had to go back in and check the sex drive. You have the headache from hell, you shouldn't be wanting anything.'
âNot tonight,' I said.
âPerfectly understandable.' He laid me on the bed. âI need to build the fire. Go to sleep.' He pulled the covers over me and I wriggled down under them.
âHow is it you can do magic but you can't make fire?' I said.
âIf you want a fireplace full of hot water,' he said, âthen I can do that no problem at all.'
I drifted off to the sound of logs being piled in the fireplace, and was only vaguely aware of him joining me and holding me close.
Simone, Leo and Martin joined us for breakfast the next day.
âI'm sorry about Freddo,' I said.
Simone didn't look at me. âBetter than dead, I suppose. Freddo's father is being investigated; it looks like he was a plant too.'
âDo you feel different, Emma?' Leo said. âYou don't sound different.'
I shook my head. âIt will probably show the first time we're in a dangerous situation. I'll experience fear for the first time in a very long time.'
âIt'll be good for you,' Martin said. âFear is a healthy reaction. Overcoming it is courage. Knowing when to run away is intelligence.'
John studied Martin, then nodded once.
âJohn,' I said, âI have nothing to do! You took all my work away. I'm dying of boredom. For God's sake, put something in my in-tray before I go mad.'
âI'll put you back on the teaching roster as well,' he said.
âSo what's the plan for today?'
They all shared a look and the room went very quiet.
âUh-oh. What's up?'
âYou have to face trial by the Jade Emperor.'
âOh shit,' I said softly. âI forgot about that.'
âEmma!' Leo said. He pointed at Simone with his fork. âIn front of the children. Really!'
âYes, I'm damaged for life, I'll turn out a total delinquent now,' Simone said. âAny of that paint left over, Dad? I'll go spray graffiti all over the Celestial Palace.'
âYou may need more colours to do it right, I used most of it,' John said.
âCome and help me knock over an art shop then.'
He shrugged. âOnly if I can do some graffiti too.'
I studied my toast. I knew what they were doing, but it wasn't working. Half the Celestial was after our heads.
Â
John took me to the Celestial Palace himself, riding on a cloud. I wore a simple Mountain uniform; he was in ordinary human form, similarly dressed.
I leaned back into him and he put his arms around me. âAny idea what will happen to us?' I said.
âNone whatsoever. We'll have to take it as it comes.'
âYou won't have to â¦' I took a deep breath, â⦠execute me if that's ordered, will you?'
He was silent.
âOh, John.'
âIt's unlikely your execution will be ordered,' he said. âYou were changed by the Demon King; you were not fully in control of your faculties. You have a legitimate defence.'
âNo, I don't. I did something stupid and your Serpent is imprisoned because of it.' I took another deep breath and wiped my eyes. âI've never been so terrified in my life. Is this the new me?'
He didn't reply.
âI'm not sure I like it.'
âToo bad, I love it,' he said, pulling me tighter.
We landed outside the gates, and he raised one hand to open them. We went inside. Again, the courtyard was deserted.
âEvery single Shen in the Heavens will be up there waiting for us,' I said. I squared my shoulders. âLet's give them a show they won't forget.'
âThere's your natural courage coming through,' John said with satisfaction. âI knew you had it in you.'
We linked hands, said the words and took a step forwards. The Door Gods were waiting for us outside the hall.
âHey, guys, heard what happened; that sucks,' General Qin said. âOrganise yourselves to go get your Serpent out, please. We need the combined Xuan Wu back. The Celestial is way too long on pretty and extremely short on ugly.'
âWe have you,' General Wei said to him.
General Qin nodded. âTrue.' He patted us on the shoulders. âIn you go, guys, and remember that some of us are on your side.'
âWe appreciate it,' John said, and we followed them into the hall.
The hall was fuller than I had ever seen it. The Shen crowded around the gold carpet, watching us with a mix of curiosity and malice.
âLord Xuan Wu and Lady Emma Donahoe,' General Qin said.
âJohn, you didn't take Celestial Form,' I said softly.
âI'm doing this human,' he said.
We walked side by side down the carpet towards the dais. The Jade Emperor was in Celestial Form; the first time I'd seen it. He appeared as a slim, elderly gentleman, three metres tall, glowing with shen energy.
We stopped at the base of the dais and knelt as warriors. âTen thousand times ten thousand years.'
âRise,' the Jade Emperor said.
We stood and faced him side by side.
Er Lang was in Celestial Form as well: three metres tall wearing scaled armour of green and gold. He unrolled a scroll and read from it. âThe Lord Xuan Wu and the Lady Emma Donahoe are accused of recklessly endangering the Celestial by walking into a trap set by the Demon King without adequate military intelligence and support.'
