Epilogue

I
could hear Asher muttering as he read various passages aloud, and while Brax was engrossed in the book, he nonetheless glanced up at us, his eyes momentarily showing the pain of his loss before he returned his attention to saving his mortal soul.  He read along with Asher for a long moment before stopping and turning to us again.

“That doctor or demon, or whatever he was, started the process of opening the portal in the San Francisco area.  My uncle was the only human in charge of keeping it closed.  Now that he’s gone, I think maybe I should take up the role. This portal must be somewhere around San Francisco. That’s probably why my uncle settled in this area.”

“I think that could be a good idea, Braxton,” I said, happy to see him stepping up to his uncle’s role as protector of the portral.  “What’s Asher doing?”

“He’s reading a passage on portals.  If we can find the right passage, maybe we can close it.”

Asher slammed the book closed.  “I found one passage on portals, but I don’t think it’s the right one.  My Latin isn’t all that great. I had a tutor for a while when I was younger; a strange idea my parents had which drove me nuts.  Now I understand a bit more why they were so insistent.  I never thought it would come to such good use.”

I glanced at the intelligent, strong and handsome guys around me.  Our paths were meant to cross with one another’s right from childhood.  I leaned in to huddle with my guys, wanting each of them to know just how much they meant to me.

Brax, the first guy I met here and my tutor.  I never would have made it this far without him.

And Asher; the fun loving guy who seemed so gruff on the exterior, but was so loving and kind on the inside.

And Moore; my forbidden love; my cursed lover who’d put a lustful spell on me.  The guy I couldn’t stop thinking of.

“Lux,” Moore exclaimed suddenly.

The guys backed away, all staring at me.

“What’s with you guys?”

“You’re glowing.”

“Yeah,” Brax added, his eyes wide with disbelief.  “You’re definitely glowing.”

“And…”  Asher pointed to my back. “My God, Lux, you have wings.  This Book of Angels… it calls forth all who have angel blood and asks them to show themselves. When I banished Dr. Sorensen back to hell with that phrase, it called forth the powers of all the angels around us, and that meant you. You’ve been an angel all this time.”

I glanced over my shoulder and saw immense wings spreading out behind me. I felt suddenly faint, though strangely strong at the same time. This isn’t how it was supposed to go. Asher was my angel. I turned to look at Brax and Moore, and knew this revelation had come just at the right time.  I would help Asher fight the darkness that threatened the portals and help Brax and Moore get rid of their curse.

“Divine timing,” I said, gazing intently at all of them. “This couldn’t happen at a better time…”
