She waved and then she was on her way.
Looking after her as she walked into the part of the health club that contained the yoga and pilates studios, I wondered what must be up with her. Something was clearly not right. She was not happy at all about being pregnant, but then why was she keeping the baby? Why get pregnant at all. If it was bothering her to this point, why not just have an abortion? Maybe she was staunchly pro-life.
I thought about how Emma had stiffened and then rushed into one of the toilet stalls when Janine Eastwood had suddenly entered the bathroom. I could clearly picture the terror on Emma’s face right before she’d swiveled around. It seemed like the sight of Janine had prompted her to act like this. Then I thought of how Janine had shaken Ariel so violently on the sundeck. I thought of how the senator had looked at me when I trained her the first time, giving me that small, enigmatic smile and saying,
“I’m sure it’ll turn out someone she rubbed the wrong way killed her. That’s usually the way it goes in life.”
Well, even if it had turned out she wasn’t behind Ariel’s murder, something was definitely up with Janine Eastwood having shaken her like that and making Emma appear like she’d seen a ghost. Maybe I would find out what was troubling Emma if I poked around a bit in my new client’s life.
