Heading down the stairs, I stand tall and confident, ready to face the long evening ahead.  Underneath the foofed hair and perfect makeup is the real me.  The girl who simply wants to go to college, get away from her mom, be on her own.  The woman beneath the façade who longs to be a doctor, help others, and make a difference.

For tonight—and for the next few weeks (until I hear from Columbia) I’ll suck it up and keep playing the game.  I’ve done so well up until now.

At the base of the staircase, Claire-Ann puts her hand over her heart.  “You truly are breathtaking, sweetie.”

And somehow, I feel like I am.
