Chapter 1
Angelique opened the door to see Theo lying down on the bed, just as he had been in her imagination. But Lorenza was sitting on top of him, her dark legs straddling him in bright red lingerie that clashed horribly with her ebony skin. His pale hands held her curvy backside as she swayed slowly on top of him.
At the sound of Angelique’s step into the room, Lorenza whipped around, her eyes filled with fire.
“Get out!” she shouted.
Adrenaline shot through Angelique’s body. “No.”
Lorenza scrambled up and threw a hotel robe on, while Theo got up on one elbow, cool and collected.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Lorenza demanded.
Angelique crossed her arms. “To tell Theo all about
you
.”
Lorenza looked her up and down with contempt. “And what do you think you know about me that he doesn’t already? I’ve been his assistant for two years, you know.”
Theo looked on in interested. The intensity of his hazel eyes made the deepest place in Angelique’s stomach twist with a mix of anxiety and pleasure.
“I did something kinda wrong,” Angelique said. “But I had a hunch and my hunch was right, so I don’t regret it.”
Lorenza tugged her curls back into a tight bun, making her face look harsh and naked. “If you’ve done something illegal, I’m calling the police.”
“I looked at your phone when we were out with the realtor,” Angelique said. “And I read all your messages.” She watched a slight blush shine through nLorenza’s black skin. “Got anything to admit?”
“No,” Lorenza said forcefully. “Nothing at all.”
“Oh yeah?” Angelique said. “How about the fact that you told Iulia you’re gonna try and get Theo to marry you so you can get money out of him? You’ve told Theo that?”
Lorenza turned to Theo. “It’s not true,” she said. “I swear it isn’t.”
Theo raised an eyebrow and laughed a little. His skin looked so soft and creamy against the white cotton bedsheets. Angelique imagined her own dark chocolate tone intertwined with his, enveloped in a rapture so rich that all the money in the world couldn’t replace it.
“You just want his money,” Angelique said. “Admit it.”
“No!” said Lorenza, looking pleadingly at Theo.
Theo’s face softened. “Hey, don’t worry. I believe you.”
“What?” Angelique said. “I read the texts with my own eyes!”
Lorenza stared at her with eyes like ice. “You’re making it all up because you want him for yourself. In fact, you probably just want his money but you’re trying to put it on me to make yourself look innocent.”
“Are you actually hearing this?” Angelique said.
“Yes, that’s right,” said Lorenza, as if she had convinced herself she had cracked the case. She sat down at the dressing table and arranged her hair back into a softer style. “You’re jealous of what Theo and I have and you want to manipulate the situation.”
Theo looked on, almost in amusement, then reached into the bedside table for some papers. Angelique guessed they were part of his memoir—the story of his childhood in one of the poorest slums of Greece and his transformation into one of the country’s most celebrated billionaires.
“
And
,” she said. “You said that when you slept with him he would be thinking about his book the whole time. Iulia then suggested you could sleep with someone else on the side.”
Lorenza shot a murderous look at her through the mirror but kept her voice light and breezy. She even let out a little forced laugh. “Ha! Don’t be ridiculous.”
“It’s true!” Angelique said.
“You’ve got some imagination,” Lorenza retorted. “Some wild, overactive, crazy imagination.”
“You can deny it all you want, but I saw what I saw and nothing can change that.”
Lorenza turned on the dressing table stool to face Angelique, her hair cascading down her robed shoulders and reminding Angelique of dripping blood. She smiled nastily. “Prove it.”
Angelique thrust her hand out. “Give me your phone then.”
Lorenza picked it up off the dressing table and handed it to her. “Go ahead,” she said. “Read it all and find these so-called messages.”
Angelique flicked through her messages but the thread with Iulia was gone.
“You deleted them.” She dropped the phone back in Lorenza’s lap.
“Oww!” Lorenza said, clutching her leg. “Why the hell did you do that, you psycho?”
Angelique hadn’t meant to hurt her but wasn’t about to apologize, regardless.
Lorenza gestured toward Theo. “Look at him,” she said. “He’s involved in work so much more important than this stupid conversation. I know you’re not used to being around people of his stature, people who are actually successful, but he doesn’t have time for all this ghetto drama and your stupid scenes.”
“Ghetto? What is that supposed to mean?”
“Well, you know, coming in here and being all loud and
out there
, pointing your finger and raising your tone and accusing everyone of trying to ruin your life,” Lorenza said. “How about you drop the whole victim mentality and get an actual life of your own. Maybe take some responsibility.”
Angelique had to walk away to calm herself, puffing out a stream of air. Her voice trembled as she spoke. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. You know nothing about me.”
“Good,” said Lorenza. “And I’d like it to stay that way.”
“Are you serious?” said Angelique. “I know you’ve hated me since the moment you laid eyes on me but I’ve at least tried to be polite to you and get to know you.”
Lorenza stood up. “You can stop trying. I never wanted you to try.”
“I didn’t come here for this, anyways.” Angelique turned to Theo, who was staring through the paper, his spirit clearly somewhere else entirely. “What I said about the messages was true. She did say she wants to marry you for your money.”
Lorenza sighed deeply. “Are we still on this?” She crossed her arms. “Well, Theo, who do you believe? Me or this damned liar?”
Theo looked at Angelique. The tenderness in his eyes made her knees give way for a split second before she gained control. Her heart raced and she leaned against the wall to steady herself.
“I believe you, Lorenza,” he said, then turned to Angelique. “Sorry. I’ve known Lorenza for a long time. I know she wouldn’t lie to me.”
Angelique felt like her heart would fall out. Her eyes blurred over with tears and she fled from the room into the hotel corridor, Lorenza’s spiteful laughter ringing in her ears.
As if that wasn’t enough, Lorenza leaned out of the doorway. “Now we’ll get back to doing what we were doing,” she called out loudly. “Without any ridiculous interruptions.”
Angelique fumbled with her keycard at her hotel room door. Her regret was now firm in her mind. She should never have come to Hawaii. As soon as she was inside, she flung open the dresser drawers, clutching her underwear and accessories and flinging them onto the bed. She hauled her case on the bed and unzipped it, strengthening her resolve.
She was going back to the Bahamas, she told herself as she stuffed her clothes in haphazardly. There was no time for folding. Who cared about creases? Her eyes stung as she thought of how tenderly Theo had always looked at her, despite his tough exterior. She had longed to feel the comfort of his embrace, leaning back into his strong chest, being protected by his broad shoulders. She had dreamed of his words caressing all the broken places in her soul that hid underneath.
She jammed her shoes into the spaces between her mess of clothes and tried to close the case, but it was too full. She flung open the lid again, sighing deeply, and began to rearrange. Since she had failed to scope out any sites for the spa hotel she had proposed to Carla and Atreus as part of the Kostas Hotels venture, she guessed she’d stop working for them now. She was too ashamed to explain what had happened, how she had been drawn into some fantasy about a guy that barely even noticed her.
No
, she’d just go and get a job at some tourist attraction in the Bahamas and carry on her masseuse work, resigning herself to an ordinary life. She’d marry a man who drove a bus or worked in an office, have 2.4 children and a house in the suburbs. At the very thought of such a life she slumped down onto the bed and stared at the ceiling.
She wanted a life with purpose.
Ever since her grandmother had died and the church had been packed with people; each of them waxing lyrical about how kind she was; how she’d helped them when they were in trouble; how she had made them feel like they were family when they needed it most, Angelique knew that her life had to mean something.
Life was short, she had come to realize as she stood in the church that day and watched the sea of black-clothed mourners pass by her grandma’s coffin. She knew she had something to offer the world, some kind of inspiration or encouragement or healing. The feeling she got when her clients got up off the massage chair and straightened up, beaming all over their faces, that was what she was chasing—but on a grand scale.
She stood back up and finally managed to zip up her case. Taking a quick glance in the bathroom, she saw she’d left her toiletries out, but there was no space to pack them in. She left them there, deciding to purchase some at the airport.
She passed Theo’s door as she wheeled her case to the elevator and dreaded to imagine what was going on behind it. She had been so convinced he would understand her and her desire to make a difference in the world. He had come from the slums and risen up to wealth beyond imagination. Now he was writing a book to share his story with the world, presumably to offer hope and inspiration for the little kids still stuck in poverty. But now he’d shown his true colors. If he could not see she was trustworthy, then he could not see her at all.
“Please could you order me a taxi to the airport?” she asked the hotel receptionist.
“Sure. When would you like to leave?”
“As soon as possible.”
Angelique sat on one of the sofas in the lobby, wondering how the dream had died so quickly. She scrolled through her smartphone, looking for flights from Lanai City to Nassau. The cheapest was $1500, stopping in Kahului, Honolulu and Chicago before finally landing in the Bahamas. It would take nearly two full days.
