“Love isn’t something you find. Love is something that find you.”

-Loretta Young

TWO YEARS LATER

I sit nuzzled against Gabriel’s chest as the clink of a spoon against glass rings out over the crowd.

“Alright, alright.” Misty says as she stands and holds up her champagne. “Now, I guess it’s my turn to deliver this sappy speech for my best, best friend, Dani.”

I smile at her and entwine my fingers with Gabriel’s.

“As most of you know, Dani is my favorite person in the world. She is my rock. She is my bitch.” She pauses as the crowd laughs. “She is my person. I can’t believe that she found her guy. I would always try and set her up, but noooo. She was set on being a strong, independent woman. A woman that I look up to.”

She smiles at me as she wipes the tears with the back of her wrist.

I mouth to her,
“I love you.”
And she wrinkles her nose at me.

“I love you too.” She says into the mic. “And don’t you forget that Mr. Smith. I’ll kill a bitch for messing with my bitch.”

Gabriel laughs as I rest my head against his chest. “Now without further ado, I made this video for the newlyweds. They’ve been some busy, busy people – and I’m not just talking about fucking like rabbits.”

“Oh my God.” I murmur as I roll my eyes.

The lights dim and the video titled, “Congratulations, Dani and Gabriel SMITH!” begins to play.

I smile as I watch the slideshow highlight all of the places that we’ve been over the past two years, living life to the fullest. Hawaii and Havasu Falls. Germany, China and France.

However, what my new husband doesn’t know is that I provided the last clip of the video, and when the black and white little lima beans shows on the screen with a date, I feel him shudder.

“What?” I hear him breathe out. His arm tightens around me as I tilt my head up and peer into his green eyes.

“You’re going to be a daddy.” I whisper as his eyes fill with tears.

“Really?”

I nod slowly. “Really.”

His mouth slams into mine as he pulls me into his lap. Our guests stand as they applaud our announcement, and I don’t know if my heart can be any fuller.

After everything that life had to dish out, I had a revelation.

That night that I cried endlessly, I fought with my wants and desires. When I realized that there was no logical reason to keep my heart from loving the one for me, that’s when I made up my mind. I had to make a decision between self-loathing and self-loving. And I knew the way to loving myself would also lead me to love another.

So I did just that. I recognized the trials and tribulations that I survived. I recognized my beauty and my strength.

I survived. I survived hell, and I found the love of my life during the most trying time. We both overcame so many obstacles. We both recreated ourselves.

Because after everything, we deserved that.

We deserved each other.

Epilogue

I exhale as I look through the glass at Gabe. He stares down at his lap as he picks at the fabric of his pants.

“Dani and I are having a baby.” I say dryly and his eyes slowly travel up to meet mine.

“Oh?”

I smile smugly. “Yeah. She’s seven months pregnant. It’s a boy.”

His lips curl up. “What will you name this son of yours?”

“I haven’t decided.”

“Well,” He says, resting his elbows against the counter as he presses the phone tighter to his ear. “Name him after you… after me. I am your father after all.”

I laugh. “No, Gabe. You’re not. Not you, not Able. I have no father. And I aspire to be the father that you could never be.”

“You know,” I continue, “It really is a shame that the death penalty was abolished. I would have loved to see you fry. Though, I don’t know what’s better. Seeing you fry or seeing you rot away in prison. I kind of like the idea of you being here, in the wheelchair, completely immobilized. I bet some big guys could make an easy bitch out of you, or have they already?”

“Shut up!” He seethes.

I smile as I lean forward. “I just want to know what it’s like. Sitting where you’re sitting, eating the slop that you’re eating… I’m sure it must be a miserable experience.”

He leans back in his chair as he narrows his eyes at me. “Why are you here?”

I snicker as I shake my head. “Why wouldn’t I be? You have ruined so many lives. You attempted to ruin Dani’s life, my life – but you didn’t. I’m sure that eats you up inside. You thought that she was your daughter, and yet you still brutalized and raped her. I’m your son, and you wanted nothing more than to set me up for failure. But guess what? You didn’t. In fact, you led me into the arms of the woman that changed me. I guess I could at least thank you for that.”
I pause, leaning back. “This will be the last time that you ever see me. After this moment, you’ll contemplate your existence – or lack of one – here, while I’m out there. Living my life. Being successful. Having a family. And you? You’ll be nothing.”

I begin to hang up the phone when he stops me.

“Do me a favor, will you?”

I narrow my eyes at him.

“Tell your mother that she is the only woman that I’ve ever loved. Tell her… tell her that if I could have changed, I would have.”

I shake my head. “See, that’s where you’re wrong. You’ve never loved anyone other than the man sitting in that wheelchair.”

I stand and hang up the phone before exiting.

Once outside, I smile when I see Dani leaning against the car with her arms crossed over her chest as they rest on her belly.

“Hey beautiful.” I say before kissing her on the forehead.

I look in the window of the car and see my mother staring aimlessly ahead as she sits in the backseat.

“Did she say anything?”

Dani shakes her head, “No. Just like usual, she’s checked out.”

I sigh as my eyes find Dani’s again, “Maybe baby shopping will ignite some type of response from her.”

Dani tilts her head to the side. “Maybe. Hey, I thought of a name.”

“Oh yeah?” I respond as she walks around the car and gets in. I slide into the driver’s seat and lay my head on the headrest as I look towards her.

“Gavin.”

I roll my eyes. “Gavin. No Dani. We’re not going to name our kid Gavin just because you like the band.”

She giggles, “Why on earth is this so hard?”

“Milo.”

Our faces drop into frowns as we look back at my mother. Her lips curl up slightly as she looks forward. She isn’t looking at me or Dani, or anything in particular. “The name means merciful in German. I wanted to change your name to Milo, but Able would never allow it.”

I smile slightly before my eyes meet Dani’s. “Milo?”

A smile forms on her face as she nods slightly. “Milo.”

Resting a hand on her stomach, I look into her blue eyes. “Milo it is.”

Dani looks back at my mom and reaches towards her, grabbing her hand. “Let’s go get some things for baby Milo. Sound good, mom?”

Mom nods slightly as the smile remains on her face.

Dani sits straight in her chair as she buckles her seatbelt.

I start the car before grasping her hand and kissing her knuckles. “I love you, Dani.”

“I love you, Gabriel.”
