“Far-rah!” Can
you get your butt down here, please?”
Shaking her
head to snap out of her trance, Farrah moved away from the mirror,
but not before, she peeked at her tiny wings. As always, that left
a sour taste in her mouth.
As she
attempted to float and then resorted to walking down the stairs,
she spotted her mom and dad at the front entrance of their home.
They were putting on their shoes, preparing to go out.
“Are you going
somewhere, guys?”
“Have you
forgotten already, Farrah?” Asked Couraggio Fancycracker as he
finished tying his shoelaces.
“We are off to
the Audura Greenhouses to buy more spices and herbs.”
“You can come
along if you like,” suggested Crystaline, as she straightened her
husband’s tie.
“Ah, thanks
for the offer, but I’ve already got plans.”
“What are you
going to do on your day off, anyway?” asked her father, as he
swooshed away his wife’s hand as she attempted to groom his untidy
hair.
“Oh, well
nothing much. Giuseppi and I are going to hang out for a while.
Maybe go by Principessa Park and join in on a game of
Calcioball.”
Farrah had
loved to play Calcioball ever since her cousin Rossi had taught her
to play when she was three years old. Calcioball is much like
soccer. The main difference being that the nets are much smaller
and shaped like triangles. The Calcioball field is oval-shaped and
immersed in a thick cloud to make it more difficult for the players
to see. The ball is three times larger than a regular soccer ball,
but much lighter. That made it hard to direct the ball when struck
by a player. A Fairy could use any part of their body to hit the
ball. That included their feet, head, back, and wings. When one had
the ball, however, they could only remain on the ground for three
seconds.
In order to
move with the ball, a fairy must float in the air. Farrah found
that to be the most challenging part. Being only able to float for
a couple of seconds, she would often have to get rid of the ball
quickly before she touched down to the ground.
Rossi was an
excellent Calcioball player. Although his smallish Ordinaria wings
hindered him, he was able to compensate for this with his massively
strong legs. This gave him an unnatural ability to jump very high.
This skill allowed him to become the Captain of the Pixie Academy’s
team, a title that he held for the last two years. And although he
wanted desperately to be the first Ordinaria to play for the
Professional Azzurro Campioni team, he had yet to hear back ever
since a scout came to watch him play over a month ago.
“Sounds like
fun,” replied Couraggio.
“Just stay out
of trouble,” added Farrah’s mother as she walked out the front door
behind her husband.
“
If they only knew, they would freak!”
Farrah spoke under her breath.
With that,
Farrah headed back upstairs to plan for the big mission. Today
would be the day that she and Giuseppi would go to the Miracolo
Cave to try to get some Tooth Fairy dust. Surprisingly, Farrah was
very calm. She quickly got dressed in some older clothing that she
often wore when making the messy raspberry and pepper jelly for the
powder puff donuts.
A large stain
was on the front of her shirt that remained even after two sessions
in the wash. Farrah packed only a few things in her purse: a pair
of binoculars, a bottle of water and some rope. She took a moment
to tie her hair back into a ponytail that hung out slightly to the
left.
Giuseppi
waited for Farrah on the porch as she touched down on the lawn. He
ran up to Bella and patted her on her head as he always did.
Feeling a little nervous, Giuseppi walked around Bella, inspecting
every inch of her body.
“Where are all
the supplies?” asked a frantic Giuseppi raising his hands up by his
ears in disbelief.
“What
supplies?” asked a calm sounding Farrah.
“What
supplies? Are you serious? Do you expect us to get past the Securo
Fairies and their watchbeasts using just your scrunchie?”
After taking a
minute to calm down, Giuseppi hopped onto Bella’s back reluctantly.
As he sat behind Farrah, he snapped her scrunchie, which startled
Bella, who kicked out her back legs.
“What are you
doing, cut that out,” responded an annoyed Farrah as she rubbed the
back of her head.
“
Listen,
Giuseppi, I gave you the option yesterday of backing out of this
mission. It was
you
that chose
to come along. So if you are still with me, you will trust me –
Capiche?”
“But, Farrah,
do you know how many fairies have been killed attempting to get
into the Miracolo Cave? Twenty-three.”
Farrah turned
around, and looked at her friend both surprised and impressed.
“Yeah, I
looked it up. But to make things even worse, nobody has even
attempted to get into the Miracolo Cave in over 10 years. It seems
to me that most fairies know that it would be a suicide
mission.”
For the first
time, Farrah felt worried. She knew that Giuseppi’s words were
accurate. Then she remembered how she was able to solve the riddle
and make the Veddo move. It wasn’t so much that she was able to do
these things, but the ease with which she was able to do them.
Farrah touched
Giuseppi’s cheek, which made him blush as usual.
“Giuseppi, you
saw what I did back at the Tooth Fairy Training Facility. It came
so naturally to me. It was as if some supernatural force was
guiding me. All of my instincts and actions were correct. All of my
feelings were correct. This is my destiny - I know it. This mission
is my destiny.”
Giuseppi
grabbed Farrah’s hand and removed it from his face. This was the
first time that he had ever done that, which surprised Farrah.
“Okay, but,
Farrah, what is your plan?”
“I…don’t know
– I guess we’ll find out when we get there,” responded Farrah. Not
wanting to wait for Giuseppi to react, she turned back around and
patted Bella on the side of her face. This was the signal for her
to take off.
Giuseppi had
attempted to get Farrah’s attention the entire flight. He
constantly tapped Farrah on her shoulders. Wanting to ignore him,
she simply responded that she couldn’t hear him because of all the
wind. After a few short minutes, they arrived. Bella landed at the
very top of Mount Michelutz and the two fairies quickly
dismounted.
“FAR-Rah,
listen to me!” shouted Giuseppi as he tried to walk in front of
Farrah. However, she had already moved to the edge of the mountain
to get a glimpse of the cave.
“Before you go
and do something stupid, I think we should think of a plan.”
Already in one
of her infamous trances, Farrah ducked underneath Giuseppi’s legs,
as he was trying to block her way. She crawled even closer to the
edge of the mountain. She arched her neck forward and focused her
eyes on the Miracolo Cave. It was down near the middle of the
mountain, about 30 feet from the top. It was just off to the left
of where Farrah was crouched. From there she could clearly see the
10 Securo Fairies standing guard in front of the cave. They formed
a half moon at the entrance with the head Securo Fairy at the
centre. For a moment, Farrah thought that the head Securo Fairy had
spotted her as she scooted back out of sight.
“Farrah,
please listen to me. We need a plan!” shouted Giuseppi as he
crawled up next to her.
“Okay, okay,
you’re right. Give me a minute.”
“Thank you,”
responded Giuseppi as he took a seat on a large boulder.
Instead of
joining her friend, Farrah sat back down and closed her eyes.
Cross-legged, she began to make noises that sounded like a foreign
language. Giuseppi, who was once again trying to get his friend’s
attention, interrupted her chanting and moaning.
“Will you just
shushhhhh,” Farrah said angrily; spit flying out of her mouth in
every direction.
“I’m trying to
listen to my inner voice for guidance.”
“Oh, boy,
we’re in big trouble,” answered a hopeless Giuseppi as he retired
back to the rock.
Giuseppi
flung tiny stones over the cliff one by one to occupy himself while
Farrah was deep in thought. He was on the 52
nd
stone when Farrah finally spoke.
“I’ve got
it!”
Much to the
annoyance of Giuseppi, Farrah walked over to Bella without even
saying one word to him. She whispered something into the creature’s
ear, and without hesitation, Bella was off. It didn’t take long for
her to reach the clouds above, as Giuseppi looked on curiously.
“What’s the
plan?” asked Giuseppi, just as Bella flew out of view.
Farrah was
setting into one of her trances again, forcing Giuseppi to call out
a second time.
“Geez
fair-ies, Farrah, what is the plan?”
“Oh, sorry,
Giuseppi, I was just thinking about the Securo Fairies. I was
surprised to see that they didn’t have their Securo dust on their
holsters. You would think that if a threat presented itself, they
would want to have it readily accessible. You know, to perform one
of those spells. Like the Parecho spell, which can suspend a
perpetrator in mid-air. No matter how hard a fairy attempts to flap
his or her wings, when under a Parecho spell, they can’t move an
inch.”
Giuseppi
looked on at his friend, he felt even more nervous now that Farrah
had spoken.
“Yeah, you’re
right, Farrah, but I still don’t think we should take them lightly.
23 Fairies killed – remember? Not to mention the watchbeasts. Oh, I
hope it’s not feeding time when we get there.”
Giuseppi
glanced over at the two watchbeasts that were perched on a hill
behind the Securo Fairies. The fussy back dander of the beasts was
shredded and patchy. Most likely the remnants from a previous
attack. One of the beasts was munching on a small animal, the blood
of the bony corpse oozed out of the sides of its mouth.
“Don’t be so
pessimistic, Giuseppi – a little positivity goes a long way.”
Farrah dug
into her purse and pulled out her binoculars. She dropped to the
ground and crawled to the end of the cliff once again. This time,
she was much more cautious when she peered over the edge. She took
a brief glance to see if any of the Securo Fairies were looking in
their direction.
“Uhm, hum,”
grunted Giuseppi forcefully.
“What is it
now?” asked Farrah, as she peered over her shoulder to look at her
friend.
“You still
haven’t told me the plan!”
“Oh, sorry.
Well it is quite simple. We are going to create a diversion.”
“And how are
we going to do that?” Giuseppi asked as he crawled up next to
Farrah on the ground.
Before Farrah
could answer, Bella silently came in for a landing to Giuseppi’s
left. She was holding a sack in her mouth, held tightly between her
teeth. Farrah patted Bella on her head and removed the large sack.
She dug her hands in and pulled out a muffin.
“With these,”
Farrah answered as she held up the muffin for Giuseppi to see.
“Farrah,
you’re beginning to scare me again. Those had better be explosive
muffins or something.”
“No, just a
regular banana and eggplant muffin.”
“Far-rah…”
Giuseppi replied suspiciously.
“I know that
your family makes the best muffins in all of Fairyland, but if you
think that is going to get the Securo fairies to let us into the
Miracolo Cave, surely you’ve lost your marbles.”
Farrah took
the pouch of her Fairy dust out from her pocket, deciding not to
respond to her friend. She put it on the ground and backed away
slowly.
“I’m going to
tell you something, Giuseppi, but you have to promise that you will
not repeat a word – its’ kind of a family secret.”
“Umh, okay,”
said Giuseppi reluctantly.
“I’m serious,
Giuseppi, what I’m going to tell you is a secret only bakers know
about.”
Now feeling a
sense of anticipation, Giuseppi leaned in closer to Farrah. Only a
few inches from Farrah’s face, he tried hard not to focus on her
beautifully plump lips.
“You see, all
bakers have a secret weapon when it comes to the fancy baked goods
that they make. It is a secret spell that is often used when a
baker bakes a new creation. It is a spell that can be used to make
the food taste exquisite.”
“What is the
spell called?” Asked Giuseppi as he leaned back slightly, trying to
contain his temptation to kiss Farrah.
Farrah rubbed
some dust between her fingers and leaned in really close to whisper
into Giuseppi’s ear, causing his heart to race.
“It’s the
Sabona Spell. When used correctly, it makes the baker’s food
irresistible. You can’t get enough.”
“Really?”
asked Giuseppi, as he redirected his eyes downward at the dozens of
muffins that were in the large sack on the ground. His mouth
watered as he took a whiff of the muffins.
“Watch,”
responded Farrah. Instead of blowing the Pixie dust into the sack
as Giuseppi expected, Farrah opted to rub it on her lips, once
again redirecting Giuseppi’s attention to them. Farrah's lips
sparked like red glitter as she blew the dust into the sack. Not
taking his eyes off her shiny lips made Giuseppi feel a little
lightheaded. Fearing that he would faint, he took a seat on the
ground.
Farrah tied
the string of the large sack to conceal the muffins.
“Now to see if
the spell worked.”
Farrah walked
over to Giuseppi and placed the sack under his chin. She slowly
opened the sack exposing the muffins. All it took was one whiff and
then without warning, Giuseppi dug his entire face into the sack.
He began to gulp down the muffins one by one. He would have eaten
the entire stash if Farrah hadn’t pulled the muffins away.
