Barbara perked up.

“Do you think she had some kind of dissociative disorder? Childhood sexual abuse? Post-traumatic stress?”

“I thought you would say men
are
no good.”

“Men
are
no good. Except for Jimmy and you. Do you think she was a multiple?”

“It’s a long way from more than one mood to the three faces of Eve, petunia,” Jimmy said.

“Maybe it was one mood,” I said. “It was all anger, just different ways of expressing it. The poisonous side, the snotty one, the avenger.”

“You may be right!” Barbara said. “Don’t look at me like that. I really am agreeing with you.”

“You don’t have to sound surprised.”

“You can talk about feelings now,” she said. “Is that so terrible? I like the new you.”

So did I. But Barbara doesn’t need any encouragement.

“Let’s change the subject,” I said.

“
Now
can we go home?” Jimmy said.
