“Ladies,” Grandpa Howe says, extending his hand to
the open area where people are already starting to shake around.
“Don’t mind if I do.” Grandma Tess takes his arm. “Girls, maybe you should run up to the DJ booth and see if she’ll play us ‘The Hustle.’ I bet we could get the whole room going.” She winks and fluffs her hair as Grandpa Howe twirls her out into the crowd.
Cassie and I head over to make our request, but we ask for a couple of our own favorites, too. We’ve been sharing our music in the car since we left Maine, and it’s been fun learning new things from her and seeing her enjoy my collection, as well. Pretty much everything we do now is better when we do it together, I think, as we start bouncing around to the music, making crazy faces. And I know even when we get back home, we’ll find ways to keep having fun. Together, we’ll figure out Cassie’s careful truce with Fiona, my mom’s long recovery, and anything else that comes our way. We’ll send texts and write postcards, and whenever we can, beg for visits.
Under the swirling lights, bopping with my cousin and my grandparents, a sparkling buzzy happiness fills my chest. I know that our trip is slowly coming to an end, but the long adventure between Cassie and me is just getting started.
Thank you to my editor and longtime collaborator, Anica Mrose Rissi, for her dedication to both this project and me, and for the miles across which our friendship has stretched. Enormous gratitude also goes to my agent, Meredith Kaffel at DeFiore and Company, for being such a fantastic partner on this path; Katherine Tegen for believing in my abilities as an author; Alex Arnold for so sweetly and expertly taking care of all the details, and the rest of the folks at Katherine Tegen Books for sharing their talents in order to bring
Drive Me Crazy
to life. Thank you to Scott for traveling with me down all roads, to Amy for staying on this journey with me since we were seven, and Meg for being the best cousin on the planet. To booksellers, librarians, and teachers everywhere, thank you for all you do to match the right book to the right person. And, finally, if you are reading this book yourself—thank you the most.
