The
Chaplain and the officer were from Carl’s regiment. There had
been no easy way they could have told me this, they had tried to be
as gentle as possible, Carl is dead, killed by an insurgents attack.
Not that they had used those words, No they had tried to sugar coat
it, placate me with meaningless words.

No,
they had it wrong. Carl was fine, he is coming home in a couple of
weeks. One more tour to compete, and then he was leaving the service.
Starting his own security business. On his last leave, he had
started to make contacts.

“
Mommy,
why are you crying?” Amelia asks as she climbs on to my knee.
My beautiful little girl, who will never see her father again. Toby
his son. Who is growing up in the image of Carl, came to sit next to
me, his arms hugging me.

Although
they knew something was wrong. Toby and Amelia still had to be told,
that their father was not coming home. A father they loved and
missed. In the kitchen, there is a countdown calendar, letting them
know how many sleeps they have left before his return. Amelia is a
daddy’s girl and I was going to break her heart. They are my
babies, I should not have to be telling them what a horrid vile place
this world is. Taking away the people that you love.

Carl
and I were childhood, sweethearts. He had taken me to the school
prom, relieving us both of our virginities after the party. Making a
hash of it, but it had still been beautiful. The condom had split and
we had being scared in case I was pregnant. We had been one of the
lucky ones. It was to be another four years before Toby made his
appearance, a year later Amelia had come along. Everything they
did, they did as a couple.

Not
wanting to cry in front of the children, I close my eyes tight. It
didn't prevent the tears from falling. “how was I going to
bring my children up without a daddy. It was not fair.”

Hugging
myself, I want Carl to hold me in his arms. To wake up beside him, as
he tells me it was a stupid dream. That it wasn't real, but none of
that was going to happen.

“
Mommy
you’re hurting me,” Amelia, cries, tears starting to form
in her eyes.

“
I’m
sorry flower, why don’t you and Toby go and find grandma and
see if there are any biscuits?” bribing them both. With a
squeal of excitement at the unexpected treat, they race out of the
living room, leaving me to my thoughts.

Hearing
a bike approach, I look out of the window and see a biker pull up
into the drive way. Soon, Nick Winchester is striding up to the
door. Scot must have told him what had happened. Scot is Carl’s
older brother. Both Scot and Carl are members of the local MC,
Devils Comfort. Not wanting to see anyone, I ignore the bell as it
rang. Carl’s mother however, has a different opinion, opening
the door, as she let Nick in.
